Chapter Eight

Jake             I was so stupid. Why didn’t I use my brain to realize that Stella was now right across the hall and could hear everything being said from inside my room? Now this situation has turned from bad to bad and complicated. If Davina knew that Stella heard everything, I knew that she wouldn’t hesitate to kill her. And I was not about to let that happen, regardless of what Stella now knew.             My hand rested on the back of my neck as I tried to come up with something fast that she would buy. “What are you talking about? Nothing was being said about a damn spell.”              Stella was still standing at the foot of my bed with her arms crossed over her chest. Even mad like this, she looked breathtaking. “I may not be the smartest wolf there is, but I damn sure can hear just fine. If you didn’t want to get caught talking about something you weren’t supposed to be talking about, then maybe you shouldn’t have said it in a house full of werewolves that have super hearing.”             One simple chuckle pushed through my lips. “Maybe those wolves shouldn’t be eavesdropping in on a conversation they are not a part of. If you would have been sitting over there minding your own business, then you wouldn’t have heard a thing.”             “Oh, so is this the real you then? Have you grown tired of the game you are playing with me?”             What was she going on about now? “You think that I am playing a game with you?” I scoffed with disbelief at this impossible girl. “That is a ridiculous thing to say. I think I have made it pretty clear how I feel about you.”             She crossed her eyes at me as her hands released from the cross position they were in over her chest, down to her sides. “Jake, you haven’t made one thing clear. All of this is very confusing. You have a horrible way of showing how you feel about me. With your hands all over that girl, I wouldn’t have thought you gave a damn about me.”             “I have told you that things are exactly simple for me right now. Trust me, I would love to tell you all about it, but I can’t. Now, leave before Davina comes back.” I wasn’t trying to be short with her. I was only worried about what would happen if Davina returned and Stella was standing in my room. She was already suspicious enough, and I did not want to add anything else to stir up more trouble. The most important thing right now was keeping everyone safe, but more importantly, keeping Stella safe. If anything were to happen to her because of me, I would never be able to live with myself.             Stella turned around as if she was heading toward the door but stopped right before opening it. “I get it, Jake. We all have secrets that we can’t tell anyone about because those secrets are not ours to tell. Trust me when I say that I am familiar with that saying all too well. It does become an issue when you purposely go out of your way to hurt those you say you care so much about. I will back off. I can see that none of this is my business. Do me one favor and don’t ever try coming around me again. Having you near me but so far is almost too painful to handle. If I ever have a shot of making it out of this alive, then I need you to leave me alone in return.”             That wasn’t going to happen. I was incapable of leaving her alone. “I cannot promise you that. Stella, you…” I struggled to find the right words. “you mean more to me than you will ever know. If I could have it my way, I would be with you, but I can’t.” It was hard pushing through the spell to tell Stella exactly how I felt, but it seemed to be easier when I was around her. When I was with Stella, controlling the spell came a little easier. It was the opposite with Davina. When she was around, I couldn’t control my words or actions the majority of the time. All I could think about was her.             “Then it is a good thing I am calling a stop to this now. I refuse to be the pathetic girl that you are only with when she isn’t around. It makes no sense to me why you would choose to be with someone that is not your mate, but as I saw you two out there, it made it a little easier. You are in love with her. It may be that you don’t want to break her heart or mine, for which one, I’m not sure. Leave me to try and move on, Jake. Seeing you with her is just too much.” We could both hear Davina downstairs, getting ready to make her way back up. “Goodbye, Jake.”             Between Jet’s anger and mine, it was a wonder how I didn’t break everything inside my room. The only thing I managed to break before Davina came back through the door was the little wooden desk that I have had since I was six years old.             Davina came up from behind me and wrapped her arms around me. “Something on your mind? C’mon, you can tell me,” she stated sarcastically.              Like that was going to happen. “It’s nothing. Where were you?”             “Just getting a good look around is all. How about we go for a little walk? It seems as if you need a little stress reliever.”             Why did she care if I was stressed or not? By now, I knew that whatever her plans were, it was going to destroy this pack. She claims to want to become my Luna but still wants to have control over me. In my mind, that only meant that what she was planning was going to hurt someone I loved.             I shook my head no. “I’m fine. I will get plenty of stress relief when I go sparring with my father later.”             Davina shot me a wry smile. “Oh, I insist. This little walk will be very informative. I wouldn’t want you to miss out on some fun.”             Before I could say anything else, Davina was grabbing my hand with a tight grip and leading me down the stairs and out the front doors. I decided not to say anything because I was slightly curious as to what she was referring to. If I said too much now, she might not be willing to be so informative as she just mentioned. She led us into the woods for a good hour before we finally came to a stop when we came upon a small pond. Across the pond was a strange man standing there, looking down at the stilled water. Whoever he was, he must have been waiting for us. He had the same scent as Davina, which only meant one thing. He, too, was a vampire. This vampire was much older than Davina and had some of the same features as she did.              He lifted his head as he noticed us walking closer. “Hello, Jake Dooley. My name is Vincent. I am Davina’s father. You must be wondering what is going on with you and why you are nowhere. Well, today, you will be getting some answers. Davina, honey, keep an eye out while we take a little walk. Make sure you two were not followed.” She happily obeyed his order and skipped off in the direction of the woods. “Has my daughter been accommodating?”             I could easily sense that Vincent was much stronger than his daughter. “Can we cut the bullshit small talk and get straight to the point? Why am I here?”            Vincent let out a small laugh. His voice was deep when he talked. Almost so deep that it was hard to make out what he was saying at times. “I like a guy that can appreciate the severity of a situation and wants to get straight to the point. Well, Jake, my daughter has chosen you because of who you are and who your parents are. Blake and Roxy Dooley, the infamous werewolf/hybrid power couple. Their stories have been heard from all around the world. My favorite one was the one about when she was pregnant with you, infected with silver. Silver, a lethal thing for a werewolf.”             “Do you have a point?”             Vincent looked down at the ground to try and hide the apparent grin he was displaying. “The point is that I want your mother for reasons of my own. She can make hybrids, and I want her to do that for me. Roxy is an incredible woman that deserves far more than that werewolf mate of hers. A hybrid such as her should have the world bowing at her feet.”             “She cannot turn vampires into hybrids. The transformation only works one that starts off as a werewolf. My mother would be of no use to you.”             “On the contrary. The details are not what is important here. What is important is that your mother will work for what I have planned.”             “Then why do you need me? It seems pointless to involve her son.”             Vincent stopped walking and turned to me, placing his ice-cold hand on my shoulder. “Davina has spelled you with a spell called Distraction of Reason. It is a spell that makes your mind see, hear, do, and say what she wants you to. The spell makes you believe that she has taken control over you, but its reality is that it is a distraction spell. The particular distraction spell she used on you is the strongest of its kind. Boy, that thing sure has done some damage. You have not seen anything yet. The longer that spell takes hold of you, your body will begin to break down. There is a reversal spell that I would be willing to share with you if you helped me get what I want.”             If this man thought I was going to help him, he was sorely mistaken. I would rather die than hand my mother over to some bloodsucking vampires. That would mean that this was my end. I would have to make the most of the time I had until I had no more. Once I was back at the packhouse, I would find Isabel to help me warn my family, even if it killed me.
