CHAPTER - 5
Maddox's POV
"I am so sorry for your loss, Alpha Monroe" I frown at an Alpha sitting here in my office, before me.
"I agree, the werewolf hunters are outnumbering us currently. But I will come up with a quick solution. We don't have any witch protection anymore. So I'll see any other possible way to get a grip on this" I say and he nods.
"Again, I am deeply sorry for the loss. Losing twenty two pack members in one day to werewolf hunters is a huge disaster on my part" I say.
Alpha Monroe and I chat for a bit more until it is time for him to leave. He bows to me and reminds me about the werewolf hunters issue again, and leaves without turning around.
I fall on the chair and stare at the ceiling. It had been five years! I don't know where these werewolf hunters are coming from. I have no idea how they are only growing more with each passing day. I know I should put an end to this but I am trying to form a better ally other than the witches.
I call Lucia and she comes to my cabin half an hour later. I don't blame her somehow. Her life with a toddler is already messy. Beta duties are just an addition to her already messy life. I ask her to sit and she does.
"What do you think? Can we get a reply from The Vampire King?" I ask her.
"Alpha?" She asks and I just stare at her, waiting for her to finally process what I am trying to ask her.
She takes approximately two minutes to switch back into the beta mode and once she does, she gets what I was asking her.
"The Vampire goes to lots of parties in the evening. Most of the time alone. Turns out he does not want to grab any attention" she says and I narrow my eyes.
"Because just a year ago, The Vampire Prince took over and he is the new king" Lucia says again and I nod. I lean back into the chair, deep in thought.
"So you're telling me that Edgar is now The Vampire King?" I ask Lucia and she nods.
"No wonder he hasn't been replying to any of the messages or the messengers" I whisper to myself.
"Can you ask someone to find a few parties he usually attends? I really have an important business to deal with" I say and she bows to me before she leaves.
Edgar is the new vampire king. How am I that unaware about it? I groan recalling all of the letters I sent with his father's name on it and not his. Maybe that is why he did not respond.
I definitely need a new tactic. I need to meet him instead of sending him another message.
I walk to the pack house for lunch. I didn't even have my breakfast and I am starving. It is Monday today and Ian finally went to college in the morning.
Weekends are terrible with him around. He is always talking about that economics s**t while I sit there trying my best to focus on at least one word. Eventually, he gets the point that talking to me is equivalent to talking to a wall. So he gives up and leaves.
I sit at the dining table, all alone. And Chloe serves me spaghetti and meatballs. I look around trying to find dad but he is not here.
"Where is dad?" I ask Chloe.
"I don't know, Alpha. He wasn't here for breakfast either, `` she says with a bow and leaves.
I eat my food all alone. And for the first time I realized that without my dad, I indeed feel alone. I might act grumpy at him all day and ignore him every single minute.. At the end of the day when he is not by my side, I miss him.
I stand up halfway through the lunch and wash my hands. I walk to his room and he is sitting with a book in his hand.
"Dad?" I call him and he looks at me.
Once he notices me, he smiles at me and makes room for me to sit by his side. But I don't. I stand and look at him trying to ask what he is doing here instead of coming out.
"I have heard you didn't have your breakfast too" I say and he glances at the clock.
"I did not know I had passed that much time. This book kept me busy" he says with a silly smile, a smile so contagious that I am trying hard not to break into a smile.
"It's noon, dad" I say and he nods.
I nod at him and turn around to walk out, but he calls me, making me stop walking. I don't turn around, but I just stop walking and wait for him to tell me what he wants to say.
"Why won't you talk to me?" He asks and I turn around.
"Well, I am talking to you" I say with a shrug but he finally closes the book and stands up from the bed.
"Not this. I am talking about my eight year old son, Maddox. I was his best friend" dad says and I try my best not to recall those times. I keep a straight face as I look at him.
"When did we drift apart, Maddox?" He asks me and I don't know how to answer that.
I just stood silently for what felt like a couple of minutes. Dad is just watching me. I take a step back, turn around and walk out of his room.
I walk out of the pack house and to my office again. I miss Kelsie but she is the Luna to another pack. She had to leave the next day of the remembrance day. I barely talked to her this time.
So I take my car and drive to Ian's college. Hopefully we can drive to some other place and have some drinks to have some brother time. I might act like I want to punch Ian at all the times, but in all honesty he is currently the only person who is keeping me sane.
Without Ian and Kelsie, I am damn sure I would have gone mad a few years back already. Ian got trained to become an Alpha. But I am not sure what is stopping him from taking the responsibility already.
He says he wants me to completely take up the king's responsibility and only then he can take up the Alpha title. But I believe there must be a deeper reason for him to act like that.
I park my car in the visitor's parking lot and try mindlinking my brother. But he is in his class, so he might have blocked it before he entered. Mindlinking fogs our eyes a little and that doesn't happen to humans.
