Esme's joyful shout echoed in my mind, and her tail wagged excitedly. "Mate! He is our mate," she exclaimed, her energy infectious. The realization hit me like a lightning bolt, startled and frightened.
Without thinking, I bolted away, my panicked mind leading me deep into the woods. Esme's persistent voice urged me to return to our mate, but I couldn't shake the fear that gripped me.
I had been discussing the possibility of meeting him with Caroline and Sarah only seconds ago. I never expected it to happen so suddenly. My heart raced as I ran, my thoughts a jumbled mess.
Suddenly, a crunch of leaves behind me startled me, and I spun around to face whoever was there. A hand grabbed my wrist, pulling me close before I could move. It was him, his gray eyes locking onto mine once again.
The moment I was held, I felt a sense of wholeness I had never experienced. Whoever had me in their arms became my entire world, and I couldn't imagine going anywhere without this feeling.
His eyes were a striking shade of gray that shone in the moonlight, and I couldn't help but feel like they could pierce right through me. His soft blonde hair reminded me of a daffodil, and his height seemed perfect.
He towered over me, standing tall at over 180 cm while I measured in at 169 cm. His lips looked incredibly soft, and I only wanted to feel them against mine.
As I entertained these thoughts, I felt embarrassment and disbelief. How could I be feeling this way about someone I just met? But before I could collect my thoughts, I heard him speak.
"Why did you run away? Am I so bad you don't want to look at me?" His voice was filled with pain, and it felt like my heart was tearing apart at the sound of it. I knew I was the cause of his agony.
"It's not your fault. I ran because I didn't know what to do. I knew I would find you someday, but I didn't expect it to happen so soon." I tried to explain myself, hoping to ease his pain.
"So, you didn't run away because of me?" he asked, his grip on my hand tightening.
"No, it's not because of you," I replied, hoping to alleviate his suffering.
My heart skipped a beat as he asked, "Then, can we talk now?" I knew I couldn't avoid the conversation any longer, so I reluctantly nodded in agreement.
He introduced himself, "My name is Arthur Knight. What's yours?" I replied softly, "My name is Scarlett Sullivan," feeling a bit nervous and intimidated by him.
As we exchanged pleasantries, he chuckled and said, "So you're the baby sister that Damian couldn't shut up about," causing me to laugh softly. I couldn't deny that Damian talked about me all the time.
Suddenly, his gaze became intense, making me feel uneasy. "What is it?" I asked, trying to mask my nervousness.
"Well, I just never expected that I would find you. I'm about to be 25 soon, so we all thought my fated mate may have passed away already. That's why I didn't find her," he revealed, his words hitting me like a ton of bricks.
I struggled to find the right words to say, "Oh," was all I could manage. The deafening silence lingered between us before I looked up and asked, "Are you disappointed?" hoping to break the tension.
"At what?" he replied, looking puzzled.
I could feel my cheeks flush with embarrassment as I answered, "That's I'm your mate. Like you said, you're about to be 25 soon, and I just turned 18 a few days ago. So I thought you may not like me."
To my surprise, Arthur responded with kindness and understanding, "Of course not. The goddess chose you as my destined one. Why would I be disappointed? You are my other half."
I never expected Arthur to accept me so quickly, especially since he was soon-to-be Alpha. I had anticipated him to be arrogant and dismissive, but he proved me wrong. I admired his character and was grateful that he was my mate.
However, Esme's voice interrupted my thoughts, "See, I told you we had to return. Well, I'm sorry. I was just so surprised that I panicked." I understood where she was coming from, but I still couldn't shake off the feeling of regret for not giving Arthur a chance.
We heard shouting coming from nearby as I was about to speak. It was Nicholas's voice calling out for me, and I immediately remembered the scene of running in front of Damien and Nicholas from the house. I realized they must be confused about what's going on.
Arthur suggested we should tell them what was happening, and I agreed. His amusement at the situation made me feel at ease, and I knew I had made the right decision to choose him as my mate.
My heart raced as I struggled to find the right words to convey what I had experienced. "This is going to be hard to explain," I muttered.
I had just discovered my mate and wanted to share my feelings with my brothers. As I prepared to move, I felt a tug on my hand. Arthur was still holding on, unwilling to let go even after our intense conversation.
"It's okay, you can let go now," I reassured him, trying to ease his tension. He reluctantly released my hand and stepped back. I called out to Nicholas, and soon, he ran towards us, his face etched with worry.
"What happened? Why did you run away like that? Is everything okay?" Nicholas asked his grip tight on my shoulders. I slid his hands away, assuring him that I was fine.
"You know Damien is waiting for you, right? He will need a pretty good explanation for what you did," Nicholas reminded me sternly.
"I know. I'll tell him what happened," I replied, racing about how to explain the situation.
"Tell him that Arthur is our mate," Esme suggested.
"It's not that easy," I retorted, unsure how Damien would react to the news.
As we walked back to the house, the silence was deafening. The only sound was the crunching of leaves beneath our feet. I stole a glance at Arthur, but he was looking away. Nicholas was watching us both closely.
"I have a feeling Nicholas knows what's going on," I confided in Esme.
"Well, it's not hard to connect; you ran as soon as you saw him. It's pretty obvious," Esme pointed out, her words ringing true.
I sighed, knowing that I had a difficult conversation ahead of me. The house loomed in the distance, and I braced for what would come.
