Rebecca's pov
It was late afternoon when we arrived at the territory. Because the pack’s land was kept secretive, humans were not allowed anywhere near the gates, with a strict 100-meter perimeter. So, the taxi we had ordered dropped us off about a kilometer from the gates. I wasn’t in the mood to talk. I had a lot on my mind, and Kayla seemed to feel the same. Her excitement had waned during the drive here. She slid into the seat next to me and closed her eyes. Even after we got out of the car, the silence continued. We walked in silence, taking about fifteen minutes to reach the territory.
As soon as we arrived, a knot tightened in my stomach. I dreaded the explanation we would have to give to the alpha and his luna after we had disappeared for a day and a half. I wondered if ‘he’ had said anything to speak up for us. Didn’t he promise to grant me one last favor as his mate? I hoped he had spoken to his parents on our behalf. I tried not to think about him, but the pain still lingered, and my wolf wasn’t speaking to me either.
At the gates, the guards didn’t question us and simply let us through, which was surprising. We walked slowly down the gravel path leading to the pack house, passing several patrol guards along the way. They seemed to be surveying the area, and I wondered if something was happening.
“Do you know what’s going on?” Kayla asked, noticing where I was looking.
“Nope. I’m as clueless as you are,” I answered, shaking my head.
As we walked further, we saw more pack members bustling about, moving with purpose as though they were preparing for something.
“Honestly, what’s going on? Why is Fred suddenly checking the gardens? Wasn’t that our job?” Kayla asked, pointing to Fred, a pack member who was in the garden, picking vegetables. She had a point— as slaves, we were responsible for cooking, cleaning, washing, running errands, and taking care of the food supply. It seemed odd for Fred to be checking the garden.
I shrugged and we turned toward the slave dorms. Just then, Mia came running toward us.
“Guys! So, how is Getty?” she asked, looking eager for an update. We hadn’t given her or anyone else the full details since we last told them Getty was stable.
“Oh, you won’t believe it! A secret benefactor paid all the medical fees. Getty’s surgery to repair her face is on!” Kayla exclaimed, her excitement reigniting.
“Really? That’s brilliant!” Mia’s eyes lit up. “I’ve got hot gossip of my own. Come on, let’s go to the dorms!”
“Gossip? Is it related to the busy atmosphere around here?” I asked, my curiosity piqued.
“Yes, it’s related to this... and Ryan,” Mia whispered.
“R-Ryan?” I stammered, shocked. His name was the last thing I wanted to think about, yet it slipped from my tongue so easily.
I quickly glanced around to make sure no one had overheard. “Come on, let’s head to the dorms. I’ll explain more later,” Mia urged, pulling us along.
