Olima found a taxi, entered the back seat, and told the driver her destination: "To the Emerson estate."
"Okay," replied the taxi driver. He started the car engine and drove ahead to the estate.
Olima was the only passenger, and they soon arrived at the Emerson Housing Estate gate. The taxi stopped, and Olima paid for her ride before alighting and rushing through the estate gate, running home quickly.
The estate security men watched Olima and wondered what was chasing her this time, as they knew her well.
One of the security men said, "She's a gorgeous young lady, always running errands since her parents passed away."
The others remained silent and continued with their duties, as there were four security men there.
Finally, Olima arrived at her late father's mansion gate and banged heavily on it, calling out to Nathan.
"Nathan, open the gate!"
Nathaniel quickly approached the gate from within, opened the small gate, and asked her, "Why are you banging on the gate like that?"
"I'm sorry, sir. Please open the gate quickly." Olima smiled faintly at Nathan and apologized. She rushed into the compound and made her way toward the mansion's front after Nathan opened the small gate for her.
Olima was nervous and knocked on the mansion's front door. Opening the door, she walked into the living room and saw Mia still engrossed, watching television, and sitting on the couch.
Mia looked at Olima and saw her entered the living room.
Olima's big brown eyes quickly traveled to the wall clock, and she gasped when she saw it was already 8:30 p.m.
"Oh no!" Olima hastily rushed into the kitchen and started preparing the soup, knowing her stepmother would soon come downstairs to check if she had finished cooking.
Olima didn't want her stepmother to punish her for wasting time at the market and not arriving home on time. So, she hurriedly took out all the vegetable leaves and ingredients she had bought from the local market. She washed them thoroughly and quickly cut them into smaller pieces.
Olima unhooked the dried stockfish from the rubber-band and soaked it in a bowl of water to softened.
She cut the meat into smaller pieces and washed it thoroughly too, while turning on the gas cooker and placing an empty pot on it. She then started cooking the meat first.
With every second that ticked on the clock, Olima was sweating profusely, as she hurriedly prepared the vegetable soup.
She jumped in fright when she heard the kitchen door slide open. Mia walked into the kitchen and asked, "What took you so long to get home? I'm hungry."
Olima sighed in relief as Mia approached her and watched as she stirred the big pot of soup with a large spoon, tasting it to see if it needed more seasoning.
Olima offered the spoon to Mia to taste, and said, "Please taste the soup to see if it's okay, or if I should add a little salt."
Mia opened her right palm, and Olima dropped a few drops of soup from the spoon onto it. Mia tasted it and found the vegetable soup delicious.
However, Mia licked her palm but frowned, wanting her mother to discipline Olima for making her hungry. So, she told Olima, "Add more salt. It lacks salt."
Olima frowned, her brows furrowing at Mia. She tasted the soup again on her left palm and said, "But the soup is fine like this."
Mia frowned, grabbed the salt container, opened it, and poured more salt into the soup.
Olima gasped, "Mia!"
Just then, the kitchen door swung open, and Mrs. Gina entered wearing her long white nightgown.
Olima quickly shut the pot cover and took it off the gas cooker, as she hadn't prepared the semolina to accompany the vegetable soup.
Mrs. Gina asked, "What's going on here? It's already after 9 p.m., and you're still cooking the soup. Why?"
Olima quickly replied, "Nothing, ma'am. I'm almost done with the semolina."
Olima poured water into a new pot to prepare the semolina quickly, and Mrs. Gina turned her gaze to Mia and asked, "And what are you doing here?"
Mia muttered, "Mom, I'm hungry." She frowned and stomped her feet as she walked to her mother's side.
Mrs. Gina said, "Go and sit at the dining table first. The soup will be ready soon."
"Olima, be fast, please." Mia frowned and walked toward the kitchen door, shouting.
"Okay," Olima nervously replied. She breathed a sigh of relief as her stepmother and stepsister left the kitchen.
Olima sighed again as she finished preparing the semolina. She switched off the gas and used her light blue gown to wipe her sweaty forehead, then she served the semolina onto smaller plates.
Not wanting to anger her stepmother and stepsister, Olima quickly dished out their soup into smaller plates. Then she placed everything on a big tray, and carried it to the dining room to serve her family.
Mia sat in her usual dining chair across from her mother, and Olima walked up to the dining table to serve their meals.
Mrs. Gina adjusted her seat closer to the table to start eating, and Olima served them bowls of water to wash their hands.
Mia washed her hands first, followed by her mother. Olima asked, "Ma'am, do you need anything else?"
Mrs. Gina frowned and replied, "No, go and eat your food first."
Olima replied, "Okay." She walked away, but just then, Mia screamed, "Mom!"
Mrs. Gina glared at Mia and asked, "What's it?"
Olima paused beside the kitchen door and looked back at Mia.
Mia said, "Mom, the soup is very bitter."
Mrs. Gina's eyes narrowed at Mia suspiciously, and she looked at her soup since she had already washed her hands.
She dipped her right index finger into the small plate of soup and tasted it herself. Her face twisted in irritation as she immediately stood up from the dining chair and questioned Olima, "What's the meaning of this nonsense you cooked, Olima?"
Olima took a step back and replied, "Ma'am, I..."
Mrs. Gina moved away from her chair and rushed to Olima. She asked, "You what? Didn't you taste this soup at all?"
Olima stammered, "Yes, ma'am. I did.. Mia added more salt to the soup, and..."
Mrs. Gina slapped Olima vety hard on her left cheek. She approached Olima and dragged her roughly toward the table, bending her head into her small soup plate, and shouted, "Here is the soup, taste it yourself and eat the nonsense you cooked! You stupid girl! See how bitter the soup is and eat it yourself! Did Mia help you prepare the soup? Weren't you the only one in the kitchen when I entered?"
Olima cried and tried to explain, "Ma'am, please..."
Mrs. Gina slapped Olima again on her right cheek and yelled, "Shut up!"
Mrs. Gina started beating Olima up, while Mia smiled.
Mrs. Gina yelled, "You killed your parents, and now you want to kill me and my daughter too?"
Mrs. Gina continued beating Olima, and Olima begged, "Please, ma'am. I didn't spoil the soup. I'm innocent, please."
"Shut up! And get out of this house! I don't want to see your face here again! Nathan!" Mrs. Gina called out to the gate man, and he immediately ran into the living room and responded, "Yes, madam, you called?"
Mrs. Gina said, "Throw this girl out of this house. I don't want to see her here again."
Olima begged, "No, mother, please... I didn't spoil the soup."
Mrs. Gina slapped Olima again on her left cheek and said, "One more word from you, and I'll have you arrested tonight, you witch. Nathan, throw her outside now, and never let her into this mansion again, ever!"
Nathan grabbed Olima by her left arm and dragged her outside the mansion, which belonged to her late parents, dragging her toward the mansion's exit gate at around 10 p.m.
Mia smiled victoriously, and Mrs. Gina was very happy to have finally gotten rid of Olima, making the mansion her property. She went outside to check if Nathan had thrown Olima out.
