05: After

After. Blowing her hair back and dry, she clasped her hands together after keeping the hot dryer away. She did tried her best to get rid of any hair that might be found around the room before getting rid of dryer in to it box. “Maria.” Janice screamed, getting of the maid that was standing nearby. The door was opened ajar and the maid named Maria rushed in with her hands folded in her back. “You called for me Miss.” Maria uttered with her hand hung low. “Yes, inform the kitchen to wait for me so that we will prepare dinner for mother and father, they are on their way.” Janice ordered. The maid nodded her head before rushing out of the room. Then Janice packed her hair into a ponytail, pushing it into the cap. When she was done in the room, she pressed her lips into a thin line before turning off the light and headed straight to the kitchen where she met the kitchen maids waiting for her. They all greeted her with a smile plastered on their faces before she began to order them around the kitchen. “What are we making miss?” The head of the kitchen asked. She would have been the one assisting the chef in cooking on a normal day but since Janice ordered to cook herself and they all love her cooking, there was nothing more for them to do in order to stop her. “Maybe chicken and cheese salad for father. And then spaghetti and walnut sauce for mother.” She told them. Hearing so, the head of kitchen waved her hands at the chef, and they walked away, getting the stuff she will need. “Oh I will make some cheese fondue.” She added, getting the cheese from the refrigerator herself. Everything was set on the table for her and she set to work, with the help of the maids. It took her less than thirty minutes to finish off in the kitchen and that was because she had people around helping her. The kitchen became filled with the aroma of the dishes that were gently moved to the dining table. A satisfactory smile was displayed on her face as she followed them to the table, seeing how everything was organized. “Yes, leave that there and bring more plates. We don’t know if they are coming alone or with others.” She informed. When everything was settled there, she moved to the living room that was just a few walk to the hallway. She pressed on the television, bringing it to life and playing an episode that she had missed while she was at work. If not because her parents are on their home, then she would have gotten a hit bowl of popcorn and Chapman to watch the movie with. Half way through the episode, she faintly heard the main door to the house opened and then, her father’s assistant made his appearance into the living room. “Miss Janice, it is my pleasure to see you again.” He greeted, taking a seat as she had offered him. “Same here.” She responded. Their conversation died right there and it began very awkward for her, seeing that she can’t even entertain him. She bit her lips before gathering all the courage she needed. “Do you mind me asking why you are here this late hour?” She asked politely, a smile never left her lips. “Oh yes, your parents had asked me to wait for them here as we have something important to discuss over dinner.” He explained. Well, that does explain why he is here again. She only gave him a nod, before passing the television control and left him alone in the living room. Her father’s assistant is someone she doesn’t really want to get involved with for no reason. For Janice, there is definitely a bad aura around him that she can’t point at, just like how she felt when she met Javier. She went straight to her room, for there she will wait for her parents while stuffing through the internet. And she took her phone, a message from her mother came in. They were almost at home, just caught up in the traffic that lead to their estate. She squealed, happily waiting for them to arrive and according to her calculations, they will be there in less than five minutes. She sat on the bed, waiting patiently for their arrival but she didn’t hear the car driving in. She dialed her mother’s number but it seemed like she was on another call. Heaving a sigh, she pressed her head against the wall closing her eyes and without track of the time, sleep took over her. — One that Janice didn’t understand was how she had peacefully slept throughout the night, without for once opening her eyes to check if her parents are at home now. And she woke up, she wore her slippers running towards their rooms to find it empty but then, she heard their faint voice coming from the kitchen. She ambled down the stairs, praying while she stepped a foot into the kitchen. Behold, her parents stood there on their robes while taking a mug to their lips, it was as if they had just brewed some coffee. “Father, mother.” She called out before hugging them together. She felt her mother nuzzling her nose into the croak of her neck. “My princess.” Her mother called out as she hugged her more. “I have missed you all.” She told them, finally letting them go. Her father took a sip from his cup before he gave her a pat on the head. “Are you sure you missed me or only your mother? Because I am sure you didn’t miss me.” He joked, his face straight that could deceive her into thinking he is serious about what he had said. “Of course not father. I missed the both of you equally.” She replied. Nacole Carter laughed, looking at how naive and innocent Janice had looked. “I was only joking out princess. I also missed you a lot. Now, before I forget, I think you should be in charge of the kitchen.” He told her. “I mean the dishes you prepared yesterday took me over the edge. You are blessed.” He commented. “Of course, her mother was once a renowned chef and again, my angel is taking my footsteps. I am a proud mother indeed.” Her mother uttered, wiping the invisible tears that she claimed was falling out of her eyes. She chuckled. “Yes mother and I am happy to have made you proud.” After saying that, Janice got an opportunity to also brew herself a coffee before they all moved to the dining table. “Father, your assistant came over here. Did you get to see him?” She asked, recalling that she had left someone in the living room last night. “Not really. Why was he here?” Both Janice and her mother shared a look before Janice remembered something. “He told me that you had asked him to wait for you here because there are things to you need to discuss over dinner and also, I began to feel sleepy when he was here so I left him all alone.” She explained. “Janice, you shouldn’t have left him all alone here. Mister Smith is not working for your father anymore. They have parted ways before we travelled and I forgot to tell you.” Her mother told her. Instantly, she realized the mistake she had made. She should have never trusted mister Smith alone here. What has he possibly done before the arrival of her parents. No, that shouldn’t be the question right now. What gave him the idea to come and tell her those lies and also what was his plans? Something is fishy about mister smith and the reason why her father had parted ways with him. And the only way for her to find out is by asking. “But father, he was among your best employees. Why did you let him go?” She questioned. Nacole Carter dropped the empty cup in his hand and turned his attention to his daughter. “Look Janice. There are times that we find out that those we hold dear to us are hiding something from us. Not even that, they are plotting something against us, because the envy is much in a way they can’t hide it.” He uttered. To Janice, it was as if he was talking in proverbs because she didn’t really get the main point. Did Mister Smith deceive him? “Just cut the chase and tell her that he stole from the company.” Her mother chirped in. Her mouth formed an o shape because she remembered something. The jewelry that she had won at the auction for her was indeed left in the living room. She stood up, running straight to the stand where she had kept it and couldn’t find it. The lock was even broken that no one could notice if the drawer was not touched. She screamed and her parents followed her to see what was wrong. “What is it Janice?” Her father asked concerned. She pointed at the drawer with nothing in it but he had no idea what she meant. “The jewelry that I had gotten from the auction is gone. It has been stolen.” She cried falling onto the chair. What could have possibly brought Mister Smith to the house when her parents are not around? Now she does have a reason to suspect and hate him. “What do you mean by it has been stolen?” Both her parents asked at the same time. “Yes it has been stolen. I had kept it here, in the drawer with the intention of giving it to you the moment you return but Mister Smith came in and i left to sleep. I don’t know how it has disappeared.” She said in between her cries. Now, she’d fight Mister Smith with a strong reason until the jewelry is found.
