Chaos Magic

1823 Words
Marissa I stood paralyzed. I had seen this lightning before, long ago. The wolves quickly took protective stances around us as each witch leaned into her magic. Soon the area was filled with the sounds of fighting. Snarls and yelps as wolves fought side by side with witches, all the while lightning was slamming into the ground around us. I stared at the lightning as it arced across the sky and branches off, hitting the ground like cannon balls, sending smoke and dirt flying into the sky. My heart was racing and I struggled to ground myself. I felt something push agains my side and turned my head to see his white wolf pushing against me. He whined at me and I fought to push the memories down. I placed my hand on his head, I closed my eyes, focusing on his presence and grounding, finally placing my walls back up. I reopened them and looked at him. “Can you get me to the edge of the village?” I asked and he licked my hand before lowering himself for me to climb on. Once I was on he dodged through the fighting wolves and hunters as they faced off in the midst of the magic being used. We got to the edge and I noted three other witches nearby. “Barrier!” I screamed and they nodded, stepping closer to the edge and creating a line of us. Faceing the village, we extended our hands out in front of us slowly, sweeping them down to the ground then raising them up over our heads, while chanting the spell. I could feel the energy shifting as a barrier went up, helping to shield the village. We watched as a bolt of lightning slammed into it, the eletricity crackling along it as it dissipated. “You’re Marissa? A woman emerged from the village gates and stood just in front of the barrier. I nodded. “We have everyone gathered and are just awaiting your High Priestess Yvonne’s arrival.” She said, her worry etched in her face. “We will keep them out as long as we can.” I said and she smiled gratefully as she turned and ran back into the gates. I turned to scan the field, wolves and hunters fighting, the sounds of snarls and growls intersected with gunfire and screams. Several witches were either casting spells to stop hunters or attending wounded wolves. As I worked to strengthen the barrier spell Jackson moved through the field, taking out hunters as he went. The sight of his white fur staining with their blood was striking but I had to keep focus. As more lightning straked across the sky, it slammed into the barrier with a forfce that shook the ground. I stayed near it, recasting the spell to repair damage, but the constant flow of magic was beginning to tired me out. A low growl near me caught my attention and I looked over in time to see him tackle a hunter who had been making his way towards me, a machete in his hand. He screamed and then fell silent as the wolf he hadn’t anticipated tore out his throat. I kept moving slowly along the barrier as he trotted over to me, circling me widely and scanning for others. “I can’t keep repairing it much longer.” I gritted as the toll became intense. I shouted to a nearby witch and she came running towards me. “I need your magic.” I said and she nodded, linking hands with me. I felt her magic flowing through me and added more strength to the barrier as another massive bolt of lightning hit it. It held but the electricity crackled along the invisible shield, weakening it and I felt the drain on our combined energies. “What is this?” She asked as worked to repair what we could. “Chaos magic.” “They have witches?” She yelled over the sounds surrounding us. Movement to my left caught my eye and I turned to see a portal opening and frowned in confusion as a woman emerged. I let go of the witch I was working with and turned to face her. Jackson’s wolf halted his prowling and stood near me, watching as well. She moved slowly towards me, her eyes locked onto mine, her face emotionless, as she opened her palms and fire began to dance in her palms. “Jackson!” I shouted and his wolf turned to see what I was seeing. “Jackson move them back!” As wolves began to scramble the witch who had been helping me began shouting to the others to move as well. Some of the wolves got them onto their backs and began to run, while others struggled with their wounds, their witch companions aiding them. The one in front of me raised her hands to the sky, the flames along her fingertips growing as another lightning bolt struck the barrier and some of the branches from it streaked down, connecting to her fire. She swooped down in one motion, slamming her hands into the ground, and sending flames and electricity racing across the grass. Screams of agony erupted as anyone in its path was caught up and began to burn. I saw it racing towards us and reached out for my witch campanions hands, as