04: Before

Before. Janice couldn’t close her eyes that night, she waited to hear the footsteps of her father walking into the house but she didn’t. Maybe she is still naive as her mother had said but yet, she couldn’t force herself to believe it. Her mother isn’t pregnant right? When her father is always away, then how can she be? A question that kept on roaming about on her mind, and she knew the only person that has an answer to it is her father, so she’d rather deprive herself of sleep and wait until he returns, she wouldn’t mind doing that. Just so she could avoid issues that will later resurface. Janice turned to the other side of the bed, making the bed dipped as she shifted. The lamp shone brightly, though the brightness couldn’t be seen from a far angle. She could hear rustles in the bush and she heaved a sigh. It must be her father as her mother had said earlier. She waited for the door to be opened, only for her to hear the cries of the poor chicken that must have been chased by a snake, perhaps. She hissed, groaning and hitting the pillow. “When will this old man come?” She asked no one in particular. Tears were threatening to fall from her eyes for no reason but she held it back. She is Janice and no one can make her cry, not even this. It was already past midnight and it seemed like her father wasn’t going to come home that night so she opted for going to sleep. At least, in the morning, she will use the energy in her to go and see her father in town. This is a plan she must execute without the knowledge of her mother or else, she will be stopped before she leaves the house. She whispered a silent prayers, before she slowly closed her eyes, trying to let the darkness engulf her but to no avail. She’d squirm her eyes, causing pain in them, going under the blanket to cover her eyes so that the light won’t get into them but no, she didn’t fall asleep. And that was how she stayed up all night, guarding the house as she had put it to cover up for the reason why she didn’t go to fetch morning for them. “Just do and come back early. We will be expecting some guests today.” Her mother informed, passing her some money. “What?” Her mother asked, seeing the look was becoming more intense and Janice didn’t even attempt to take the money away from her hand. “I thought you said we don’t have much money in this house?” She quoted, remembering the night her mother clearly told her that they are at the edge of selling some of their important and most expensive stuffs. “Yes Janice, we didn’t then but now we do. And for your information, your father dropped it. It was his pay that he gave up for you.” Mother explained. Janice looked at the money that her mother had given her then back at her mother. “Leave now or you will late.” She left, with thousands of questions clouded in her mind. The first one is who are the quests that they will be having later? Are they someone she knows of? Or what? Either way, she will find out and soon, she will be getting an explanation of everything happening. The downtown market place wasn’t as full as she had imagined it would be, after all, it was just seven in the morning. Most of the people staying downtown should be at the waterfall or still asleep. She made sure to get everything that her mother requested her to before heading back home. She stopped in track, hearing that particular voice that she hates. “I will surely show her a lesson.” Evans had said. “Then what will you do?” A voice that she is sure belongs to Evans friend asked. Seeing that she is getting late, she would have just head home but then, she is interested in knowing what Evans will do to her as a revenge. “I will r**e her, molest her in a way that no one will look at her and what next? She will come back to me.” He revealed with an evil laugh. His friend joined him then later stopped. “But you know Janice, she is not as stupid as people thinks she is. She won’t let you get to her that way.” His friend opposed. “I know that is why I have gotten this.” She heard Evans said and for sure, he must have shown his friend what he had gotten. A hiss left her lips as she was tired of attempting to see what Evans had shown his friend so she left with the intention of finding out what that was. She reached home, keeping everything that she had gotten from market on the kitchen aisle as her mother emerged from the front door. “Make something with the vegetables and meat you had gotten while I set the table.” Her mother instructed, her hands pointing at the nylon in Janice’s hand. “And oh, you don’t have to worry about the rice, it is done. Just make something, a soup maybe.” She added before leaving Janice to work it out. The first thing Janice did was rinse the meat, dicing it and keeping it marinated before she rinsed the vegetables. After everything was set, she began to chop the vegetables in a favorable size that won’t be too big or too small then set a big soup on the stove. Making vegetable soup is among one of the best soup she is good at and she loves. The heavenly aroma that comes from it surely drives her to the edge. And it didn’t take her up to five minutes when she finished frying the meat in a little amount of oil and then, she poured in the steamed vegetables with creamy milk that she had gotten without the knowledge of her r mother. She will later do the explanation of why she used creamy milk. After she was done, she dished out everything in the big bowl. Janice moved it to the little dining table, wiping away the sweat on her face. “Pheww, I need a break.” She muttered, turning to head to her room. “Janice.” She stopped in track when she heard her mother calling her back. “Get ready because your father will be here with the guests and you have to be in your best behavior.” Her mother warned. Janice only nodded before heading to her room to do as her mother asked. She bathed first, using the sandalwood soap she was able to buy with the money she silently hidden. Then she got dressed in a black dress that flown down her body with laced adorned at the very end. She looked at the half broken mirror in the room, admiring herself and wondering why a man like Evans want someone as hot as her. It is very much impossible. She stopped twirling in front of the mirror when she heard noises outside the house and then the door was opened. She could hear the laughter of her father, his voice shaking nervously talking with other people. She took in a deep breath, knowing that her mother will soon come in to call her. “This is it. I hope it ends well though.” She whispered. Just as she had thought, the door to her room was slightly opened and her father entered. His face was stern, though she never expected a smile on his face to begin to. “Janice.” He slowly called out. “I am not here to advice you or give you a choice, rather to tell you of my decision. Due to my crimes that I can’t pay off, no matter how many years I spend paying for them, I have decided to offer you to the Leader.” He revealed, sitting at the bed edge. “What do you mean the leader?” “The Mafia lord of the town, Javier.” As soon as the name slipped out of his tongue, she felt a pang in her chest that almost sent her to the other world. What in heaven is father trying to tell her? Because she can’t just believe it. “No right! You must be joking.” She exclaimed moving back. “I am not joking Janice and as I had said, I wasn’t going to look for your opinion or choice so get your things ready, for you will be going to the town with the leader.” He ended before leaving the room. She slumped down on the floor, with tear oozing out of her eyes when she had sworn to herself that she wasn’t going to let anything done by her parents. No matter how hard she tried to stop it, it wouldn’t and then her hands were not even moving to clear her face. “Why me?” She cried out loudly. She kept on asking no one in particular that questions, then she began to hit her head on the wall. The pain is something she couldn’t put in words, yet she kept on hitting it until there was no more energy left in her. Knowing that doing all those stuffs won’t be a help to her, she wiped away her tears and washed her face. Janice brought out a mini luggage and began to put in the most important things she will need. The least Javier could do is molest her as she heard what he does from others. Then maybe sell her off as an auction or even kill her but she isn’t scared. She will face whatever comes her way. She was built to defend herself.
