A week later.
Kyle's POV
"I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Should I just let it go?" I asked exasperated. I was currently sitting on the foyer while India spent time with the three horses including Rexamus. Sorin and Selene got along with the much bigger horse. They seemed to follow whatever he did.
"Oh Kyle. Don't let it get to you. You must understand that the girl is human living in Red Kingdom. We don't know what she's been through."
"She's not letting me know! One moment she's amused and the next she inside her shell again.
"She seems interesting. What's her name again?"
"I call her Miss Vidarr. She hasn't told me her name yet so I'm guessing she wants to maintain a certain distance. Even though I told her mine. Which isn't fair!!" India just laughed at my frustration.
"Hmm, she is interesting. Don't give up too soon. It's just more than a week since you've met her. Give it time."
"I bet Bessie would give me a completely different advice. She'd tell me to drop this foolishness and go after someone else. Exactly like Tim."
"Kyle you know how Beth thinks! She's wary of anyone that's too close to you! Especially women."
"Speaking of pursuing people, how's that general?"
"Hasn't called. And no letters of course."
"I honestly thought you were going to get married after the engagement."
"We need time for ourselves Kyle. I'm still trying to open up a school and Gabriel is busy with the army. We are in no position to raise a family now. I'm afraid marriage is going to have to wait."
"For how long? It's been what? Almost two years?"
"Almost. I'm not worried though, we still have time." India said without a doubt. Rexamus neighed and nudged her once she stopped combing his hair. "Oh, you big, spoilt stallion." She playfully said while she continued to comb his raven black hair.
"Any updates on the school?"
"Nope. But I'm not going to give up. The king will allow it. He has to...."
"But?" I slowly asked, knowing she had more to say.
"I'm willing to be patient. After you told me about the Lady Tallulah and the vampires that attacked you, I'm afraid Zenas is hiding something big. Maybe it isn't the right time for the school." India shrugged but I could see the disappointment in her eyes.
"You'll get to open your school, I promise." I said genuinely. I simply knew that the vampire king will solve this issue. He is smart and powerful. Plus, he comes from a powerful family too. I just hope he doesn't deal with the matter alone.
"We have time Kyle. Don't worry so much. Do you really like this Miss Vidarr?" She brightened up after sensing the heavy silence between the two of us.
"Sort of."
"Why?"
"Why? What do you mean?"
"Why do you like her?"
"She's intriguing. She's very brave and outspoken India. It just changed once she saw the little brat. She passionate and hardworking too. She really takes her job seriously and I've seen the way she treats the children. She loves them. These things make her even more attractive." I sighed and threw lazily threw a small stone at a distance.
"She's a puzzle. I know there's a huge chance she likes me too but it's.... something's stopping her."
"Hmmm, give her time. Maybe a few days. Then try again. At least ask her why she thinks it wouldn't work out."
"Really?"
"That's the best advice this witch can give you."
"Don't you have a love potion or something?"
"Kyle!"
"What?! It's not entirely unreasonable!"
"It is you dumbass! You can't just use magic on her feelings!"
"So it's a possibility? Whoa, maybe I'll go ask another witch."
"You're a magnet for trouble you know that?"
"Pffftt. Whatever."
"Why don't you spend sometime with yourself. Go take a walk Kyle or just rest for today. I just think it would be good for you to meet people."
"I meet people everyday India. Are you forgetting what my job actually entails?"
"Right. What I'm trying to say is that, you need time for yourself. Spend the day how you want. Do what you want Kyle. Just try to get all this worry out of your mind. At least for the next few days."
"Fine." I grumbled. I knew she was right. Like always.
Once we had our lunch together, I decided to take a stroll through the streets of Red Kingdom village. Certain stalls in the market square were still open so there were people here and there.
I was still getting used to the huge change Zenas has brought to Red Kingdom. There was less fear, less suffering.
I looked to my right at all the small shops that were coming up. Soon, this place was going to be much livelier. Maybe one day-
"Ouch! Damn it!" The force of a hard blow sent me falling on the rough ground. I gripped my left arm the second I felt a sharp pain go through it.
"I'm so so sorry!"
Wait a minute. I know that voice.
"Is this a form of revenge Miss Vidarr?!" I looked up at her as I was still on the ground.
"No no sir! I mean Kyle."
