After a couple of hours, I park the car in the middle of a deserted road. I turn around facing the sleeping girls. I shake them awake.
" We need to go." The girls get out of the car slowly. They hold each other's hands. I check the car one more time before leaving. I walk into the high grass with the girls following.
" Stay close." I reach my hand out grabbing the oldest hand. I made sure to keep my eyes open while walking through the grass.
" My legs hurt."
" Shush." The oldest turns to the youngest one.
I let go of the oldest hand, flipping my bookbag to the front. I squat in front of them.
" We can't stop now. How about younger on my back." She looks over to her sister for a second then nods her head. I turn around for her to get in my back. I host her up, placing my arms around her legs.
" You okay."
" Yes."
" We should be there in like ten minutes. Can you make it?" The oldest nods her head. After walking through the high grass, we walk a dirt road to an old house.
" Is this the place?"
" Yes." I place the youngest on the ground before walking up the porch. I knock on the door waiting a few minutes. The door opens, Grace's face appears
" Taylor, I thought this time she wouldn't let you out." Grace pulls me into a hug. I chuckle hugging her back.
" Who are these two."
" That's why I am here." She holds the door open for us to go in.
" How about some cookies?"
The girls nod their head following Grace to the kitchen while I go sit in the living room. I plop on the couch closing my eyes. "What happened this time?" I open to see a plate with chocolate chip cookies on the table.
" Imani set me up to kill them kids."
" What!" Grace sits in a chair across from me. I pull out the ruby necklace and hand it to her.
" Taylor are those the McKinnon daughters." I nod my head yes picking up a cookie. She hands the necklace back.
" What's going on?"
" Imani and some werewolf wants control over immortals and werewolves." " What has she got involved in." I shrug my shoulders biting into the cookie.
" I don't know what to do. I'm about to have every assassin and werewolf after me. My powers are still locked and I have two kids with me." Grace grabs my hand.
" Sweetie your the best person for these girls. You might not have your powers but your still a deadly assassin." I nod my head.
" Now for them girls, you are going to have to train them while I see if I can break that spell. Your mother is a devilish for locking up your powers." Grace let my hand go. I look behind me to see the girls standing in the doorway.
" Are you ready for bed?"
" Yes."
" Come follow me." Grace takes the girls upstairs. I huff closing my eyes.
I can't leave the girls with Grace. She's a healer and too old for fighting. There's no one else that I trust not to hand them over. This is going to be a s**t f**k. On the run two with kids. I get up turning all the lights off and checking all the locks before going to bed.
I open my eyes replaying everything that happened yesterday.
Imani.
I get out of bed going to the bathroom in the hall.
" Niome what's going to happen to us?"
" I don't know but we'll be alright."
" I'm scared."
"I am too but dad told us that we are
McKinnon so we have to be brave no matter what."
I push away from the door going to the bathroom turning the shower on. I stand under the water thinking about what she just told her sister.
No matter what she's going to protect her and I will protect them both. I quickly wash up before getting out of the shower. I walk to my room pulling out old clothes. I put on a black shirt and some blue jeans. I go through the rest of my clothes before going to the girls room. I knock on the door.
" Yes." The door opens the oldest stands in the doorway.
" I have some clothes for yall. The bathroom is a door down. There are towels and rags. When you're done come downstairs for breakfast." I hand her the clothes.
" Okay."
I walk downstairs smelling bacon cooking. I walk in the kitchen seeing Grace stirring a pot on the stove.
" Good morning Grace what are cooking?" " Grits, bacon, scrambled eggs and toast." " Need any help?"
" No I'm fine. Are the girls up."
" Yes. I gave them some of my old clothes to wear." She nods her head. I sit at the table waiting for them to come down. After five minutes I hear footsteps.
" Good morning ladies how did you sleep." Good." The little one takes a seat first.
" Sit. Let's eat breakfast before your busy day." Grace places eggs and bacon on everyone's plate. A small bowl of grits by everyone. Scrapping of the plates are the only noise heard at the table.
" We have introduced ourselves.I'm Grace and this is Taylor. What are your names?" " I'm Niome and she's Nayyirah." The oldest says.
" Nice meeting you girls." The table was silent again.
"Before we leave Grace's house, I'll train you."
" Why?" Nayyirah asks with a puzzled look on her face.
" There are bad men after you that want to hurt you. So I'm going to teach you how to use your powers."
" Cool." I chuckle at her.
There's no fun in training.
" Finish eating then training begins." Grace points at them. Nayyirah shoves the food in her mouth.
" Slow down child. We aren't going anywhere." Grace chuckles at her. After breakfast was done, I took the girls to the backyard.
" Let me seek your markings." Niome hands light up green.
" Healer that's good to have in a battle."
" Really people say that I have the weakest power." I place my hand on her shoulder.
" The ability to heal yourself in a fight will keep you alive longer."
She nods her head at me. Nayyirah arms grey emitting fire marks her arms.
" Element power. Good." I look at the both of them.
A healer and a fire element should be good on the run. I need to be able to control their powers and then we can start hand to hand combat.
" Niome you'll be working with Grace, she's a healer too. She's going to be able to train you better than me. Nayyirah you're with me."
