Maddox's POV
I drive in a random direction while Ian has his gloves on. He is inspecting the silver arrow head, trying to make sure it is the same one used by the hunting troops.
If it does belong to the hunting troops, then that means I successfully have a lead. I should just find out who is leading this or who is recruiting college students to hunt werewolves.
Is that why she was reading the fantasy novel earlier? To know more about werewolves? Now I wonder what must human authors write about werewolves. Not everything is a lie but some of it might be true. Because in the last few decades, few werewolves were mated to humans. And who knows which one of those revealed secrets.
I find a bar and we both walk in. We sit down at a booth and order a whole bottle of whiskey for ourselves.
"So, what do you think?" I ask Ian, pouring us two glasses of bourbon.
We both take a gulp and nod in appreciation. This really tastes good. I take a look at the label and I see its brother's bond. Why would someone name a whiskey brand based on their brother's bond?
I cannot see myself giving a beer factory to Ian and say it's a tribute. But this tastes good, so cancel what I said earlier.
"I think it's a hunter's arrow" Ian says and pulls out the arrow head again, using a couple of tissue papers as the barrier between his bare skin and the arrow.
He places the arrow on the tissue and passes it to me. I take another sip of my bourbon and see that it is indeed a hunter's arrow.
The silver tip, the residues of wolfsbane says a lot. But why does Zelda have this? Is she a part of the group or is she a part of the real werewolf hunter family?
"Any idea on why she has this?" I ask him.
"Maybe you should have an idea. You were the one saving her and dropping her at home" he says and I mentally groan.
Because I thought he would let it go. Apparently, Ian is just Ian. He is always up for gossip and when he knows something, he won't shut up.
I pour myself another glass of the bourbon and some for Ian too. We both clink our glasses and gulp it all down, but the smirk on Ian's face is still there.
"Okay. So maybe I was a little interested in her" I say and he finally nods with a smile.
"Yeah. Thought so" he says and I roll my eyes.
"On the remembrance day. I just drove around, saw her going to a party. And when I was about to drive away, I heard her voice. She sounded uncomfortable. Went in to check and a bastard was taking advantage of her drunk state" I say taking another sip of bourbon and grabbing a cheese cracker.
"So you beat the s**t out of that boy?" Ian asks and I nod.
"He showed up with multiple bruises today and I wondered what happened. Because I know when a super strong creature beats someone" Ian says and we clink our glasses again.
We go ahead and order food because slowly we are starting to get hungry. Alcohol doesn't really have much effect on werewolves. We have crazy tonnes of capacity for all of this.
Ian and I go ahead and talk about everything that is happening with our lives. Ian seems pretty content with what he is doing. I cannot help but wonder if this is why he doesn't want to take the Alpha title.
"Kelsie is the typical rude Luna we usually hear about," Ian says again.
"As much as I love my sister, I must agree on that" I say with a smile, recalling the time when she made Omegas clean the already clean pack house. Just on the remembrance day.
"She was a sweet girl. Where did things go wrong?" Ian asks.
"So many things went wrong after the war, Ian. We are just not ready to face. Kelsie lost her mother. But the same incident prompted her two big brothers to spoil the heck out of her. Now she is just a spoiled brat" I say.
"Makes sense. Not everyone's life is the same after the war" he says and I nod this time.
I pay the bill after Ian and I finish everything and we both hop into my car again. Ian shoves the arrow head in the dashboard.
"By the way, where is your car?" I ask him.
"It's fine. I did not feel like driving today" he says and I look at him.
"Is everything okay, brother?" I ask him.
"If something is not okay, then you would be the first one to know brother" Ian says and I keep driving.
I keep thinking about Zelda. Why does she have this in her bag? Not the full arrow too. Just the head. Is it because it is easy to carry?
I take a turn to the woods and keep driving again. Cheers to the girl I have shown interest in after a really long time. If she turns out to be the huntress herself, it doesn't matter if I am interested in her or not. I would kill her for my people.
Something hit the car tire, followed by a sound and my car jerked to a stop. Ian and I sit silently and look around.
I spotted an arrow again, flying towards the car window and my first instinct was to push Ian back. Thank heavens for my werewolf quick reflexes, I hit the button to roll down my windows and catch the arrow bare handed.
I get down and throw the arrow into the same direction it came from. Ajax gives me his werewolf eyesight and I take a look around.
I see a movement behind the trees. Another arrow comes through that direction and this time, I break that into two pieces and throw both of them with force.
One half of the arrow pierced through the tree trunk and it did not pierce through him of course, but his groan made it known that he was hurt.
So I walked towards the tree trunk to grab him but he ran away. It's a boy. Whoever it is cannot be more than twenty two years old.
I walk back to the car to see Ian already working on replacing the tire.
"Did you really have to roll down the windows and hold that with bare hands?" Ian asks as he continues changing because my hands burn like hell right now.
"I couldn't watch that hunter break my car windows with the arrow" I say leaning over the car.
"Seriously, Maddox? Your car is more important than your life?" Ian asks me in disappointment but he is not surprised.
I don't say anything about that. Of course my car is important to me. I wouldn't say that out loud but that exactly is the thing. I might think Zelda is interesting, but I would ask her to get down if she is making it messy.
Yes. My car is my prized possession. It took me lots of savings to buy this BMW. There is no way in hell I am letting a werewolf hunter or a girl ruin even a little bit of it.
I wait for Ian to finish changing while Ajax starts working on the healing process. I wish for an earthquake to rise and take all the silver. This s**t burns like crazy.
Ian gets done in a few minutes and he starts driving this time. I sit in the passenger seat and look up at the moon through the window. The Crescent shaped Goddess is looking down on us and still not doing anything about everything the werewolf race is facing right now.
"What are we going to do about this then? Looks like someone knows you are a werewolf" Ian says.
"Yeah. I figured that out. And I have my suspicions" I say thinking of Zelda.
I am not saying she must be behind all of this. But definitely something is always going wrong whenever she is around. Today, the silver arrow falling and flying out of her bag? That is too much to process.
Ian drives slow and steady and we reach the pack by midnight. And by the time we reached the pack, Lucia was waiting for me with Russel in her arms.
"Good evening, Alpha" she bows but I stop her from doing so. She has a kid in her arms who is almost falling asleep on his mom's shoulder.
"A reply from Edgar that came in a few hours ago" she says and gives me a piece of folded paper.
I take that from her hands and look at Russel, then at her.
"What does your mate do, Lucia?" I ask her and she just gives out a small smile instead of saying anything.
I unfold the letter and it says...
Stop being so noisy, Maddox. I see you want to meet me. Okay fine, I will. Next Sunday at eight pm at Blue Note. If you don't know what it is, that's a jazz pub. Bring a girl because they don't allow single men. We'll talk about anything over drinks. Now that you got what you want.. stop writing me letters. Feels like rom com and I'm straight.
I fold the paper with a smile. Alright if this man is the Vampire King, then I can deal with him. He seems fun. And I need to bring a girl? Lucia has her toddler she needs to take care of. Kelsie isn't here. Krystal went back to her pack. And I don't talk with any other girls.
Wow that leaves me with either Zelda or Ophelia. Maybe I can figure out about how Zelda has the silver arrow head in her bag too. Two projects at one time.
But it might sound like I'm going to ask her out on a date. f**k it, if she thinks that then so be it.
Date it is.
