Arthur Pov
My heart races as I realize that I'm running late. I was supposed to be at my destination by 7 o'clock, but now, due to some unexpected paperwork, I will be late.
As I rush out of the house and get into my car, Havoc, my loyal companion, grumpily reminds me that it's not too late to change my plans. Despite his protests, I know that I have a responsibility to fulfill.
I can't help but think about my fated mate, wondering if she's out there somewhere, waiting for me. As I start the car, I try to push the thought out of my head, but Havoc brings it up again.
He reminds me that we would have found her if my mate were still alive. I feel a pang of discomfort, but I know he's right.
As we drive towards our destination, Havoc and I discuss the idea of a chosen mate. I don't like the idea, but I also know we don't have a choice.
We must protect our pack; a strong chosen mate is the best way. My father has chosen Gloria Cheney, the daughter of the alpha of the Moonlight pack, as my mate. I can't say I'm thrilled about it, but I know I must accept it.
Despite the weight of responsibility on my shoulders, thoughts of my fated mate continue to plague me. I wonder what might have been if we had found each other.
Pulling up to Damien's house, I take a deep breath and push those thoughts aside. I have a job, and I can't let myself get distracted.
Amidst this, I had already arrived at Damian's house. I was so confused about the idea of a chosen mate that I wanted Damien's advice. He will soon be my Beta, but more than that, he was like a brother to me.
Damian had found his fated mate when he was 22, but as soon as he did not long after, they got married. They even have a cute daughter now, Zayna. Even Damien's younger brother Nicholas had found his mate. He was 21 then and his mate 18; they also have a son, Liam.
The Sullivan family meant a lot to me. They always helped me out when I was having a wrong time. The two brothers' mates were like sisters to me. Caroline and Sarah helped me out, fulfilling their duties as the beta family.
Father always said that the beta family is supposed to help the alpha family, but to me, it meant more than that. I still remember my father's Beta, Pierce Sullivan. Father always said that he was one of the strongest people he knew.
If it weren't for the Rogue attack when I was nine, Beta Pierce might have still been alive. Father said that he died while trying to protect our people. Even my mother was sad. She was good friends with his wife, Catherine.
Mother always told me to treat the Sullivan family with respect, so I did. I never had to try hard; Damien and Nicholas were terrific mentors. Now, once again, I needed their help, their advice.
I approached the wooden door and rapped my knuckles against it. The sound echoed through the quiet street, and within a few moments, the door creaked open.
Nicholas stood in the doorway, his face lit up with a beaming smile. He was clearly in high spirits, and I soon found out why. He informed me that his younger sister, Scarlet, was coming over.
Scarlet was a stranger to me. She and her mother had left town after Catherine remarried someone in a different pack. They had settled down in the Twilight pack, which was known to be quite reputable.
As I stepped inside, Damian approached me with open arms, pulling me in for a warm hug. "What took you so long?" he asked, his voice muffled against my shoulder.
"I got held up with some paperwork back at home," I replied, glad to be in the company of my old friends.
Nicholas looked at me quizzically. "So, what brings you here? You didn't mention anything on the phone."
I hesitated for a moment before telling them the news. "Father has asked me to take Gloria as my chosen mate," I revealed.
Their jaws dropped in unison, and Nicholas was the first to find his voice. "Are you serious? You never mentioned that Uncle Oscar was looking for a mate for you," he exclaimed, clearly taken aback by the unexpected news.
Uncle Oscar they called my father when we were not on a formal occasion or in front of guests. Father, too, treated them like family. He knew that the two brothers of the Sullivan family were very talented, so he was always proud of them.
"Father believes that my fated mate may have passed away already. He thinks it may be a good idea to choose a mate before my Ascension ceremony". I answered back.
New Alphas commonly had their mate with them in their Ascension ceremony when they took over the pack. After all, a mate makes one stronger; as the alpha, I had to be the strongest.
Since I couldn't find my fated mate, I had to choose a Chosen One soon. The Chosen mate bond is not as strong as the fated mate one, but it is still there.
"Father thinks having a mate at the ceremony will make it easier for the pack to feel safe. After all, an alpha does need a Luna with them.
A Luna, I always thought this title belonged to my fated mate. I never thought it might belong to someone else now.
"What do you think about this, Arthur? Are you okay with having a chosen mate?" Damien asks me while holding my shoulders.
" I don't know. But I know our pack needs a Luna", I answer him with my head down.
"Father wants my Ascension ceremony to be my birthday when I turn 25. By then, he wants me to have a mate at the ceremony. It doesn't have to be official, but as long as I have one, it should make the pack members more relaxed", I say back while trying to make myself believe those words.
"But why Gloria?" Nicholas asked me.
" You know she is pretty arrogant, right? Does your father think that's a good trait for a Luna?" Nicholas asked me while having a disbelief look on his face.
" he thinks Gloria would be a good fit because she has Alpha genes in her blood," I tell him.
" he says since I can't have a fated mate, it's better if my chosen mate is strong," I tell them while trying to convince myself that having Gloria is the best choice.
" I'm sorry, man, I just don't think Gloria is the best choice," Damian says to me while having a serious face.
Standing there, I couldn't help but feel uncertain about my future. I had never liked Gloria. Her arrogance and constant belittling of those who were not Alpha blood always rubbed me the wrong way.
But now, with the possibility of spending the rest of my life with her, I couldn't help but feel unsure.
"It's not up to us," I said. "Father has already contacted the Moonlight pack, and they're eager to have a relationship with our pack."
We fell silent, both knowing that we had no other choice. Damian motioned me to follow him into the living room, and we left the front door behind.
As I entered the living room, the sweet scent of roses washed over me, nearly overpowering. I couldn't understand where it was coming from.
Suddenly, I heard faint footsteps from upstairs, and the scent of roses grew stronger. Then, a girl with striking black hair and piercing blue eyes descended the stairs.
Her eyes were like the ocean, and I got lost in them. It was as if they were pulling me closer and closer.
Suddenly, I heard a voice in my head, clear as day. "Mate." It was Havoc, and I knew my life would change forever.
