"Mr Joy, please settle this for us." Eva sobbed with swollen cheeks.
"Does that fool even know what marriage is?" Shawn doubted it.
"She wasn't always like this. Our theory is that she doesn't want to go back to the hospital. That's why she planned everything. We wanted to tell you right after we learned of the truth, but Eva was hurt so bad that we failed to inform you as soon as should." Jeff bowed his head and apologized.
"So Eva, do you want to marry me?" Roy asked.
"Of course, Mr Roy. If my sister didn't do this, I would have married you already." Eva cried.
And soon, all the Reeds began to cry.
Shawn was starting to believe it.
Rachel took the opportunity to add fuel: "Mr Lewis, please trust us. We'd be fools if we think that things like this can be kept a secret for long. If we really plotted all of this, we'd be long gone instead of staying here, 'cause we know we won't stand a chance if your family finds out. It's all that fool's doing!"
"Mr Roy, I was dying to marry you..."
Eva took Roy's hand in hers, but the minute she did that, Ann barged in, slapping her hand away and glaring at her: "Hubby is Anny's!"
Ann had been here a while. She hid behind the door and heard everything.
So the Reeds wanted her to be the scapegoat?
And they supposed she would just come quietly? No way.
She wasn't surprised that Rachel and Eva would try to blame this on her, but Jeff, her own father...now there was just no one in this family she still cared for.
"Is she the fool?" Shawn asked.
"Anny is not a fool. Anny is Mrs Lewis. Hubby is ill. Anny protects hubby."
Ann stood before Roy like the way a hen would protect its baby chicken.
This gave Shawn a good impression.
That was a quality he wanted in his granddaughter-in-law...but that didn't change the fact she was a fool...
Jeff went over and gripped Ann's wrist: "How dare you hurt your sister!"
Jeff raised his hand to slap Ann, but before he could, Ann hid into Roy's arms, sobbing: "Hubby protects Anny. Daddy is hitting Anny again."
"What are you talking about? When did I hit you before? I only hit you when you're not a good girl and wouldn't take your pills. But Eva is your sister, you heartless thing! You need to go back to the hospital, now!" Jeff roughly grabbed her hand, trying to pull her up.
"Hubby! Hubby protects Anny." Ann managed to say between sobs.
"Get your hands off of her!" Roy warned, his cold eyes locking with Jeff's.
Jeff immediately let go, cowering.
To ease up tensity, Rachel smiled: "Anny, come to mom. You're ill. You can't marry anyone when you're ill. I promise you no one will make you take the pills again, okay? If you come here now and be good, we won't punish you for hurting your sister."
Ann tilted her head: "But it's not what you said. You said if Anny marries hubby and makes hubby like Anny, Anny won't have to take pills again."
"What nonsense are you talking about?" Rachel could hardly keep the anger and panic out of her voice.
"It's true. Daddy says Eva doesn't want to be a widow, and..."
"Shut up!" Jeff growled.
Wasn't she supposed to be a fool? How could a fool remember things so clearly and talk so logically?
"They don't want hubby. Anny wants hubby. Hubby is good to Anny, and Anny'll be good to hubby. Anny protects hubby." Ann giggled and hugged Roy.
In a moment of shock, the Reeds couldn't think of anything to say.
Shawn snorted with anger: "A nice plan you got here."
"Mr Lewis, she's just a fool. She doesn't know what she's saying. This is a setup." Rachel said quickly.
"A setup? Are you telling me that a fool managed to trick the three of you? What do you take me for, a fool you can trick all you want?!" Shawn scowled with sarcasm.
"I..." Rachel was silent again.
Ann looked up at Roy, giggling: "Hubby, Anny doesn't want to hear arguing. Anny wants to watch TV."
Shawn was on the verge of lashing out when Anny turned on the TV.
"Mr Lewis..."Jeff was cut off by Ann, who was clapping her hands and exclaiming like a child: "Eva, Eva in the TV! Eva in the TV!"
Everyone in the room turned their eyes to the television.
#MR ROY LEWIS'S FIANCEE SLEEPING WITH MALE PROSTITUTE'S'#
There was a headline on the screen, along with some photos of Eva being naked with men.
"No. This is not true. It's not like that!" Eva stood before the television, trying in vain to block everyone's vision.
"Turn it off! Ann Reed, I warn you, turn it off!"
Ann asked with the remote control in her hand, looking confused: "Hubby, what is prostitute? Is it yummy? Can Anny have it?"
"ANN REED!" Eva screamed.
"Get out of here! All of you. You have one day to handle the press. If this news is still out there by tomorrow, I'll personally make sure the name Reed is not heard of in this country again." Shawn growled.
Jeff wanted to say something else, but Rachel stopped him.
"Mr Lewis, we will give you an answer. It seems Ann Reed's mental illness is already cured. If that is true, you need to watch your back. She must be harboring some ill purposes, pretending to be a fool so that she could stay in your family. I'm sure Mr Roy can see her through and know that she is not what she seems. We'll leave you to it, but please be careful of her." Rachel whispered to Shawn.
"Mr Roy, I want to marry you." Eva said between sobs.
"Hubby, can Eva marry hubby too? Anny and Eva both marry hubby. Eva is on TV. Eva must be good. Can hubby marry her too?" Ann asked, drawing everyone's attention back on this.
Shawn yelled: "Get out!"
The Reeds left, embarrased and defeated.
Ann was still watching TV when Shawn fetched the remote control and turned it off.
"Send her back to the Reeds. A fool can't be your wife." Shawn demanded.
"No." Roy said curtly.
