It’s not f*****g good enough!!!” Jagson roared. His powerful fists smashed down on the table. Maverick watched as Nica placed a protective hand over her belly. Felix moved to her side while the Alpha continued to seeth.
“Goddess, if he continues like this he will scare everyone off this council and you’re work will be done” Maverick bit back a grin at Havoc’s words. “Simmer down pup, let the bastard have his moment.” He answered his wolf.
“Boy, are you even listening to me, you are my Beta, I put you here and I will waste no time removing you if you can’t even pay attention to what’s in front of you!” the King sneered at Maverick. Maverick sighed inwardly. Showtime, he thought to himself.
“Alpha, we must work toward the East first, I understand your concern about the Lake, but no packless wolf is going to risk their life trying to cross it, it has literally been centuries. Maverick calmly retorted. “Our scouts reported seeing a small group 5 miles to the East, setting up a camp. That is where we need to set our teams first” he continued.
Jagson huffed at him. Maverick could see from the white in the King’s knuckles he was fighting his wolf back. He looked around the table at the council before him. Everyone looked weary with the discussion and he himself was eager to give it a rest for the night. He had more pressing matters to attend to.
“Maverick, perhaps we should send Seth and his team to begin patrolling the East end of the pack lands. Keep the scouts out, set traps.” Nica spoke up. Felix nodded his head in agreement.
“That’s not a bad plan. We can have Seth to the East, and send Kya and another handful to the South toward Prix” Maverick determined.
The council members shook their heads. Seth and Kya were mates as well as Lead Warriors. Each lead a team of the packs strongest fighters. They were fiercely loyal to their Alpha, and Maverick knew they would happily accept the assignment.
“Fine, but if this little plot of yours does not work, it will be your head on the next pike” Jagson growled. “I am tired of these lost mutts and their group of abominations they call friends getting in the way of my plans to expand Droake and the Onyx Lake Pack” he snapped.
Maverick let out a sigh. Jagson was the King of Werewolves, Alpha of the Onyx Lake Pack. He was feared across the country, his wolf, Cyclone, unmatched by any other Alpha, let alone wolf, that dared to stand against him. The Onyx Lake Pack house over 1,000 members behind the castle walls, and some 300 more in the surrounding villages. Jagson was hell bent on taking over the entire country. His need for power a mystery to all, and a burden to many.
“Alpha I assure you , we are giving our every effort to expand our forces as far as we can reach to dispel this new group of rebels.” Maverick retorted.
Another member of the council, a she-wolf named Priya nodded in agreement. “The young beta speaks truthfully Sir. Those of us who have been by your side since Darvis disappeared have watched you conquer and achieve every time you set out to expand the pack. This new group is like every other band of misfits, easily extinguished.” She offered. Jagson huffed again. After a moment of contemplating, he finally loosened his grip from the table, his wolf finally at bay.
“Fine, see that it’s done. Have them report back to me within 5 days time. The full moon is less then a fortnight away. We will have new shifts and the Moon Feast we need to be prepared for.” He growled at them.
Maverick nodded his head with the rest of the Council. He watched as Jagson swung up from the table, indicating the meeting was over. There was a cumulative sigh of relief as the tension left the room with the King.
“Well, that was nearly fruitless” Felix said. He was still standing protectively over a very tired looking Nica.
Maverick shrugged his shoulders at him.
“The man is like a walking, talking iron fist, and at the same time a wailing baby, either shoe will fit.” He quipped.
Maverick heard the fifth and final member of the council, Arden snort. Arden and Priya had been members of the pack when Jagson took over. Nearing his 50s he was considered to be an elder of the Pack, as was Priya. The history as to how Jagson became Alpha was blurry, and they were two of only a handful of people who remembered the previous Alpha, Darvis. He had mysteriously disappeared almost 18 years ago and it was cardinal law not to say his name. Anyone who would dare to would be executed by Jagson personally, and many had already suffered the fate. Where Jagson was filled with cruel intention, whispers spoke of Darvis and how he cared for his pack, each member from Omega to Alpha treated as an equal. Arden was one of those who whispered. Maverick turned to him. “What old man, i only speak the truth so many are afraid to say but often think” he said. Arden nodded. “That you are pup, and dumber then a majority at that for it.” He clapped his hand across Maverick’s shoulder. Maverick just smiled. He and the old man had more in common then most.