"Errgh!" I grumbled and stood up. After brushing the dirt off my clothes I looked up to see her still standing there looking distraught.
"This is a question you should be asking me but then....are you okay?" I asked her. "Why were you running like a mad woman?"
"No, no I'm not okay. My grandfather, he..he was attacked," her eyes welled up while her hands trembled. Looking closely, I saw that there was blood on her fingers and even the front of her dress was stained with blood.
I immediately held her shoulders and looked into her eyes.
"What do you need?"
"A healer. Anyone at all. Please help me Kyle." Her cheeks were wet with tears now but she somehow remained firm. Without wasting time, I grabbed her hand and we raced to India's house.
"My grandfather wasn't the only one who got hurt!" She rasped as we kept running.
"What?"
"Five men are badly hurt Kyle. Two of them, I don't think they'll make it." She sniffed.
I kept quiet until we reached India's house. There was nothing I could say to calm her so I knocked on India's door until I heard her scolding me from the inside.
"You're going to break my door Kyle!!" She stopped the moment she noticed the other visitor beside me.
"Ahhh, you must be-"
"Not now India. She needs help. Desperately."
~~~~~~~~~~
"I'm sorry I couldn't save two of his friends." India apologized to Miss Vidarr.
"You just saved three lives. You already did so much. I understand that their wounds were too great."
When we came to her grandfather's shed, there were five men badly hurt with cuts and deep wounds. They were made to lie on some blankets while Miss Vidarr had tried to clean their wounds as best she could. Before seeking our help.
India managed to save her grandfather who was actually Mr. Rhysand the principal, and his two companions. She mixed a few potions together and poured it on their wounds. Then she laid her hands over the wounds covered with the potions and whispered inaudibly. Soon after, her eyes held a soft glow as she healed the victims.
Sadly, she couldn't save all of them. Two men were lost.
"What the f**k happened to them?" I muttered.
"Maybe they were attacked by bandits? Thieves." Miss Vidarr guessed.
"No." India said gravely. "These wounds were inflicted by vampires. It's quite obvious if you observe the fatal scratches."
"Vampires? Unless they are castle guards, they are not allowed to attack humans like this. Even during the reign of King Caelestinus!" I objected.
"These men aren't the only ones. This has happened before." The teacher sniffled while she caressed her grandfather's cheek.
"What are you saying?" India moved closer to Vidarr.
"Two days ago a house maid was attacked in the dead of night. She had a hard blow to her head but she survived. A week ago, two blacksmiths. One of them was badly beaten and the other is still missing. I don't think the man will return."
"How are these attacks not known?" India asked getting angrier by the second.
"No one is taking it seriously. We only know because the victims live in the same area as us. It's getting worse. This is the first attack that has happened in broad daylight." Miss Vidarr explained as she controlled her sobs.
"They're getting bolder." I muttered to myself. "Did anyone complain to the guards?"
"We did. They just brushed it off and said the victims were attacked by thieves or bandits. They blamed us for not being careful enough." Vidarr's tone became bitter. "Why would any of the guards care anyway?" She bit back.
"They would if they knew these attacks were done by vampires." India said.
"They would just cover for the vampires!" The teacher said.
"They're going against the King, Miss Vidarr. He didn't introduce new laws for humans to suffer like this. India and I will try to bring this matter to King Zenas as soon as possible."
"You speak as if it's so easy for you to talk to him." She was puzzled at what I said.
"This is important, I'm sure he'll hear us out-"
"Careful Kyle. Please." She suddenly blurted out, her eyes filled with worry. "They can hurt you and no one can say anything."
"We'll be careful." I tried to assure her as she sat by her grandfather.
Just as we got up to leave, three other women rushed into the shed to see the men. They brought more cloth and bandages along with some ointments.
"Will you be alright?" India asked one of the women who was attending to the dead men. The woman looked up at India with swollen eyes and merely nodded. I quickly went to India and urged her to follow me to the castle.
"Take care of yourself Miss Vidarr." I said slowly, looking towards the blonde haired woman. She averted her gaze from her weak grandfather and looked at me.
"It's Lilian. My name is Lilian." She said softly.
~~~~~~~~~~
At the castle
"Isn't it your day off human? Miss me already?" Tim came bouncing down the giant stairwell.
