Flashback.
A Twenty Years Janice.
It was just noon and she was planning on going to the waterfall to get some fresh water for her mother and then, get some fresh vegetables from the farm. Even though it is a crime to pluck the vegetables as it belongs to the Holdings, Janice doesn’t really care.
It was there only means of survival and she has been doing it for years. One thing is she is not sure if it was already noticed by the gardener but she always does it. She put her hair back into a ponytail using the one and only scrunchie she owns before picking the water bowl. “Mother, I will be leaving.” She screamed, moving out of the house and she didn’t even get a response from her mother.
She was okay with it because her mother had just found out the means she takes to get the vegetables. Her mother was against it, she knew the consequences of what awaits then when the Holdings find out. But as usual, Janice didn’t pay heed to her, no one can stop her.
Besides, they were the ones that cleared the field, so she is not committing a crime. Only one route takes her to the waterfall, and that was through the farm house, since it is already noon, most of the guards have retired for the night.
“Janice.” A voice called out and she stopped in track.
She was almost at the waterfall, and she is sure that it is only one person that can stop her. He is the only one that loves getting involved with her. “Evans” she gritted turning to face him.
Evans face held a smirk that made her wished she could wipe it out and kill him, but she will just add more to her crime. Killing one another is a crime and the punishment is stoning to death. That doesn’t seem explainable to Janice, the government and the Holding doesn’t go a week without killing more than ten lives and there used to be no investigation concerning it. “You know, you are meant to be happy for seeing your future husband.” He said, sliding an arm over her waist.
His action had already got her fuming with anger. “Take your hands off me Evans.” She gritted for the first time but all he continued to do was smirk directing at her face.
When she asked him for the second time and he didn’t, she said a silent prayer before using all her force to kick him where the sun doesn’t shine brightly. He crushed down to the ground, in pains and Janice left him that way, despite hearing the entire curse he was raining on her and his vows.
She doesn’t care anymore. And when she finally reached the waterfall, there were a few people by the river side playing in it. She chuckled knowing their happiness doesn’t last long, because in less than fifteen minutes, they will all rush out f the river, fighting for their way home.
The town is never safe in the night and that is what they get for staying at the shady side of the town. Then, when she was still a child, she would try to talk it out to her father, giving him a thousand reasons why they should leave the town but he will only tell her that he is forever indebted to the Holdings and he has to stay close to them.
And since then, Janice has sworn to find out what that secret is, even though it seems hard to do but she will fight her way for it. She stayed under the waterfall as she always do, fetching the right amount of water she can take before she waved her hand at the little girl that was swimming by the side of the river. “Make sure you leave in five, okay?” she said coyly before leaving.
The rest can actually stay in the river for all they want because she doesn’t care, she never cares about anyone, not even her parents because they don’t deserve it. She walked faster than normal to the farm, making sure that no one was looking at her. She kept her water bowl by the side, before she used her strategy to climb over the electric fence.
She dropped firmly on the ground, look around the farm, making sure that no one was there and she headed straight to the cabbage section. She plucked a few cabbages, some carrots and some fresh potato.
She tied everything to her waist before jumping over the sigh again and was happy that no security guard was looking at her. “Another mission is completed.” She uttered putting up her water bowl and began to head home.
Along her way home, she sang the song that her late elder sister would sing to her when they are returning from the waterfall. The death of her elder sister took her by surprise and she knew it was not any normal death. Everything was covered up, her parents don’t even want her to go and request for the investigation report which confirmed her thoughts.
There is a lot that she wants to dig about the Holdings but with time, she will do it and be able to win against them, a vow that she had taken upon her life. She stopped in track when she saw Evans and his men standing just outside their compound, obviously waiting for her and Evans seemed to still be in pain because he was holding his crotch part.
Feeling satisfied with what she did to him, she diverted to the back door that leads to their home, fully knowing that Evans and his friend have no idea of that door. She slowly opened it, gaining the attention of her mother who was just washing some stored meat with the rest of the water that was remaining.
“What did you do to Evans this time around?” her mother asked. That was the first sentence that came out of her mouth ever since their mini fight about the goods Janice steals from the farm.
“Everything he deserved.” Came her curt reply.
---
The heavily fresh aroma of baked potato wrapped with seasoned cabbage filled the entire house, making Janice moan by just sniffing and bringing it out of the old oven they owned. “Food is ready mother.” She shouted across the room getting the attention of her mother who was knitting.
At that time, Evans was tired of waiting and knocking endlessly so he left, with the vows that he will revenge what Janice did to him. She only scoffed when she heard him before getting back to what she was doing. As always, Janice took her time to perfectly arrange the food on the table before the arrival of her mother.
This is the fourth month that she had not set her eyes on her father and she never bothered to ask where he was or why he isn’t home every night. She is sure he is up there, staying at the Holdings mansion doing their dirty works as usual. The Holdings dogs will her father always remain. Her mother dropped everything and came to sit on the table with her face up.
To Janice, it seems like she was avoiding something and she couldn’t pin point it. She kept on looking at her mother, especially when she served her and saw how her fast her mother ran out of the living room, vomiting all the content in her stomach.
A loud gasp escaped Janice lips because she couldn’t believe what she just saw. Her mother can never be pregnant right? Her father is not around to do the deed then who would have done it? That is why she doesn’t even want to believe what she was seeing.
She patiently sat at the table, waiting for her mother to return and when she did, Janice continued to look at her. “What do you want to say or ask Janice?” Her mother questioned seeing the intense look she was giving her.
Janice swallowed hard, serving a small amount of the food to her mother then to herself. “You are not pregnant right? You only ate something that made you act that way.” She muttered, trying to convince herself with the lies.
“No, Janice, I am pregnant.” Her mother answered, taking her off the edge.
“But it can never be. Do you know the crime you have committed?” Janice asked at the peak of her voice. “I get it that father is not a good and he doesn’t deserve us as family, but why do you have to betray him? Why mother?” She cried out.
Her mother shook her head, turning her attention to the food. “It seems to me that you are still covered in the dark even though you do act wise. You doesn’t even notice how you environment is at night neither do you see. Your father is responsible for this.” Her mother explained.
“But since you don’t read the place and understand I will tell you this, you are in this alone; the time will come that you will understand this well.” She ended, wiping the side of her mouth and leaving Janice, all alone, trying to figure out what was really going on around her.
