chapter 23

Updated. May’s P.O.V The rest of the day I spent thinking about rogues and how bad they were, but all it made me wonder was what they looked like and were they nasty looking or just like normal people? Were they as smelly as what Susan had said they were? Maybe I should find out, I thought to myself. I’ll go out into the forest tomorrow and take the nature trail. I missed walking, so I’ll do that tomorrow and go by where my house used to be and walk on the trail there. I could even buy a fishing pole, tackle and some bait, then go fishing, after all the truck wouldn’t be at the store until Tuesday, so I could call in and say I’m taking another day off. Why not? I’ve never called out my entire life, so how hard could it be, I thought to myself, just as my phone started ringing. I looked at the screen, but I didn;t know the number, so I decided to not answer it. It might just be another spam call, I thought remembering the last time it happened and they told me I was late on my mortgage p*****t and that if I didn’t pay then they would put me in jail. I laughed and hung up because I didn’t even own a house back then. I looked at my phone again and decided I could do with a good laugh, so I answered it. “Hello, I don’t have your number in my phone, so who is this?” I asked, curious as to what they were trying to scam me with now. “May? Is that you? I haven’t heard your voice in a year, where are you now?” A man's voice said and I knew exactly who it was. It was my parent’s lawyer. He had no idea where I was, but I was curious as to why he was ringing me and asking now, after all this time. Something must have happened. “Well sir, I don’t really want anyone to know where I am. You know that all they will do is come here and try to get money out of me, so what is the reason for your call, Ale?” I asked, getting down to business and he chuckled down the phone. “May, I never could fool you, could I? Well, I’m afraid to say that your aunt Judy, the one you actually got along with, passed away a few days ago and you need to attend the funeral. She has something for you and I’m supposed to place it directly into your hands. The funeral is in a few days and it will be held in the same place that your parents were held at, so please be there.” Ale replied and although I was listening to him I couldn’t help thinking of the last words I said to my aunt Judy. I love you, Aunt Judy and I’ll see you soon. She was the only person who knew where I was, I thought as I sighed. “I’ll be there in a few days.” I said and hung up the phone, not bothering to wait for a reply. I looked at Erick and he gave me a sad look, letting me know that he had heard my conversation due to his wolfy hearing, but I still decided to tell him what was said, hoping that it would seem real or better if I said the words out loud. “That was the family lawyer on the phone and I have to go back. My Aunt Judy has passed away and the lawyer said that he has something for me, something that needs to be directly given to me. I’m going to have to call Walter and let him know.” I said, but Erick shook his head. “No need, I’ve already linked him and he said to take the rest of the week off and he will see you when you get back. Come on, let's pack and get going.” Erick replied, shocking me. “How did you link him so fast? Are you coming with me?” I asked, not used to how fast he worked. “I heard your conversation and knew that you would need to let Walter know so you could have the time off, so while you were finishing up I quickly mind-linked him. I can do that because he’s an Alpha and I’m a future Alpha. Yes of course I am, there is no way I am going to let you be alone with your family, especially after what you told me, also I want to be there for you.” Erick said, making me smile at how sweet and protective he was being. We went upstairs and each packed a small suitcase, not really needing much since we would only be there for a few days. “Right, I need to book plane tickets to get us there because there is no way I am doing that drive again.” I said, but Erick just laughed and shook his head. “No need, I’ve already linked my parents and told them what happened, that we would be going to the airport today and they said we could use the private jet, so we’ll be there in a day.” Erick replied, surprising me yet again. He must have linked them while we were packing or something. It seriously didn’t surprise me one bit that they had a jet with how big this place was, but it didn’t matter to me because I had my own money and would never rely on them to take care of me. We left the pack house and got into Erick’s truck, driving off and making our way to the airport, which I’m glad to say didn’t take too long. “What about your truck? Is it going to stay here or is someone going to take it back for you?” I asked as we got out and grabbed our bags. “It’ll stay here and when we get back I’ll drive it home.” Erick replied, closing the trunk and locking it. We walked to the jet to see that it was being fueled and when we boarded I sat back in my seat, nervous about flying. Although it was my idea it was in the heat of the moment, but I had never flown before and