"Ewww no. We need to speak to the King. It's an urgent matter Tim." I stared the little brat down. I hated the fact that he was growing taller. He was almost thirteen now. A soon to be teenager. The worst part of it was the possibility of me never being able to stare him down again.
"He's in the middle of an important meeting but it'll end soon. Tell me what's this about human?"
"Remember when I got attacked-"
"You're always being attacked. Be more specific please." He cut me off while rolling his eyes. India snorted but she kept quiet after I hit her with a glare.
"If you would just put that vampiric hearing to good use and stop interrupting me, I'll be able to finish my sentence!!" I growled out taking a few steps towards the annoying child.
"Okay, okay."
"The attack during our trip. Remember Jerome and his two buddies? Their warning?" Tim narrowed his eyes at me, becoming serious. He will definitely pay heed to whatever we had to say.
So India and I told him about the attacks which has been going on in the village.
He then walked with us towards the King's office.
"He'll listen to us right?" India whispered to me. Tim looked over his shoulder as she spoke.
"You can lead him to the survivors. That would be proof enough and as king, he'll have to do something about this."
"Thank you, my prince." India said genuinely.
Tim nodded and led us to the heavy wooden doors.
"I don't hear anything so I assume the meeting has ended." Tim said before pushing the doors open without knocking.
"Timothy! You can't just walk in here like this!" The king scolded him. Zenas' voice was filled with a dangerous fury. He was always angry these days.
"They have pressing issues to discuss with you Zenas. Hear them out please."
Silence.
"I said please you know." Tim tried again.
The king simply grunted and beckoned for us to walk in.
"Kyle, India, if this is about that damn school again.."
"It's not Your Majesty." India cut him off with a slight irritation. "We've come to talk about some attacks that has been going on in Red Kingdom." She added quickly after realizing the use of her tone.
"I'll let that tone slide, India." Zenas stared her down, with a lopsided grin that only made us uncomfortable. "Now what kind of attacks?"
My friend quickly cleared her throat before explaining everything we had learnt today.
"The vampire Jerome, he warned me about this. I bet this is related."
"How many attacks so far."
"I believe this is the third Your Majesty." India said regrettably.
We were them consumed with an awkward silence. Zenas just sat down and said nothing. He simply stared at the papers on his desk with a faraway look in his eyes.
"Zenas, are you alright?" Tim suddenly spoke up, breaking the silence.
"I am. Leave me." He commanded, leaving no room for arguments.
~~~~~~~~~
"What the hell was that?!" I asked feeling annoyed with the King's attitude.
"Kyle shut up." The witch pinched my ear and dragged me down two flights of stairs. She then continued to drag me down the main stairwell leading to the castle ground floor. Of course the little brat followed close behind.
"He is a pure blood vampire king you i***t. Can't you at least try to be careful?! Just because Prince Timothy is your friend doesn't mean you can treat the other royals the same way." She pinched my ear harder as she went on scolding me like I was her bratty son.
"The witch is not wrong human."
"Yeah, yeah whatever." I bit back and released myself from India's vice grip. I bet my ear was red as f**k.
"But aren't you guys curious about what Zenas is hiding?"
"Careful human. You can't go around speculating the king this way."
"I know that Tim but you know he's hiding something. You know humans are starting to get hurt."
"That doesn't mean my brother is hiding a big mystery."
"Think about all this. Do you think he'll tell you anything if you ask?"
"No, of course not human."
"Kyle, he might need time to sort this out. Why not we just go home?" India suggested.
"Time? People are dying India." The more time Zenas takes, the more humans die. We were already dying with the monthly collection. Wasn't that enough? My mind took me to the time when I lost my entire family and the time Jerome almost killed me. I closed my eyes in defeat and looked away from India and Tim.
"I'll try to find out whatever I can human. In the meantime, do not discuss this matter to anyone. I mean it."
"You'd do that for us?" I abruptly turned around and stared at the young vampire prince. He seemed to be serious and that made me a little proud.
He nodded at me and then looked to India.
"Yeah I'll keep an eye on your friend, Your Highness." She understood exactly what Tim was thinking.
"I don't need a babysitter!" I grumbled but my friend simply gripped my arm and dragged me out of the castle grounds.
"How did you understand him?" I asked her as we walked towards our houses.
"Hah, you thought there was some mind s**t involved? No my dear friend. I just knew he wanted you out of trouble." India laughed at me.
"Since when do I get....?"
