Updated. Rune’s P.O.V After we had picked Erick and May up from the airport I returned to my office and started working, but the whole time I kept thinking about May and what her family had put her through. It was obvious that they had no respect for her, her aunt or anyone else there, but to be that disrespectful at a funeral made me disgusted with all of them, especially that one Erick said was called Robert. What kind of man threatens a young lady, especially one that’s grieving? A pathetic excuse for a man, that’s who. I could feel my temper rising the more I thought about it, so I took a few deep breaths to calm down, but just as I got up to go to dinner my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID and saw that it was officer Curt, so I immediately answered it. “Hello Officer Curt, what can I do for you today?” I asked, curious as to why he was calling. “Hello Rune, I’m sorry to have to call you about this, but I thought it best to let you know right away what was going on. Humans are being killed and I think it's a mutt that’s doing it because I found a human just on the edge of town, but the smell on her body was strange.” Officer Curt replied, shocking me. “Strange? Strange how?” I asked, needing more information. “Putrid, like a mixture of spoiled milk, rotten duck eggs and the spray of a skunk. It was the most vile thing I had ever smelled. Rune, the woman was torn apart, it was brutal and I have never seen anything like it before. Is it okay if I come by with some photos I have taken of the crime scene and victim, maybe you can identify something or even anything, it would be a great help?” Officer Curt asked, making me sigh. I knew where this was leading and I didn’t like it one bit. “Curt, do you think that we are the cause of this, that we are doing any of this? We go by the law, not just our own, but the human law too and that means no supernatural kills a human unless said human is trying to kill us first. We stand by the law, Curt…” I started to say, but Curt quickly interrupted me and I could hear how flustered he was down the phone. “No, no, of course I don’t think that, nothing of the sort. I know that you’re not doing the killings, I honestly think it's a mutt that's doing the killings, but there have already been five humans killed already and I need your help.” Officer Curt quickly replied, cutting me off. I sighed again, feeling guilty for doubting him, but I had to ask him straight out. “Alright Curt, I’ll see you in a few minutes. I’ll let my guards know that you are coming so they will let you inside. I’ll see you soon.” I said and hung up the phone. I got out of my chair and began pacing back and forth as I ran my hands down my face, frustrated with this situation already. Who the hell is killing humans and leaving them so that others will find them? It's dangerous for us because they will think that we are doing the killings and then what, we all end up having a war against the humans, when we aren’t at fault. I linked the guards on the gate, telling them to let Curt through and then began thinking about who could possibly be doing this. It was obvious it was a rogue from the smell he described, but what kind? Was it a cat, bear or wolf that was doing these killings and why were they doing it? “Alpha Rune, Officer Curt’s at the gates. He’s on his way inside.” One of the guards said, mind-linking me after ten minutes. “Alright, thank you.” I replied and ended the link. I waited in my office and after a few minutes Curt was knocking on the door. I opened it and he walked in, giving me a slight smile, but I could see the worry and nervousness on his face. He handed me the photos as we sat down and I began looking through them, but the pictures in front of me made me feel sick. I had never seen anything like this before, these people either had their stomach ripped apart or their throats torn open and then ate out of. This was bad, really, really bad. Who in their right mind would and could do such a thing? “Rune, I know that this isn’t like any other supernatural creature, it's a mutt that I think was just made and told to do this, but the brutality of it is worse than anything I have ever seen before. If we find whoever is doing this then we will have to kill them. I think it's better for you and for whoever you can get to fix this problem because if another human comes up dead then they are going to start blaming the werewolves, werecats and werebears, so we need to figure something out.” Curt said and I nodded in agreement. “I agree, let me get a hold of Walter, maybe he has heard about something like this happening before or maybe he knows someone. Either way we will get to the bottom of this and we will stop this mutt that is doing the killing. Whatever you do, get the humans to start walking with other people and not alone, not at any time of the day. The day time is worse because they can blend in being in their human form, but at night they are in their animal form, so have all the street lights on and make sure that everything is working, if they’re not working then get them fixed straight away and whatever you do for crying out loud do not let anyone walk in the park at night. If there are no lights in the park then it will be extremely dangerous, so keep a lookout and have people walk each other home if they live close by. Make sure to tell everyone to lock their windows and doors.” I said and Curt nodded. “I will do, just give me a call when you talk to Walter. Hopefully he has heard something or someone has seen something. We need to figure this one out, not just for the human’s safety, but for that of supernatural creatures as well.” Curt replied and I nodded in agreement. “Just be careful out there and I’ll give you a call as soon as we hear anything.” I said, getting up from my chair. I shook Curt’s hand, opening the door for him to leave and then I grabbed the photos, putting them in a folder and locking them in my desk, so that no one would see them until I showed them. “I just saw Officer Curt leave, what happened? What’s wrong?” Hope asked, rushing into my office. I could see from the look on her face that she was worried, but I also knew that she could tell by the look on my face that it was serious. “Rune, what’s wrong? What happened?” Hope asked again, making me look down and sigh. “Sit down, there are some things I need to tell you and show you.” I replied and she did as I asked. I unlocked my desk and took the photos out, then handed them to her. Hope gasped as she started looking through them and then I told her everything that Officer Curt had told me about the killings and what we had just discussed. “Why would someone go to a town and kill a human, let alone five humans? That is against both the human and supernatural laws, we never kill a human unless they attack us first and even then we try to just wound them so we can escape. We stand by those rules, so who could be doing this? We need to figure out who is doing this before it gets near us, Rune, when do we start looking?” Hope asked, just as Erick and May walked into the office. “What’s wrong?” Erick asked, looking between his mother and I. From the looks on our faces he knew right away, but should we tell him when May was here? She was still new to all of this and I didn’t want to scare her. Hope looked at me for guidance and I nodded, causing her to sigh and shake her head. “Alright May, you’re a part of this family now and well, you're going to be hearing a lot about wars, rogues and other stuff, so it's only right for us to tell you and prepare you for it. This is going to be your first one and there is a lot to take in, so listen carefully and if you’re scared that is completely understandable. Sometimes we are as well, but right now we need to figure out what to do.” Hope said, looking at May. She nodded, but both her and Erick had confused looks on their faces, which I knew would soon turn to looks of horror.