we quickly created a new barrier between us and the electrical flames that ran towards us. It hit the barrier and split around it, continuing past us as we huddled close to one another, a few other witches and some wolves, including Jackson’s huddled with us. It slammed into the barrier around the village, sending crackes running through it. “f**k!” I screamed as I ran towards it. The others followed and we tried to repair it but the damage was too much. “Jackson take her.” I said pushing my coven sister towards him. He lowered and I helper her climb on. “Get through the crack and get to their village leaders. Tell them the barrier is coming down and they have to get out now. Contat Yvonne. Go!” I shouted and he move quickly, turning back toward me for a moment, then slipping into the crack, running through the village gates. I turned back to the fighting, most of it seeming to have stopped when her fire atttack swept through. Some of the wolves began to make their way back toward the field, but stayed back instinctively. She continued to stare at me from across the burnt field, her eyes never blinking or breaking contact. My eyes shifted upward as another lightning bolt streaked over head, more gaps appearing in the barrier. “What do you want?” I shouted at her. No response. I fought the overwhelming fear and anxiety that hit me knowing this witch was likely part of the reason my coven had been attacked when I was a child. The reason the hunters continued their mission. The reason my mother was dead. A new emotion began to take over. Rage. I stared at her as I centered myself, focusing on my rage. She stayed rooted to her spot but reached her hand out to her side, making a circle in the air, and opening a new portal, a second woman stepping through. This one stared at me, her eyes fixed on me, as lightning danced on her finger tips. They stood side by side as the new witch c****d her head, a wicked grin slowly spreading across her face. They clasped hands, lightning growing from the free hand of the new arrival, while fire grew from the free hand of the first witch. I stepped closer summoning my own abilities, focusing the rage and loss. I opened up my hands and faced my palms towards them shouting an encantation, a gust of wind blowing across the landscape as I rotated my hands, moving them up above my head, out and down to my side, and back to my front. Ice shot from my hands and hit them. They fell back, their attacks faltering with them, as ice pelted them in small round pebbles. They quickly stood back up and we fought back and forth, fire and electricity streaking at me, as I fired back my own ice attacks. We moved towards one another, our fight continuing, as our attacks intensified. I screamed when a stray lightning bolt caught my arm, sending me to my knees. They took advantage of my pain, focusing on the barrier until they finally took it down. I looked at it as the hunters who remained began to run towards the village. “NO!” I shouted as I turned my attacks towards them, hoping to slow them down. I screamed as I felt something sharp in the back of my shoulder, and turned to see the fire witch digging a knife into my shoulder. I twisted away from her and grabbed her wrist, lowering my wall and feeding on her anger. It blended with my rage and I gripped her wrist between my fingers as power surged through me. I whispered an enchantment as I felt the ice moving from my fingertips along her wrist. Her eyes opened in shock as her hand became encased in ice. I finished my spell and let her go as ice began to quickly encase her body. I stepped back, watching the fear in her eyes as she froze in place. “What have you done?!” A voice shrieked from behind me and I turned to find lightning witch moving towards us. I prepared myself for another fight, but she rushed past me. “Reverse it!” She screamed at me as she desperately tried to stop the ice. “ Let my sister go!” I heard a noise behind me and turned once more to see the hunters had begun to set the buildings on fire. I took a step towards it so I could help but a sudden pull of my hair yanked my head back. “Fix her now or else!” She cried in my face as I struggled to break her grip. I grabbed her wrist and began to freeze it up but she ripped herself from my grip, and stepped back. Lightning began to gather along her fingertips as I began drawing up more ice. Suddenly a sharp, blinding pain ripped through my stomach as a loud crack sounded from behind. I dropped to my knees, and turned my head to see a hunter from behind me lowering his gun. I laid on the ground clutching my stomach as the sounds around me began to fade. I turned my head to the side to see a white wolf, covered in blood, tackling the hunter who had shot. Then it all went dark.
