Chapter 17 Anne felt her life grind to a halt. The world continued without her. The tingling in her body that warned her of a memory rose to a scream that wanted to drag her into nothing. Everything was a blinding glare of white. She heard Evan’s voice, still chattering away, not aware she was frozen into her memory. “Anne?” Evan’s voice could have been coming down a long, twisting tunnel instead of right beside her. That one word drew out, echoing, doubling back on itself until it sounded like dozens of boys were speaking at once. Still she couldn’t move. Anne sat on a hospital bed in a cold, white room.
