May P.O.V
“Are you seriously kidding me? I just drove for twenty two hours straight to get here, so what do you mean the job has already been taken by someone else? You gave me four days to get here and I made it in just under three.” May said, annoyed by what I had told her.
“I’m sorry, May, but we just couldn’t wait any longer. Maybe if the manager job opens back up again then we will give you a call.” I replied, but she just rolled her eyes at me.
“Don’t bother, I’ll look for another job, it just sucks that you filled it right when I got here and didn’t bother to inform me about it.” May said and both myself and Jorge, the other manager, looked at each other. May left the store and I let out a sigh of relief. She was the perfect fit for the job, but she was a human and there was no way we could allow that.
“Well that could have gone better, but then again it could have gone so much worse as well.” I said, looking at Jorge, but he just shook his head.
“We can’t just hire a human, what happens if one of us is called by the Alpha and we have to shift and get there fast. She can’t find out about us, we’ll get in trouble.” Jorge said, mind-linking me.
“Jorge, calm down, we did the right thing. Come on, there are others we can interview for the job, I just hope that we don’t screw this up and hire a dumbass.” I said, mind-linking him back. I ended the link and then went to the waiting room, hoping that we would be able to find someone who had May’s qualifications and experience, but was also one of us.
May’s P.O.V
I was so pissed off that they didn’t have the decency to tell me they had already filled the role, but there was nothing I could do about it. I got back into my car and sighed as I started the engine and drove off. I was hoping to find a hotel or somewhere I could stay for a few nights while I got myself sorted. When I found a small hotel I was overjoyed, especially after how long I had been driving for, so I parked my car and went to the front desk. I rented a room for a few nights and was shown to my room, where I collapsed on the bed. This had to have been the worst day ever. I had driven for twenty two hours straight to get here, just to end up jobless and homeless. The only thing I had was my car which was crammed full of my stuff and this hotel room for a few days. I needed to find another job quickly, but I was too tired to look for one tonight, so I stripped out of my clothes and got into bed, turning off the bedside lamp. I could never sleep that well in strange places, but I knew I had to because how else was I going to look for a job and who the hell would hire me when I looked too tired to do the job? I lay there for a couple hours, trying to force myself to sleep and eventually I was able to, but the morning came way too fast. The sun was shining through the curtains and onto my face, waking me up. I absentmindedly reached out and took my cell phone off the nightstand to look at the time and saw that it was eight in the morning. I had no idea what time the shops opened up here, but I needed to be ready and look the part. I got out of bed and went to the bathroom, taking a quick shower to wake myself up and then drying off and getting dressed. I put my hair up into a ponytail and put a little make-up on, mainly to hide the lack of sleep and then I was done. I walked out of my room and locked the door behind me, then went to my car and got in. I knew that it would look right to pull up to a store and ask for a job with my car crammed full of stuff, but I didn’t have anywhere to put it just yet. I drove away from the hotel and stopped at every store I found, filling out an application form and then moving onto the next store. I finally got to a mini strip mall and did the same with all the stores there. I was about to give up and go back to the hotel, then start up again tomorrow, but then I saw a retail store called Gators. I shrugged my shoulders and decided to give it one last go, so I walked into the store and thankfully there was a help wanted sign on the desk. I looked at the sign and my heart started beating fast at the thought of my search finally being over.
“Excuse me, can I speak to the manager please?” I asked a member of staff at the help desk and they nodded. A few minutes later and then a man walked over to me and held out his hand.
“Hello, my name is Walter, welcome to my store, what can I do for you today?” Walter asked and I smiled brightly at him. This was it, this was my chance to make a good first impression.
“Pleased to meet you, Mr. Walter, my name is May Woods and I’m looking for a job. I came here yesterday thinking I had one, but they gave it to someone else and now I’m back to job hunting. Are you hiring?” I asked, keeping my fingers crossed.
Walter’s P.O.V
I could tell she was a human, but that didn’t bother me one bit, especially if she could do the job. Besides, I don’t have to answer to anyone, the White River pack is a strong pack and I’m the Alpha, so if I want to hire a human then who is going to stop me?
“Well, we have a manager job that has recently opened up, due to the last manager leaving because she didn’t know s**t and almost ran my company into the ground. Do you have any managerial experience?” I asked and her eyes seemed to light up.
“Yes, yes I do.” May replied and I nodded.
