My eyes stared at Elijah as the corner of his lips curled upward. It didn’t feel right. He was up to a big mess and I could tell.
"Hm, yeah, we are just talking about that." Dom cleared his throat and held my hand before responding to Elijah. It was to ensure I was his mate.
"Dom----," I whispered, not finishing what I was going to say when Dom turned his neck to me and gave me a smile.
"I believe you," he whispered, still clasping my hand. I watched Vania’s gaze travel down to my hand, and her body flinched a little.
"It was unfortunate. That wild rogue needs to be chased after. I don’t think it is safe outside for our pack members when there is a wild rogue on the loose," Elijah stated determinedly, denying what Vania had told Dom about me faking the panic.
"Oh really? I am so glad you were there to protect my Luna." Dom clenched his jaw at the beginning when he glared at his sister and then acted normal for Elijah.
"It was a coincidence. If I hadn’t listened to their conversation, I would have never known." Elijah explained what exactly happened, and it relieved me. I was even confused that he didn’t lie to twist the reality.
"Your mate didn’t even thank me, by the way," he seemed to be joking but it gave out a lot to Dom, "She was angry that I came instead of you," that addition literally must have felt like a slap against Vania’s cheeks. It was a reassuring statement that Vania lied about me wanting to spend some alone time with her mate.
Her lips parted to gasp after getting exposed, but Lady Helen was there for her rescue.
"Mate bond is a strong feeling. It sometimes makes you act out of jealousy," she gently tapped her hand over her daughter’s shoulder to explain her actions.
"I think we are all tired and should rest now," Vania was still able to say in front of her brother, even after getting caught in a lie.
"You all should rest; I have pack matters to attend to." I will see you guys around next week. " Elijah slipped his arm out of Vania’s grip and walked out of the living room, leaving the messy family behind.
"What was that? You are now going to lie about my mate?" Dom didn’t spend a single second before calling Vania out.
"I was insecure. It was my engagement dinner, and she was calling you, making Elijah leave. I was frustrated, so I thought maybe she had called him." She changed her tone to give her brother a lame excuse for her lies.
"Don’t even try to lie to me, Vania. You said Ravine only called you to inform you that she had reached home safely. Why would she lie amidst such a terrifying situation?" Dom had never been this loud towards his sister before. I was beginning to see the difference between him from the last time.
It all happened because I proved I was not going to be a doormat. It was because I took a stand for myself and defended myself when others were trying to assassinate my character.
"Look what she is making you do," Lady Helen, who didn’t have much sense of right and wrong, shook her head in disapproval.
"And I am an i***t who would just listen to my mate and follow her orders? I have my own brain that works fine. Your daughter tried to fool me. She left my mate stranded on the road. How do you want me to react to that?" The more he was shouting, the stronger his grip was around my hand.
"Vania! Apologize to your brother for your irresponsible behavior," Lady Helen understood she couldn’t make Dom convince otherwise of what he had perceived of this situation. Their narrative was falling apart, and they were seeing red flags now. I noticed Vania secretly sharing a defeated glance with her mother and then lowering her head to apologize to her brother.
"I am sorry," she whispered, not at all sounding genuine.
"Is it me that you left stranded? Is it me whose character you were assassinating? No! right? Then why don’t you apologize to the Luna of the pack?" He let go of my hand only so that he could step aside and make his sister apologize to me.
The look of disgust when hearing she has to apologize to me suited Vania’s face. She should stay shocked all the time. Causing me to die wasn’t something small that I could forgive her for. But thankfully, Dom had taken a stand for me this time.
"I am so—rry!" she said under her clenched jaw, not raising her eyes out of anger. I get it. It wasn’t easy for her to bow down to someone who she intended to kill. His family’s hate for my being was just absurd. I have never done anything to upset them.
Yes! I figured it all out. It was Lady Helen and Vania’s idea to get me killed by that rogue.
"I am also investigating Martin." Once Vania’s lie was out of the way, Dom focused on Martin.
"Why? He is a trusted man of mine," Lady Helen defending Martin, raised eyebrows at her.
"Really? Then why did your trusted man leave my Luna on the road and come back home to have a chill conversation with the others?" Dom had now turned to his mother, who was taking a brief pause to come up with a lie.
"Exactly. I was speechless, too. Anyway, I am heading to work and leaving my Luna behind. Just make sure nobody acts out of jealousy and upsets her more," Dom grunted when grabbing my hand once again to lead me back to our room. It was surprising how he defended me. One could make so much difference by making their worth known.
"I am sorry on behalf of all of them. You never complained before, and I never realized they were so rude to you." He was holding my hands and apologizing nonstop. He wasn’t wrong, though. His family had been disgusting towards me even before our mating ceremony, and I never spoke a word. I dealt with it in silence. So when I suddenly started complaining, it didn’t sound too convincing to him.
"It is okay. But I am happy you took my side," I replied, slowly making my way into his arms. He wrapped his arms around my body and chuckled softly.
"What?" I broke the hug to slap his chest lightly, making him fake pain.
"We never got a chance to celebrate our mating ceremony. We didn’t go out---," he was all smiles and thinking about planning a vacation when I reminded him that there is more that we need to think of in regard to our marriage than planning just a vacation.
"We didn’t mark each other." The instant I brought up the main issue, I saw his smile fading away.
"Oh!" The response I got instantly swiped the smile from my lips.
"I hadn’t expected that to be brought up again for some time." He slipped his hands free just so that he could steal his eyes from me and turn his body towards his laptop.
"Why not? Don’t you think it is something concerning that we never marked each other?" It hurt me that he acted like marking each other wasn’t a priority.
"See! A seer has told my mother that if I mark my mate in the early months of my marriage, either one of us will die." He opened the laptop to avoid looking into my eyes and pretending like he was working.
"Wait! We need to talk about this," I requested for him to turn his laptop off and focus on us. Why didn’t I know about this seer and this prophecy?
"Ravine! There is nothing to talk about. We cannot have a physical relationship for three months," he stated as he shut his laptop and shoved it in his bag. He said it so casually as if we had discussed it already.
"We cann---," I didn’t finish, it was a shock that he didn’t even talk to me about it and just agreed with his mother. It was as if it didn’t even bother him, but Dom being so chill about it bothered me now.
