I drove my carriage straight to the school and stopped at a fairly close distance from the front gates. Throughout the ride, I tried to forget what the brat had said earlier. I tried not to get his dumb attitude get to me.
"Okay you two, be good until I get back." I patted my horses and walked towards the gates. School was over about ten minutes ago so there were still children who lingered around. Some waiting for their friends and others waiting for their parents or an adult to come get them.
Ever since the attacks, parents don't allow their children to walk home. No matter how close their houses were from the school.
I slowly walked through the gates, hoping to see the teacher.
Oziel! Alpin! Stop running towards the mud! You two, come over here this instant!"
"But it's calling us!!" The dark haired boy, not older than 8 yelled out to his pitiful teacher who couldn't control them.
Ten seconds later he was covered in mud. His friends laughed so hard until he too, slipped and fell face first in the mud.
"Ohh, you two are going to get a beating now!" She rushed over to the boys to help them. I too laughed until I was satisfied. Only then did I go and help them.
I ran a few meters until I reached one of the boys, pulling him up to his feet. He simply looked at me and giggled.
"You're in a lot of trouble kid."
"I know." He laughed and took of running with his companion who also managed to slip away from Lilian's grasp. Like literally. Blame the mud.
"Kyle? What are you doing here?" She asked surprised. She had mud on her hands and some of them managed to get on her forehead. Using my sleeve, I wiped it off for her.
She thanked me politely but I surely didn't expect her to look at her shoes and hide her blush.
"That was something." I looked over at Oziel and Alpin. They were still running around but playing with sticks this time.
"Errgh those two have the energy of vampires." She shook her head. I laughed at the boys and then turned towards Lilian.
"How is your grandfather?"
"He's not that good but he will get better. He'll be okay Kyle and I have you to thank for that. I have no idea what I would have done if I hadn't ran into you."
"You probably would have ran into someone else and managed to get the help you need." I gave her a playful grin making her turn away for a moment. She nervously tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear.
Was I making her nervous?
"Kyle I don't think I could have ran into anyone better. You and your friend saved the lives of three men. I could never repay the two of you." She looked me in the eye as she spoke. I could see how grateful she was.
"Hmmmmm, you sure about that?" I asked with a grin. She raised a brow and looked at me.
"Of course I will never be able to repay you." She stated once more.
"You could actually. If you really want to."
"Alright then. Tell me." I looked into her pretty grey eyes with that sparkle in them. I saw how her wavy blonde hair cascaded down her left shoulder as she waited for my answer.
"Go out with me." I said. She instantly took a small step back which made me frown a little.
"I don't think-"
"You won't even give me a chance? At least let's try it and then let me know why you don't like me."
"Hey I never said I didn't like you!" Realizing the words which flew out, she slapped her hand over her mouth and stared at me wide eyes.
A small smile made its way to my lips before I frowned again.
"Then what's the problem?" I slowly asked, taking a step closer to her. She looked down and shook her head.
"It's not you......it's them. Vampires."
"If you're worried about the prince-"
"Not just the prince. Vampires in general. They're always causing some sort of problem with us. I....I prefer to stay away from them completely." She whispered the last part. I knew damn well it was something personal and she wasn't giving me the real, full reason for her fear.
"But if you go out with me, you're going out with me." I raised a brow.
"I said I prefer to stay away from vampires. And you work for the Royal Pure Bloods! We'll be constantly watched and what if they decide that you're not doing your job well because of me? What if-"
"Whoaaa whoa whoa. Hold up. What the hell are you blabbering about? They're not what they used to be."
"Tell that to my grandfather or those men who lost their lives." She stared up at me. I sighed to myself.
"Look I don't know about the vampires who are attacking the villagers. I just know that they're going against the laws our king has introduced to Red Kingdom. The one thing I'm certain, a hundred percent sure of, is that Prince Timothy is the nicest pure blood that's ever going to live. He compassionate and kind. He's only going to be thirteen.
It's not fair to assume the kid is all evil. I think you of all people should know that right?"
"It's not all about him Kyle. You know what I mean."
"You're weary of him and I understand that. That is why I'm telling you that he's just like any other kid in this school. A little bratty but nothing I can't handle." I smiled at her.
"Look, I-"
"Hey, I understand your fear of vampires in a much deeper level you know. I really do. So if you don't want to do this then I am not going to force you." I had to say it. My family was wiped out by blood suckers. I don't know what Lilian has been through but it doesn't seem very nice. So if she wants to stay away, she should be able to.
I smiled at her when she kept looking at me. Why was she staring into my f*****g soul?!
