Chapter 9

A month later (Mischen is 14) I stared around the woods, a familiar smell somewhere ahead. It was late and I was out hunting as well as trying to familiarize myself with the area. It was new yet it was still woods. Still easy to track by memorizing tree markings. I followed the scent, the heartbeat. It was all too familiar. Pumpkin spice and vanilla. A heartbeat that was delicate and slower than a human. "Mischen?" I ran towards the heartbeat of my beloved only to find she wasn't there. My eyebrows scrunched together in confusion. Then I noticed her heartbeat coming from another direction. I ran, once again noticing that she wasn't there. One thing was there though, blood. Her blood. It wasn’t a lot but what was there was smeared on one of the trees. "Mischen! Where are you," I screamed in worry. I ran to the next trail and stopped breathing. He had her. My beloved was in the arms of the man I was trying to avoid the most in life. Her blonde hair was in her braid she always wore to sleep, there was a cut on her arm but it was too jagged for him to have made. I knew him enough to know his cuts were always perfect. At least, as perfect as anyone could get to a cut. He has had almost 1,000 years of practice after all. "Nice to see you again Salvus! It's been about 100, maybe 200 years hasn't it?" My eyes turned black and he shook his finger at me. "Ah, ah, ah. I wouldn't do anything if I were you Salvus. Wouldn't want to wake her up now would we?" He tilted his head to the side, a smirk coming onto his lips. "We don't have to worry about that though. You see, I've learned some new tricks over the years. One being that mind control our elders were able to do.” He shrugged. “It was hard but I got it down. She shouldn't be waking up for about another hour or two." He sounded more cocky than I remember him being. I moved closer and he stepped back. "Miko," I said, my voice shaky. "Let her go. Hand her over to me and we can talk about this." He shook his head. He moved her so her neck was closer to him. "One more step and I rip out her throat." I eyed him up and down, trying to see if he was lying. He had changed over the years. His brown hair was now shaved at the sides and long enough down the middle that he could have it tied back. His steel grey eyes were no longer caring like when we were friends. In its place was a look of greed. A look that wanted revenge. "You hurt her and I won't ever stop coming after you," I hiss. He takes one of his hands and pushes her hair back, away from her neck. For vampires, the neck is the easiest access point to kill someone. "She's pretty, young too. You perv," he teased. "I never took you for someone who hit on little girls." I tightened my fists, trying not to smash his face in. "I've never touched her, not like you're thinking of right now. I’m not like you.” An amused expression came to his face. I continued, “1898, you killed a 13 year old girl. Drained her dry after having s*x with her. You cried to me the entire next day. You never meant to kill her. The s*x?” I gave him a look of disgust. “I know you didn't regret that. You think it's cute." He rolled his eyes at me. He didn't care anymore. "You can't tell me you've never thought of at least taking her blood." I clenched my fists tighter. Of course I have. It was impossible not to when I let my vampire side loose. "See! You have! My old friend Salvus, you are a sad person sometimes. Not admitting things out loud. . ." "Put her down." he narrowed his eyes and I looked down to Mischen. His hold on her was tightening. He was going to bruise her. "Stop," I tell him with a panicked voice. "You're hurting her." "Please, she's a hybrid. She should be able to handle more than a little rough housing!" His eyebrows shot up and his eyes brightened in realization. "Unless she is still in her human stage. She has yet to shift and her vampire side has yet to come out." "You have it right! Okay? Now stop. She hasn't done anything to you. Don't hurt her." He shrugged, Mischen slumping further in his arms at the action. "You're right. She hasn't done anything to me, but you have. Luckily for you, this has become. . . interesting. She has blood coursing through her veins that's not hers. In fact, it's yours. I can smell it." Of course he could. I wasn't going to let her have anyone's blood but mine for as long as I could help it. "By the way, I've found a flaw in your home security. you see, the lacquer doesn't work if what it's on is shattered." I hadn't even thought of that until now. I was too worried about her being in his arms. "Let her go Miko. Just hand her over to me." "Shut up and I will. I'm not here to hurt her. She only got cut because of a damn tree branch. I've never had hybrid blood before but I am curious." I stiffened as he ran his finger along the cut on her arm and brought it to his mouth. I ran at him, not even thinking when I threw him at the tree behind him. I heard a thump and turned to see Mischen on the ground. I ran to her and picked her up, holding her closer. My eyes turned back to normal. Miko laughed. "I'll definitely be back now. Be prepared Salvus, my old friend. And one last thing. Wake up," he said and disappeared. Mischen stirred in my arms, her eyes showing black. "Get off of me!" She pushed herself away from me. She fell from my hold and backed up a bit. I slowly crawled to where she fell on the ground, looking all around her. "Mischen. calm down. It's me. He's gone now." She blinked, coming back to her senses. "Salvus? How'd we get out here? Why are we out here?" Her beautiful green eyes turned purple. She's confused to what's going on. She blacked out again. "It doesn't matter. Let's get you home." She nodded and dusted herself off. I got up from the ground, extending a hand. She pulled herself closer to me using my arm and stayed like that the entire walk home.
