Jake
"You and I both know that will never happen. Whatever you feel like you have to do to me, then go ahead and do it because I will never help you get to my mother."
Vincent reached his hand back, and before I could make out what he was doing, his hand came out and struck me in the face. "Then that would make you a fool. Your pack territory will soon become a warzone because of that choice. A lot of people you care about will die. Maybe even your mate, or maybe I will use her as my own personal slave."
I let out a low growl, stepped one foot back from him before letting Jet take over. It was times like these, I didn't mind giving control over to Jet. At the time of a werewolf's birth, we are entirely human. It is only a few minutes after our birth that our wolves are chosen by the moon goddess herself. Wolves like Jet have been around for a long time. It made no sense to me as to why the moon goddess paired him with me because he was much stronger than I was, mentally and physically. He was everything that I wished I could be for my pack. A wolf like Jet was made to become an Alpha, not someone like me.
Focus, Jake. Vincent is the enemy right now. Clear everything from your mind, or else I will not be able to concentrate on the real threat.
He was right. This was no time to be thinking of such things. I shut my eyes and let everything go, only seeing what was happening through Jet's eyes.
"Oh, look at who we have here," Vincent said with a sadistic smile. "Jake, your wolf is something to admire. I could tell when the switch happened almost instantly. What are you going to do, attack me?"
Jet's voice was a touch more profound than mine. That must have to do with how long he has been around for because his age was starting to show through the way he spoke. "My name is Jet, and if I wanted to attack you at this precise moment, then I would have shifted into wolf form. Now, no more messing around. You have not only messed with Jake or me, but you have put our family in the middle of this. If you know what is best for you, then you will walk away. This is your first and final warning. I am not known to give but one."
Vincent began clapping his hands, which only added to Jet's aggression toward our natural world enemies. "Color me impressed. You wouldn't happen to be the werewolf Jet from back in 1959, now would you?"
"The very one," Jet growled.
"Now that is even more impressive. I heard a lot about you over the years. Because of you, your pack back then came out unscathed. How is that a wolf such as yourself has gone all these years without finding a mate until you are joined with this here human?"
See, Jet was special. Most wolves died when their human died, but not Jet. From the moment I was old enough to communicate with him, I knew how special he really was. Back in the fifties, Jet and the moon goddess worked alongside each other. He was from her elite team that helped with the continuation of the mating bond. Without a moon goddess, the mating bond would not exist; therefore, she had to be protected at all costs. Jet has told me his story a thousand times, and every time it seemed to get more interesting. All Jet has ever told me was that I was the first human he has been paired with within a long time. I, too, wondered why the moon goddess allowed him to be with a human after all these years.
"That story is only told to those that are deserving of hearing it, back to the matter at hand. Kalen, you either turn away now and leave, or this will turn into a bloodbath fairly quickly. I do not want that for the same reasons you don't, but if I must, I will protect those that Jake cares about."
Vincnet had a dark, mysterious look about him that made me shiver. "I will be keeping my eye on you, Jet. You would be more of a prize than that hybrid any day." He stopped and bowed in front of him. "Until next time. My daughter, Davina, will be seeing the two of you very soon. With every day that passes, that spell only becomes stronger. I will get what I want. It is only a matter of time." An immense gulf of wind came out of nowhere, and with the blink of an eye, Vincent was gone.
'What are we going to do now, Jet? Vincent is right. This spell is getting stronger. The more time that passes makes it harder to keep in control.'
"We will go straight home to find Stella. She is the key to all this, considering she is our mate. The spell seems to weaken around her. We will have to try to explain to her the best that we can about what is going on. Someone needs to know what is coming, and she may be the only one we can tell."
'Would that not be putting her at risk?'
"Yes, Jake, it would be, but we don't have many other options at this point. If we cannot warn the people of this pack, they can easily find a way to take your mother. We cannot let that happen."
I took a moment to let this all sink in. For the first time since meeting Davina, I felt like I could breathe. Getting to tell Stella of everything that was going on would bring so much relief and would also give her the answers she has been looking for. We began to head back toward the direction of the packhouse, which was a fair bit away. 'Jet, are you ever going to tell me why the moon goddess chose now to pair you with someone after all this time?'
He let out a low, deep sigh. "The moon goddess paired me with you because she had a premonition, one that she thought I might be able to stop from happening. Part of me believes that it is also more than that. I think she knew that finally, after all these years, that I would find my mate. For many years I thought something was wrong with me. I thought that I was one of those wolves that were destined to be alone, only to be used to stop things like this from happening. You have no idea how it feels to be the only one of your kind that had not found a love like the love you get from a mating bond. That was why I never pushed the issue with you as your parents did. I thought you would be just like me, destined to be unmated. When we laid our eyes upon our mate that first night, my heart stopped beating. I have been waiting for what seems like forever to feel that feeling. That is why I will do whatever it takes to protect her at all costs. If that vampire thinks that he will put his hands on her, he has another thing coming."
Everything he has said was fascinating, but the one thing that stood out more than the rest was about the premonition the moon goddess had. 'What was her premonition?'
"We will save that for another time. Right now, we have more important things to focus on."
This was the most that we have ever spoken to each other before. I always thought that Jet was some annoying, old wolf that only liked to come out to speak when he had something smartass to say. It got me thinking of how lucky I was to have been paired up with a wolf like him. I knew now that I would have to step it up and be the best that I could be to add to his power.
By the time we got back to the packhouse, Jet had given control back over to me. When we stepped inside the house, everyone from our pack was there standing around, talking amongst themselves. When they saw me enter, the chatter died down, and silence took over.
"Jake," my father called out from across the living room, making everyone in between us split off to the side, clearing a way for me.
I eyed everyone around me suspiciously. When I got up in front of my father, he grabbed my shoulder and walked us in the direction of his office. Okay, this was weird. Something bad must have happened here.
"Dad, what is going on?"
When he opened the door, Nyko was inside pacing back and forth. He had large saggy bags under his eyes, which let me know that he had been crying. Even some of the stronger wolves couldn't fight back emotions.
"Nyko's daughter, Stella, was taken a few minutes ago."
I nearly dropped to my knees, but before I could, Jet took over, shifting instantly. He stuck his nose to the ceiling and let out a sound between a howl and a cry, then took off running, smashing through the doors as he did. Every thought he was having was coming through to me as clear as day. He was in pain, so much pain. The pain was incredibly severe for it to be something not of physical pain but internal pain.
He is f*****g dead!
I knew what he was feeling was justified. Our plan to tell Stella everything was now out the window, putting our pack in even more danger. Without Stella, the spell would only continue to grow stronger until even she couldn't stop it. The only shot that we had now was to find her and bring her back home safely. The problem with that plan was we had no way of knowing where she was. It would be like searching for a needle in a haystack.
We can sniff her out. Because of her being our mate, her scent is stronger than that of any other wolf. We should be able to track her as long as we can pick up her scent.
