Rebecca's pov
Nurse Hilda vanished as quickly as she’d come, but her words lingered, heavy and unsettling: Our lives are in your hands. What kind of power would I—a slave—possibly have? If this man was as dangerous as they said, then wouldn’t I just end up at his mercy too? Did they honestly expect me to sacrifice myself for them? Because that’s exactly what it felt like.
“Becks!” Kayla’s voice called again, snapping me out of my thoughts. I looked up to see her running toward me, a bright smile on her face. Her energy had returned, and she seemed genuinely excited about something. I waited for her to catch her breath, managing a small smile of my own.
“Becks! You won’t believe it!” she said, still slightly breathless, her face lit with excitement.
I smiled a little wider, relieved to see her so animated. “It’s okay, Kayla, breathe first—you can tell me after.” I loved her obliviousness sometimes; anyone else might’ve noticed Nurse Hilda and questioned why she’d rushed off so suddenly, but Kayla was already lost in her own news.
She took a few deep breaths and finally grinned up at me. “Alright, alright! But you won’t believe it, Becks—some unknown deity must’ve heard our prayers. Getty’s hospital bills have been paid!” She practically bounced in place. “A nurse came and told me that someone cleared the fees, so the treatment can continue!”
I tried to mirror her excitement, though a pang of guilt gnawed at me. I already knew this would happen—Dr. Jenna had told me, and Nurse Hilda came back to remind me of the doctor’s “generosity.” Still, I said, “Really? That’s… such a relief. Do they know who paid?”
Kayla shook her head. “They know, but they wouldn’t tell me. Apparently, the person signed a non-disclosure agreement because they didn’t want to be known.”
“Oh?” I asked, trying to sound casual.
“Yeah! I wanted to thank the person in person, but I guess a letter will have to do. Can you believe it? Humans can be so generous sometimes—the person paid eighty thousand dollars in cash, and that doesn’t even cover the surgery fees. They agreed to pay for those later, too!”
“Eighty thousand?” I repeated, my voice faltering slightly. Dr. Jenna paid that much? And there’s still more to come for the surgery?
“Yes! Isn’t it amazing? We never could’ve come up with that kind of money. I’m so grateful to this mysterious person—they saved us, Becks!” She was practically glowing.
I nodded slowly. “Yeah… they really did.” But the relief I tried to feel was quickly replaced by guilt. Thank you felt small and inadequate. Dr. Jenna had already done so much, and now… if her life was really on the line because of this surrogate thing, could I really turn my back? Maybe I should give it more thought…
I took a breath and asked, “By the way, why did you say ‘he’? Did they tell you our ‘savior’ was a man?”
Kayla paused, then shrugged with a grin. “No, they didn’t say. I just figured, who else would pay that much money but a handsome hunk with billions?” She sighed dreamily, and I couldn’t help rolling my eyes.
“Typical, Kayla. That’s prejudice—it could just as easily be a woman,” I said, smiling lightly. I knew it was.
“Yeah, yeah, but it’d be totally romantic if it was a billionaire guy, no?” she teased.
I didn’t dignify that with an answer, just rolled my eyes. “Come on, let’s just go home.” I turned toward the hospital exit, with Kayla falling into step beside me. Somehow, her silliness gave me a small comfort I hadn’t expected. Maybe I wasn’t as alone as I’d thought.
