Chapter 11 What Happens Next?

1560 Words
The paramedics worked quickly to stabilize Mrs. Green as a crowd of people gathered around and whispered to each other. Levie and I stood side by side, both deep in thought about what had happened. Suddenly, I heard someone call out from the crowd, "Did anyone here see what actually happened?" A passerby stepped forward and explained to the officers that a car had come out of nowhere and hit Mrs. Green. Everyone gasped in shock as the gravity of the situation sunk in. As the paramedics loaded Mrs. Green into the ambulance, Levie turned to me with a worried look in her eyes. "I've seen her at the country club a few times," she said. "She was always so friendly, always chatting with someone." "Does she work out?" I asked, still in shock from the events that had just unfolded. "Why do you ask?" Levie responded, looking at me with a puzzled expression. "Just curious," I replied. "She's incredibly strong. She pushed you away with such ease. It was unbelievable." "Really? I haven't seen her at the gym," Levie said, her gaze thoughtful. "Maybe she's just naturally strong." We stood on the sidewalk as the ambulance pulled away, sirens blaring. "Your necklace. I saw it...it flashed red when Mrs. Green was about to grab you," Levie repeated, her eyes fixed on mine. I swallowed hard, trying to come up with a plausible explanation. "It flashed red? Really?" I asked, my voice shaking. I was still in shock from what had just happened with Mrs. Green, and now Levie's comments about my necklace were only making things worse. I felt like I was in a dream, with everything happening in slow motion. Levie nodded. "Yes, I saw it." "I don't know what you saw, Levie," I said, trying to sound confident. "It must have been a reflection from the sun." "The sun?" But Levie wasn't satisfied. She narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing me. "Are you sure that's all it was?" she asked. "Yes, I'm positive," I replied, my voice wavering slightly. "It just seems strange to me," Levie said. "I've never seen a reflection like that before." I felt like I was backed into a corner, with no way out. "Look, it was just a trick of the light. I don't know what else to say." Levie looked at me for a long moment, then sighed. "Where did you get that necklace anyway?" I didn't want to get into the real story behind the necklace, so I lied. "Oh, I got it at the store a while back," I said, hoping she would believe me. I was trapped, caught in my own lies. And I could see the skepticism in Levie's eyes. I just hoped she wouldn't push any further. "Alright," she said, her tone resigned. And then she looked at me for a long moment. "Levie? Why are you looking at me like that?" With a firm grip on my hand, she whisked me away from the prying eyes of the officers who had just finished interrogating us. The door to their squad car slammed shut behind us, signaling the end of their investigation for now. "What now?" I asked, hoping to steer the conversation away from the necklace and Professor Green. But Levie was relentless. She looked into my eyes and asked, "Tell me, then, why did Professor Green's wife come at you today? What's going on, Dahlia?" I bit my lower lip, and anger instantly surged through me. "You were right about Professor Green," I said, my voice low and steady. "What do you mean?" Levie asked, her eyes wide with confusion. "The day he asked me to come see him in his office, he tried to kiss me," I confessed, my voice trembling. In an instant, Levie's expression was fuming. "That son of a b*tch!" she exclaimed. "He's a monster," I agreed, still feeling the anger boiling inside of me. "And let me guess, since he jumped off the building, that instantly made him the victim!" Levie added, her voice filled with disdain. I nodded, feeling the weight of the situation finally lift off my shoulders. It was a relief to finally have someone who understood and believed me. "Good thing I was able to run away." "So you were with him before he jumped off the building?" she asked. "Yes," I simply replied. She spoke slowly, emphasizing each word with a hint of incredulity. "It's strange, Dahlia. Professor Green made an inappropriate advance toward you. I'd assume he was absolutely horny at that moment. But then you managed to get away, and then only moments later he jumped out of the window." She looked at me with a puzzled expression, as if something didn't quite add up. Feeling the weight of the truth heavy on my chest, I wanted so badly to confide in Levie, to reveal that Kael was the one who shoved Professor Green out the window. But fear held me back. I was well aware of the power and potential danger that came with Kael's Alpha status. "Is there something you’re not telling me, Dahlia?" As I was about to respond to Levie, my phone rang. The number was unknown, and a sense of unease washed over me. I answered, my heart racing with worry. "Ms. Dahlia Clarke?" "Yes? This Dahlia Clarke." "There’s been an emergency," the voice on the other end said. "Your brother Charlie has been in an accident." The words hit me like a ton of bricks. Charlie was my only family, and the thought of something happening to him filled me with fear. "Where is he?" I asked urgently. The caller hesitated before reluctantly giving me the address. "I'm on my way," I said before hanging up. I turned to Levie, who looked as worried as I felt. My heart sank as I realized the urgency of the situation. "Charlie's been in an accident. I have to go see him," I said, trying to hide the panic in my voice. Levie's eyes widened in shock. "What?! Another accident? What the hell is going on today?" she exclaimed. "Let's go, I'll come with you," she offered, grabbing my hand. I felt a wave of gratitude wash over me as I realized that I wasn't going to face this alone. "Thank you." I was on the brink of leaving when Levie's phone rang. She stepped away to take the call, and when she came back, her expression was apologetic. "Dahlia, I'm so sorry, but Callie just called. She needs me to pick her up," she said in a hurry. "You go ahead, I'll meet you there as soon as I can. Just text me the address." Despite her reassurance, I felt a pang of worry. I didn't waste any time; I sprinted towards my car, my mind racing with thoughts of Charlie and the possible danger he could be in. I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease as I drove off. The further I drove, the more isolated the road became. The only sound was the crunching of gravel under my tires. I could feel my heart beating faster with each mile I drove. The sense of unease grew stronger. When I arrived, the manor seemed to be the only building around, and I wondered what kind of business could be done in such a remote location. The feeling that something was not right grew stronger as I approached. I was filled with a sense of dread as I entered the gate and drove towards the manor. I pulled over and texted Levie the address and told her that it was a good 45-minute drive so she better hurry up. I quickly I stepped out of my car, I was greeted by the sight of dozens of homeless children. Their eyes were piercing, almost glowing in the dim light that surrounded the area. The atmosphere was eerie and filled with a sense of danger. I felt as though I was being watched, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I was in the wrong place. Despite my fear, I pushed forward and started searching for Charlie. The manor seemed to loom over me, its decrepit state only adding to the eerie feeling that had taken hold of me. The windows were boarded up, leaving the inside shrouded in darkness. The surrounding area was remote, with no signs of life for miles. I couldn't help but wonder why the man who called me here had brought me to such a desolate place. I began calling out Charlie's name, but there was no response. The only sounds that echoed through the area were the sounds of the children's footsteps as they ran around. It was as if they were playing some sort of game, and I was the target. I tried to call the man who had brought me here, but my phone had no signal. I felt a sense of panic set in as I realized I was completely alone, and something was not right. I decided to walk back to my car when I sensed someone behind me. Just as I was about to turn around, a cloth covered my mouth, and a strong odor filled my nostrils. The next thing I knew, everything went black. The last thought that crossed my mind was, what will happen to me next?