So witnessing such a thing would only put us in danger further. I sigh and press the radio on, listening to the songs I have never heard before. I do watch movies here and there but songs, I don't have much time in my hands for that.
I close my eyes for a while, and I see Deborah again. I smile at the imagination and I don't open my eyes for a while. I sink deep into my imagination until Ajax knocks me out of it and opens all the mindlinks.
"What's with the noise, brother?" Ian asks me and I groan, sitting straight.
"Yeah. I'm at your college campus. Meet me at the visitor's parking lot once you're done" I tell him.
"Is everything fine or shall I have a heads-up and start running right now?" He asks me and I smile at that.
"Heads-up.. we are running together to a different place" I say and he closes the mindlink.
And I wait for Ian to come out already. I look around to see if I find something interesting. Suddenly, I regret not bringing a study file at least. I could have done something productive meanwhile.
Then, I see her. Her blonde hair dancing with the wind. She puts all of that into a ponytail and looks around. And then sits on the platform with a book in her hand.
It is not a textbook but a novel. Maybe a fantasy one. I wonder how she might feel if I say that werewolves are real.
I notice her facial expressions. She is smiling at a sentence, and laughs at others. A frown easily makes its way to her face and it's easier for her to start crying too. I don't know for how long she is there and I have been watching her, but I can sense it's been quite a while because she must have read at least thirty pages.
"Where are you exactly?" Ian asks me.
"Towards gate 5" I say and close the mindlink again. But he opens it, making me feel irritated just for a moment.
"Okay. I did not bring my car so I'm coming to you" he says.
He did not bring his car? Then how did he really come here? Who must have dropped him? I was busy with the meeting with Alpha Monroe all morning, so I don't really know how Ian left.
I could have given him a ride if he wanted morning too. Alpha duties, King duties.. all aside for my brother.
I see Ian walking towards the parking lot. I sit straight but Zelda also notices him and stands up. She dusts off her black jeans as she smiles and talks to him.
She opens her bag and pulls out a book and shows him. Ian starts talking and he also looks like he is explaining something to her. I wait for a couple of minutes and get out of the car.
I walk towards them stretching myself up because I've been sitting in the car for quite a while now. Zelda notices me first and then Ian.
Zelda rolls her eyes at me and I see Ophelia walking towards us and standing beside Zelda. She looks at me and her sister, confusion evident in her face.
"I knew it" she says and I look at her in confusion.
"You want my number, don't you?" She asks and I am now intrigued. Why would she think so?
"Zelda what's happening?" Ophelia asks.
Zelda just looks at me and shakes her head, looks at me up and down and sighs.
"You look like you could have been already married. Why are you here? Is it my number or Ophelia's?" She asks and I scoff at that.
"Zelda!" Ophelia almost yells.
Ian clears his throat and I want to tell him about what happened, but Zelda beats me to it again.
"Mr. Bohen, this man here rescued Ophelia and I a couple days ago. He got us out of a party where it went bad with me and my sister. He dropped us off again the next morning" she says and Ian looks at me.
I know his face right now. He is trying hard not to smirk and I slightly shake my head at him.
"As usual, just like any other man. He now wants to take advantage of his pinch of kindness he showered that night. He either wants my number or my sister's" she says and then looks at me again.
"So you're stalking us too? You know we go to this college?" She asks and I try opening my mouth to tell her something.
And Ian beats me to it this time. What's with people not letting me talk today?
"So, Zelda and Ophelia.. meet Maddox Bohen" he says and stands beside me.
Zelda's jaw almost hits the floor and Ophelia is too shocked to say anything. I just shrug without saying anything.
"Maddox Bohen.. as in... Your name, Mr. Bohen?" Ophelia asks.
"Yes. He is my brother and here to pick me up" Ian says and I nod.
"I'm... I am so sorry. Oh no! This is embarrassing now" Zelda finally says and Ophelia starts laughing actually.
I just shrug as Ian places his arm around my shoulder.
"And I can assure you, Miss Clarke, he is indeed a gentleman who wouldn't expect his pinch of kindness back" Ian says again and he turns around making me turn around too.
"But I am so sorry. I was so rude for no reason. Really sorry" Zelda says and I turn around again.
"It's okay. Maybe next time, ask people what they want and then go ahead with your motivational speech" I say and she doesn't say anything because she is already embarrassed about it earlier.
"Have a good evening, Mr. Bohen and Maddox. We shall leave now" Ophelia says and Zelda lazily shoves her books back in her bag and zips it up halfway before swinging it around her shoulder.
Something hits my arm and burns. Silver. I quickly look at the object on the ground and bend to grab it.
I take a close look and Ian does too.
It's a silver arrow with a wooden base. Is she one of the hunters group?
