Xavier's Point of View
The sun was high in the sky and the sound of children playing could be heard. The smell of the bbq filled the air and my mouth began to water. The party was in full swing and even though I thought this was a bad idea I couldn't help but smile. No matter what was happening, the pack seemed to be happy.
I approached the field next to the packhouse and could see kids playing tag and the adults sitting at a giant picnic table. It was huge, they must have lined many tables together to make it that size. And in the distance you could see the woods. The closer I got, the more my mouth watered, but I saw my father talking to a council member and the smile I had plastered on my face disappeared.
I couldn't hear what they were saying as I got closer to them, but suddenly they stopped talking and looked at me.
"Son," my father said.
"Everything okay?" I asked.
"Of course. The meal will be ready soon. The alpha wants everyone to eat together," the council member said.
"As it should be."
"We will speak soon alpha," the council member said as he looked at my father and then walked away.
"What was that about?"
"The specialist will be here tomorrow. I am to report to the medical facility first thing in the morning. Lily as well."
I looked at the children playing and saw Lily with the other children. "What do you think is going to happen?"
"I am not sure but the council is not happy with Zoey."
"It's not her fault she was born. She didn't ask to be born."
"I know that, but the council has laws. I'm not sure what they plan to do, but let's hope no one suffers."
"I agree."
My father and I talked for a little bit and soon the alpha called everyone to the table. The children kept playing but us adults sat down. The alpha remained standing.
"Thank you all for coming. I know this week has been one hell of a week. I would first like to thank the council for coming and aiding us during our time of need." Those around us began to clap and I wanted to scream. The pack had no clue what was going on. Once everyone stopped clapping, the alpha began to speak again. "I also want to give thanks to the goddess above for returning Lily to us. She may not be our pack member, but she was entrusted to us and her recovery." The pack began to cheer louder.
"I know my niece has caused us a bit of a problem but soon we will have the answers we need. Until then, eat, drink and enjoy yourself." The pack began to cheer once more and then began to grab and pass food around.
I wasn't happy with what was said, but there was nothing I could do. If I left, I couldn't help protect my mate and I had no way of getting to her. So right now I am stuck and playing pretend.
As food began to pass around, those around me began to talk. I put a burger, potato salad, hot dog and more on my plate.
"Not a bad spread," my dad said as he put some of the food on his plate.
Wolves could eat a lot, so it was no shocker that everyone's plates were piled high, but once they began to eat, the talking stopped. The kids kept playing even though their parents called them to eat, but no one minded. We made sure to leave enough food for them.
As I took a bite of my burger, I heard a loud roar and suddenly everyone stopped. It was as if time stood still. The trees began to move and suddenly a howl could be heard in the distance. Men around the table got up and began to run towards the children. My father and I stood up and began to run. We could hear the alpha yelling for the children to run towards them, but the kids stood in place. It was as if they couldn't hear us.
The trees began to move faster and suddenly something was flying towards us. As it landed, I saw it was a mangled wolf. This caused those around us to instantly change into wolves.
"Get as many children as you can," I heard my father say right before he transformed into his wolf and began to run faster. Being an alpha allowed him to be stronger and faster than everyone else in our pack.
As the wolves got closer to the children, they all fell to the ground and began to whine and whimper.
'Dad are you okay?' I said through our link but he did not respond. All of us who were in human form stopped and looked at our pack members on the ground. They were thrashing in pain.
The roar suddenly got loud and I looked at the children. Several figures stood in the tree line and began to approach the children.
"RUN!" I screamed at the children and began to run again, but was hit by an invisible wall, causing me to bounce back. I stood up and tried again, but the same thing happened.
"What can we do?" One of the pack members asked.
"I am not sure."
I could hear pack members screaming, wolves crying out in pain and mothers screaming for their children as they ran closer and yet there was nothing we could do. As we watched these figures move closer to the children, I felt defeated. There was nothing we could do.
Parents began to run along the invisible force trying to find an opening while others kept running into the same spot hoping to break it. I walked over to my dad and put my hand on him, hoping his wolf could feel me.