“Alright then, young lady, I will give you a trial run. If you can turn my store around in a few weeks then you will be able to keep the job. Come on, let me show you around so you can get a feel for the place.” I said and she nodded. We walked around the store and I showed her everything she needed to know such as where things went when items came into the store.
“Right then, when one truck is behind and another gets here first then we try to do what we call sales, that way we have room for the other truck. It’s pretty easy, but you also have to help unload the truck as well. Here, let me show you the office, it’s a little messy because I was trying to find and fix everything she did.” I said, as we made our way to the office. I opened the door and there were piles of paperwork all over the place, making it look a lot messier.
“Mr. Walter, if you don’t mind me saying, but wouldn’t it be better for us to get to work here first. If you have a computer hidden somewhere under all those papers, then I can go through everything and put it all onto the computer, which will save you having all these files and paperwork.” May said and I nodded.
“Well, she said we couldn’t do that, so you are already doing better than she was.” I said and she smiled.
“Well, Mr. Walter, she was wrong and we can. Let’s get started and I promise you will have less and less paperwork.” May replied, walking further into the office. I followed her in and moved the paperwork out of the way so that she could sit down, but also so that she could see the computer.
May’s P.O.V
This wasn’t an office, it was a shambles. What the hell did his old manager do in here? I thought to myself as I started getting everything sorted. It took us hours to go through everything, putting it into different piles and cleaning the rest up, then I started putting everything on the computer. I showed Walter which file went to what on the computer, even the bank reports and deposits, then when everything was finally done the office was completely cleaned and there was no more paperwork.
“Alright then, Mr. Walter, everything is set and done, so the only paperwork you will be needing now is when the checks are being written and the schedules, other than that your office is now clean and tidy.” I said, but then Walter chuckled and shook his head at me.
“Well Ms. May, this is your office now. You can come in to work at nine tomorrow morning, we have a truck coming and we will need all the people we can get to help unload it.” Walter replied and I smiled brightly.
“Thank you, thank you so much. I will be here tomorrow.” I said, shaking his hand. I left the store and felt really happy that I had just landed a job, even if it was just a trial period so far. I knew I still had a little money in my bank, but I had no idea how much was left after paying for the hotel room and the gas I used to get here, so I took my phone out of my pocket and looked at my online bank account. I thought I was nearly broke, but I still had a little over a thousand left, which was perfect. I had paid for two nights at the hotel and I would use them, but I needed to find a place, even if it was a small place. I wanted to live out in the woods, where it was close to nature and peaceful, so I bought a newspaper and started looking through it. There were loads of places listed, but as I looked I saw that they were all out of my price range and then I found a small place that was only three hundred a month. I looked at the rest of the advert and I saw that it needed work, which I honestly didn’t mind doing. I took out my phone and dialled the number on the advert.
“Hello, I’m interested in the house you have listed, the one that needs work doing to it. Can I come and see it today?” I asked as soon as the phone was answered.
“Yeah sure, I’ll meet you there in about thirty minutes.” The guy replied and then hung up. I drove to the address on the advert and made it there in ten minutes, which gave me time to look around before the guy renting it got there. He really wasn’t kidding when he said it needs work, but it would be alright. I would fix it up. The guy showed up a few minutes later and we went inside, where he showed me around. It looked beautiful on the inside and from what I could tell it was just the outside that needed work.
“If you can fix up everything, then you only have to pay two hundred a month instead of three.” The guy said and I quickly nodded in agreement. I paid two months rent upfront and he handed me the keys and paperwork. I only had a little over six hundred dollars left and still had to buy furniture and other things, so I went back to the hotel and packed up my stuff, then went back to the front desk and got the money back for the second night, as I wouldn’t be staying. I would have to buy all new things, but thankfully there was a couch in the living room, so I would be able to sleep there tonight.
“Okay, first things first, I need to get a bed when I get my first paycheck.” I said, looking around and listing all the other things I would need for my new place. I slowly started cleaning it up and doing little things that I could do straight away, but night came and I had to stop. I took a shower and was thankful that the water was working and hot, then I dried off and pulled out my night clothes and got dressed. I laid on the couch and set the alarm on my phone for seven thirty the next morning, that way it would give me plenty of time to get ready. I didn’t want to be late on my first day at a new job, I thought as I pulled my blanket over me and tried to get to sleep.
