CHAPTER 4“MINING ENGINEERS”
It was a small place, sparsely furnished, and though not on the beach, within easy walking distance of it. After all, we were not planning on staying long. Bao tended to be more curious than we had expected, so we found it necessary to fasten a leather belt around his waist and attach a line with an eye splice and metal clamp at one end. Bao had learned how to untie every knot I could think of. Sam also wanted to find a couple of pairs of shorts and T-shirts for him to give him some “respectability” when in public. The clothes, hopefully, would also confirm to everyone that he was not bush meat.
“You know,” Sam said, “he may have been someone’s pet up there after all. He’s very friendly with us, and he is actually trained to do his business outdoors.”