"Um.....is there?"
"Fine." She blurted out.
"What?"
"I'll give us a chance. You're right, if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. At least we'll know." She sighed and then looked up at me with a tight smile. "So that's it then. Meet me tomorrow after school Mr. Kyle Robinson." And with that, she walked towards the two boys who got into a mud fight.
What just happened?

The Next Day, After Work.
"For the 100th time Tim. I'm just going to spend some time with her! I'm not a love sick puppy! When have I ever been one anyway?!" We continued to argue. I had just finished sorting out the letters. Of course I was done earlier than most of the other workers like yesterday. And like yesterday, I found the little brat waiting near my carriage as I walked towards it.
"You really want to know the answer to that question?" He raised a brow at me. I could almost feel my blood boil so I pointed a finger at him.
"I know hitting you would be a death sentence but that doesn't mean I wouldn't attempt it." He looked at my face and simply laughed.
"Oh human. You're falling way too fast for that human girl. It's a break up just waiting to happen. Don't come crying to me when she breaks your sensitive little heart." He smirked at my shocked face.
"We're not dating yet! We're just going to meet up and talk! What do you have against this?!"
"What do I have against it? You think I'm concerned? No I simply think you're a magnet for trouble and pain so I'm just giving some advice." He smiled at me confidently. Oh how I hated him that moment. How I wished I could slap that smile off his stupid face.
"Ooohh I can almost feel the heat of your anger human. I'll forgive it because obviously you're smitten by the girl. You will have much to learn." He brushed off the sleeve of his coat and turned around to leave while I stood there completely speechless.
I grumbled to myself and drove to the school. All the way I complained to Sorin and Selene. They grunted and neighed in response so I felt so much better as I arrived a few meters away from the school gates.
I waited on my carriage until the school compound was children free. Then I spotted the teacher waiting at the entrance.
Clicking my tongue, I urged the horses to move closer to her.
"Kyle." She nodded at me making me smile widely at her. She wore a simple light yellow dress with sleeves that came up to her elbows. The lovely dress complimented her fair skin. Her black shoes were flat and simple, probably suitable for all the running around. Her lovely blonde hair was braided to the side. She had that same sparkle in her eyes that made my heart beat faster.
"Why are you staring at me like that?" She asked. I shook myself out of my thoughts and helped her up the carriage.
"So where are we going?" I asked her.
"You're asking me?" She laughed freely. Her rosy cheeks made her look all the more prettier. "I thought you had everything planned out Kyle. This is the first time I've ever heard a question like that. On a first date." She giggled.
She said date!
"I've been everywhere so I figured it would be easier if you chose." I shrugged.
"Well, I'm very hungry so how about lunch in the town. We'll see from there." She turned to me.
"Sounds good to me Miss Vidarr."
~~~~~~~~~~~
We stopped at a small, charming eatery that sold home cooked meals. I knew the people who ran this place. Ustinya and Aldrich Crius, husband and wife.
"Kyle Robins? Without the young pure blood? I'll be damned." The woman greeted me with a laugh. I smiled sheepishly as she led us to a table for two. She straightened up and was a little surprised as she glanced over at Lilian. She didn't expect me to come with someone else.
"My, my I do like the replacement." She winked at Lilian.
"Ustinya, this is Lilian Vidarr, Lilian meet Ustinya. This beautiful woman owns this place." Lilian shook hands with Ustinya and they made small talk.
"Miss Vidarr? The famous teacher who's strong enough to put up with all those rascals?" Ustinya chuckled.
"Me and a few others." She said smiled back.
"Hmmm, we mostly hear the name Vidarr."
"Then that must be my grandfather. He too educated a lot of little rascals." She quoted and laughed.
"I see. He's a good man. Now what would the two of you like?"
~~~~~~~~
"You have to finish that gravy Vidarr." I said, looking at the woman before me.
"I remember how I preferred you calling me that, now I just don't like it." She mumbled looking at me. "I did tell you my name."
"I'll try but the surname kinda stuck. You have yourself to blame." I chuckled while she made herself finish her food.
"This is a huge portion." She grunted. She ordered meat gravy with some rice while I ordered meat and cheese. Ustinya thought it would be nice to serve us extra but Lilian was struggling to finish. I just sat there and stared at her funny face.
"Are you laughing at me?"
"You look hilarious trying to stuff that rice in your mouth." She glared at me but said nothing until she finished her meal.
"Wow you did it." I lightly applauded.
"Hooray for me." She winced.
And then she burped. Loudly.
