WHEN we got back to the hotel, I knocked on my parents’ room after changing out of my work clothes. My dad opened the door and let me right in. My mom was sitting on the bed reading a book. Mom: “Hey, honey. What’s up?” Vanessa: “I just wanted to spend some time with you guys. I’m so happy about both of you being here.” Mom: “Oh, honey, so are we. We’ll have so much fun once the seminar’s done. It was brutally boring.” Dad: “Hey, you’re the one who wanted to come. You didn’t have to attend.” I chuckled at my parent’s bantering.