when Erick sat down next to me he must have sensed how nervous I was because he held my hand. “It’s okay, you're going to feel a little jerk and then the plane will be in the sky.” Erick said, but all I could do was nod. I felt excited about being on a plane, but also really scared and nervous. I heard the engines roar to life and then a little bit of movement after that, but it wasn’t so bad. “We are driving down the runway, don’t worry, we’ll be in the air soon enough.” Erick said and just as he said that I felt a huge jerk and then the plane was in the sky. I looked out the window next to me and took a few deep breaths, feeling a little sick. “Are you okay? You’re turning a little green. Here, drink some water and take this pill, it will keep you from feeling sick.” Erick said, reaching into his bag and pulling out a bottle of water and a travel sickness tablet. I took them both from him and swallowed the tablet, hoping it would work fast. I leaned back in the seat, waiting for the tablet to work and thankfully it didn’t take very long before the sick feeling I had went away. I could finally relax now and I actually looked out of the window down at the view below the plane. The tiny houses looked like little ants down below, which made me feel a bit weird, so I decided to sit back and try to take a nap. I wasn’t sure how long it would take us to get to Gainsville, but I knew that it would take as long as what the drive down here did. I slept for a few hours and then we had something to eat, but it was now ten hours since we had boarded the plane and I was yet again looking out the window. I could see the landing strip coming into view and my eyes went wide as we landed, causing the plane to jerk a few times. I felt like I was going to be sick again, but I managed to pull it together. We grabbed our small suitcases from the overhead compartment and got off the plane, but when we did Erick took my hand and led me to a car that was waiting for us. I called the lawyer, Ale, as we got in the car, telling him that we had landed and to meet us at the hotel that Erick had booked while we were on the plane, to which he agreed. The car left the airport, making its way to the hotel and when we got there Ale was already waiting for us at the entrance. We got out of the car and grabbed our bags, as Ale walked over to us. “It's good to see you, May, I just wish it was under better circumstances.” Ale said, hugging me and then I heard a low growl leave Erick’s mouth, making me shoot him a look over Ale’s shoulder. Erick mouthed a sorry and I smiled at him, realising that he was being protective and also not liking another male touching me. “She gave me explicit directions to place this into your hands and she told me to tell you not to open it until you get out of this town again. The funeral is tomorrow and no one knows that you’re coming, so keep it locked up so no one will be able to see it because if they do they’ll be sure to take it and use it before you could even get your hands on it.” Ale said, handing me an envelope. “What is it?” I asked, curiously looking at it. “I don’t even know, she told me not to read it or look inside, so I haven’t.” Ale replied and I nodded, shoving the envelope in my suitcase and then locking it back up. “I won’t tell anyone that you’re here, but they will all come to know tomorrow. So for now at least you can get settled and have peace of mind before the funeral.” Ale said and I nodded. He hugged me once more and this time Erick didn’t growl, then I watched him leave. Ale’s P.O.V I knew that if I called her and told her about her aunt Judy that hse would come straight away, but I hated having to do it after all the s**t that poor girl has been through. I wonder if she knows her boyfriend is a werecat? I know all about the supernatural because I’m mated to a werewolf, but she won’t change me until I ask her to, which I think I will ask her in another five years, but until then I’m just happy being my human self. I shook the thoughts out of my head and focused back on May and that envelope. I wonder what was so special about it and why it had to be kept such a secret, even from me? I promised Judy that I would never read it or look inside and I have kept my word. I hope that she will be alright, especially as tomorrow is going to be a hard enough day for her, I thought to myself as I drove home to my mate. “Hey hun, did you give her the envelope?” My mate, Casey asked as I walked into the kitchen and kissed her cheek. “Yes, I gave it to her and passed on her aunt's instructions about not opening it until she is far away from this place. Lord only knows what the others would do if they found out about it or where May was living now. They have already been asking me questions about her, so the less I know the better.” I replied and Casey nodded. “I agree, they are greedy people that only want what isn’t theirs to begin with and if we can help May have peace then that's what we are going to do.” Casey said and I hummed in agreement as I hugged her. She was completely right about them and it seemed that the only decent people to come out of that family were May, her parents and her aunt Judy.