We both slapped our hands over our mouth for very different reasons. I did it so I wouldn't burst out laughing and she did it because she was appalled by what happened.
I didn't last long. Obviously.
Seconds later I was laughing my lungs out while she sat there staring at me not knowing what to do. And that made me laugh harder.
"You can burp louder than me!" I wheezed out. Her eyes turned to slits as she stared at me.
"You will not mention this to anyone." She whispered out. She still couldn't believe what she did and that made it a lot more funnier.
"Okay, okay I'm done." I said after a long satisfying laughter. She buried her face in her hands and groaned.
"That was horrifying." She muttered.
"That made my day." I chirped. Then I walked up to the counter to pay for our meals. "Come on Vidarr, I mean Lilian." I grinned and beckoned for her to leave the eatery. "Where to next?" I looked towards her."
She looked at me nervously obviously still thinking about that little incident.
"If you keep thinking about that burp, I will keep remembering it and I won't stop laughing." I warned her.
Lilian closed her eyes, took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. Then she looked at me and nodded.
"That's how you calm yourself?"
"Yes, Kyle. Now, I too wish to forget what I did back there."
"I won't." I scoffed. She glared at me but I saw the playfulness in her eyes.
"How about we just walk along these shops, relax and talk? It's been a very long time since I just lazily walked around and eased my mind." She looked up at me with a soft smile playing on her lips.
"Okay." I agreed while I offered her my hand. Lilian placed her smaller hand in mine and we started our stroll.
"Is it too boring for you?" She suddenly looked up at me after ten minutes.
"Actually no. I don't mind aimlessly walking around this place for the millionth time." She nudged my shoulder and chuckled.
Along the way, we saw the same small shops and the slow growing businesses. It was quite a lovely day. Since school was over, there were a lot of children playing. They would get scolded every once in while by those arrogant castle guards but these children were all too used to it.
This is what vampires like Jerome couldn't handle. Humans becoming bolder, humans achieving their freedom. They were so used to us humans being the oppressed, they fear the many possibilities if the roles were changed or even better, reversed. Why couldn't they understand that we could live together in peace? I guess that was simply too boring.
"What's going on in that head of yours?" Lilian's voice brought me back.
"I want this to last." I said looking around Red Kingdom Town.
"Me too Kyle. I always believed that the changes our king brought to Red Kingdom was too good to be true. I always believed that someday, he won't be able to take the pressure and all this will return to the way it once was." I looked at her in all seriousness. After sighing to herself, she slowly turned to me.
"And then there's you. Having so much faith in our king. Believing that he will wipe out every evil in our kingdom. Your faith might be naive but it's hard to just ignore. You have such confidence in him, such trust. Where does it all come from Kyle?"
"I know he's not a monster. I know he doesn't resemble all the horrors made by the Isoldrian bloodline. I worked for him for quite a while. I understand that he really wants change."
"You one hundred percent believe that? That we have a good Isoldrian as our king?" Lilian stepped closer to me and looked into my eyes with her sparkling grey eyes. She looked hopeful.
"Yes I do Lilian. He's probably struggling but he still wants to make things better. He's good for us you know." She stepped back and nodded. She wasn't completely onboard but she seemed to understand what I said.
"I believe you have a good heart Kyle." She smiled at me.
That is how our day went. We talked a little more and got to know each other. I told her I lost my family years ago and that I have three non-biological siblings. She told me she too had a complete family once and that was all she said.
Fortunately we stopped there. It was difficult for her to open up about loss and I didn't want to say too much about my crazy family yet. That would be throwing a grenade on her.
So we talked about other things like our interests, hobbies, embarrassing moments, and so on. It was the most fun I've had in quite a while. She was a breath of fresh air and she was a good listener.
~~~~~~
"You know, I actually had a great time Kyle. I didn't think I would." She tucked a strand of lose hair behind her ear and looked up at me.
"Me too. I would love to do this again some day."
"Me too." She smiled at me with those enchanting eyes. They sparkled even more under the moonlight.
"You're beautiful Lilian." I blurted out in a soft whisper. She blushed and looked away.
"And you're very charming. Good night Kyle. Thanks for the ride home." She said and stepped closer to me. I didn't move because I didn't expect her to come close. She slowly reached up and kissed my cheek while I just stood there and stared at her like a confused kid.
Man up Kyle. You're twenty!
Before I could say or do anything, Lilian turned around and entered her house without looking back, leaving me in a daze.
I sighed as I happily walked towards my carriage, knowing the lovely Miss Vidarr was watching from her window.
