As soon as I touched Kael's mask, his eyes snapped open, and his hands were on my wrist. With his sudden movement, I stumbled over my words, trying to come up with a reason for my actions.
My heart was pounding in my chest as Kael's piercing gaze drilled into me. His grip on my wrist tightened, making me wince with pain.
"What were you trying to do?" he asked, his voice low and dangerous.
I stammered, trying to come up with a believable explanation. My mind was blank, and all I could do was shake my head in fear and stutter, "I-I was just trying to wipe your sweaty forehead." I tried to make it seem believable, but I could tell from the look on Kael's face that he wasn't buying it.
"I'm not feeling sweaty," Kael's eyes narrowed, and I could tell he didn't believe me.
I scrambled for another excuse, but my mind was blank. I couldn't think of anything to say. Kael's grip on my wrist was tight, and I knew I was in trouble.
"I-I’m sorry… I was just curious."
Kael's eyes narrowed, and then he released my wrist. I quickly pulled my hand back, rubbing the sore spot.
"I need to go," he said curtly, his tone sharp and abrupt. Without another word, he rolled over, his muscles tensing as he stood up from the bed. In one fluid motion, he gathered his boxers, pants, and shirt.
As I watched Kael get dressed, making sure his mask stayed in place, my mind was racing with all sorts of questions and scenarios.
Why did he always have to have that mask on? Was he trying to hide something? Something that would change everything?
I couldn't help but feel a twinge of fear and excitement at the thought of what could be hiding behind that mask.
"Are you okay, Pet?" he asked, cutting off my reverie.
I nodded.
"Don’t worry, I’ll make you scream again the next time we fu*k."
My heart suddenly hammered in my chest at the thought.
Kael dug into the front pocket of his pants. My heart raced as I saw what he had retrieved from his pocket - a glittering necklace. The pendant was a sparkling crystal, encased in a delicate golden setting, brilliantly reflecting the lamplight filtering in from outside. The chain was thin and delicate, and it shimmered against the darkness of the room.
He handed me the necklace. His eyes were locked on mine.
"I have important business to attend to in the coming days, and I won't be able to be by your side to protect you," he explained. "Wear this necklace, and I'll be able to find you wherever you are."
I felt like I had no choice but to comply, and I took the necklace from him.
With a steady gaze, he looked at me while I fastened the necklace around my neck. As I looked down at it, it felt like a collar, a symbol of my obedience. The golden setting was sparkling, and the necklace alone looked like it was expensive, but to me it felt like a prison, limiting my freedom.
He looked at the necklace, scrutinizing it briefly before shifting his attention to me. He held my gaze for a moment, as if assessing my reaction, before making his way towards the door.
"Wait," I called out, feeling a wave of panic wash over me. "Where are you going?"
Kael paused, his hand on the doorknob. He turned to face me, his expression unreadable. "I already told you, Pet, I need to go," he said simply.
And with that, he was gone, the door slamming shut behind him.
I lay there in my bed, feeling a mixture of fear and confusion. I took a deep breath and asked myself again, what could be hiding behind that mask that Kael always wore? Could it be something monstrous, or maybe a handsome Alpha?
As soon as Kael left, I found myself lost in thought for the remainder of the morning. But as the sun climbed higher into the sky and noon approached, my best friend Levie called, inviting me to join her on a shopping spree.
I tried to reason with Levie, the sound of her cheerful voice rang through the receiver of my phone.
"Levie, I still have classes to attend today," I said, my voice slightly anxious. "There's no way I can skip them."
But she wouldn't take "no" for an answer.
"Relax," she said, "Professor Green's class has been canceled. Apparently, there's an ongoing investigation into his recent demise."
A knot formed in my stomach at the mention of Professor Green.
Levie went on, "So, we still have a couple of hours until our next class. Come on, it'll be fun. We can grab lunch and do some shopping. What do you say?"
I sighed, knowing I was beaten. "Okay, okay. I'll meet you at the mall." I agreed, unable to resist the persuasive tone in Levie's voice.
In the end, I gave in. I quickly changed into a comfortable outfit and headed to the mall, ready for a half day of shopping and catching up with my best friend. Despite my initial reluctance, I was looking forward to some much-needed retail therapy.
When I arrived, I saw Levie bouncing with excitement, and she was already picking out clothes for me to try on. I couldn't help but smile at her infectious energy.
As we stepped out of the fourth shop we visited, I led the way to our next destination. However, Levie soon caught up and playfully teased me about my unusual walk.
"Whoa there, what happened to you last night? Did you finally find someone to share your bed with?" she asked with a mischievous grin on her face.
Levie's comment caught me off guard, and I felt my cheeks heat up with embarrassment. I tried to laugh it off and play it cool, but she could see right through me. She always had a way of knowing when I was hiding something, and this time was no different.
"Come on, spill the beans," she prodded, grinning mischievously. "Did you have some wild one last night?"
I couldn't help but roll my eyes at her teasing. "No, Levie, have some wild one last night," I replied, trying to keep my tone light. "I had a lot on my mind last night and couldn't sleep. That's why I was walking a little weird."
Levie's expression softened, and she put a comforting arm around me. "Hey, it's okay. If you ever want to talk about anything, I'm here for you."
I blushed, feeling the heat rise to my cheeks. I didn't want to talk about it, so I tried to divert the conversation.
"Have you ever heard of werewolves?" I asked her, trying to steer the conversation in a different direction.
Levie looked at me with a raised eyebrow and said, "Werewolves? You mean those creatures from movies, books, and TV? They're not real, silly." She laughed, giving me a playful nudge.
I shrugged, pretending like it was no big deal, but deep down I was relieved to have the attention off of me. We continued our shopping trip, and we spent hours trying on different outfits, shoes, and accessories, laughing and chatting about our lives.
Levie always had a way of making me forget my worries and just enjoy the moment.
Eventually, it was time for us to head to class, but not before Levie had convinced me to buy a new dress and a pair of shoes that she thought would look great on me.
As we neared the entrance of our college, a woman in her early forties emerged and lunged toward me, her hand raised and ready to strike. My best friend, Levie, quickly stepped in, recognizing the woman as Professor Green's wife.
"You fu*king b*tch!"
Levie immediately stepped in, trying to stop the woman from attacking me. She yelled, "Stop! What are you doing?"
Despite my best friend’s best efforts, the woman continued her advance towards me, her eyes filled with anger and accusation.
"What the heck did you do to my husband?" she yelled, lunging towards me.
Levie tried to intervene again, but the woman was too strong. She pushed her away, then turned back to me, her eyes blazing with anger.
"You ruined his life, his career, and now you'll pay the price," the woman hissed.
Just as she was about to reach me, a bright red light suddenly illuminated from the necklace around my neck. It was like a beacon, drawing everyone's attention. And then, in an instant, a car came speeding down the road, hitting the woman and sending her flying backwards.
Levie rushed over to me, her eyes wide with fear and shock. "Are you okay? What just happened?"
She and I were stunned, looking at each other in disbelief as we tried to process what had just happened.
"I-I don’t know. She…a car hit her. I don’t know how it happened." I shook my head, still trying to process what had just occurred. The woman lay motionless on the ground, and the driver of the car stumbled out, looking dazed and confused.
It was clear that the necklace Kael had given me was more than just a simple piece of jewelry. But what did it mean, and why had it activated in such an intense moment?