"I dare you to finish that sentence Kyle."
"You know what I'm gonna go visit Miss Vidarr...I mean, Lilian and see if she needs any help."
"Hmmm finally know her name huh?"
"Beautiful isn't it? Just like her. Lilian suits her perfectly." I sighed.
"Oh Kyle, you hopeless romantic!" India giggled at my lovestruck face.
"As much as you want to see her, wait till it's morning. I bet she needs to rest tonight Kyle. She's had an eventful day."
Taking my friend's advice, I bid her farewell when we came near our homes.
"Have a good night Kyle and please shower before you sleep. Please."
"Errghh alright, alright."
~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Next Day
I woke up extra early and met Tim half an hour earlier at the castle gates.
"Why the sudden determination for the job?" The brat sulked. I guess I messed up his sleeping time.
"We have five stops. I need to get it all done and finish sorting the letters out as quickly as possible."
"Why may I ask?" He crossed his arms over his chest. Just so you know, he wasn't even on the carriage yet.
"Get on the carriage now you little brat! Like seriously, I didn't come here this early so you can just waste that time away." He rolled his eyes and adjusted his coat before climbing the carriage. With the help of two servants by the way.
"Why are they here?"
"I'm not in a very good mood today. I do not appreciate the change in today's schedule human. You should have told me you were coming early so I could have woken myself up earlier and gotten ready swimmingly. Instead of that, I had to rush and since I was rushing, nothing turned out the way I want it to!"
His voice only got louder and louder until he was yelling at me.
I blinked at the little vamp. I've never caught him this irritated before so I just stared at him.
"What are you looking at human?!"
"N.... nothing. I just....sorry I guess?"
"It's too late for your meaningless apology!" He then swiftly turned around to his servants. " Stop hovering around! I'm on the carriage now so you can leave!" He barked out and commanded me to move.
"Wow." I whispered to myself and urged the horses to move.
It was a terrible first couple of hours. I was stuck in an inescapable awkwardness. Tim was either completely silent or he just barked out at anyone who looked at him in the wrong way.
That was the moment I reminded myself to NEVER disrupt his daily schedule. At least not before informing him of every detail.
"Okay Tim this is our fourth stop. It's a quick one so you don't really have to come. I can take care if this?"
"Just like how you assume you can take care of yourself?"
"Hey what's that supposed to mean?"
"Why did you ask me to wait? Do I not seem like a good enough partner today?!"
"Huh....what? Um....no?"
"Stop blabbering like a fool!!"
"Yeah....o..okay." I ran into the food store to deliver the letter.
Thankfully for me, the fifth destination was actually the opposite of the food store so I ran across the street without going anywhere near the carriage with a certain pissed of pure blood vamp.
"Phewww!! Okay we're done! Now you can go back to your home sweet home."
"Why?" He demanded.
"We're done with work. I can go sort the letters and parcels while you can....you know enjoy the rest of the day."
"Whatever. Just go back to the castle human. Your voice is killing me." He snapped.
Oh, he was lucky that I was actually patient that day. The little brat was going to get an earful tomorrow.
Fortunately, it was a quiet ride back home. I was grateful that he didn't shout at any innocent villagers. Once I dropped him off at the castle steps, I went into the postal offices. I shared my office with ten other delivery men. We would sort out hundreds of letters and parcels. Now, since businesses were allowed among us humans, the letters and parcels have increased tenfold. We were a lot busier than we used to be. I wouldn't expect anything less. Red Kingdom is the largest kingdom in the world. Even a little bigger than Golden Haven.
From the moment I sat at my desk, work went on like any other day. Two hours in and my mind got used to the flow of sorting things out.
"Kyle you can slow down. We have a few more hours before work ends." My colleague Delroy stated.
"I have to be somewhere so I'll be done in twenty minutes." I quickly said and continued to do my job.
"Is it important or you're just going to get candy again?" My eyes snapped up to his.
"That was one time Del!" I gritted out.
"More like five. So where are you rushing off to?"
"I'm meeting someone." He let out a sharp whistle.
"I knew you were dating her! I mean how could you not? She's gorgeous." He said excitedly.
What the hell was he talking about? How could he know about her?
"What?"
"That girl you're always with. Pretty and fierce."
"Who are you talking about?"
"Your friend? I mean obviously you guys are more than that. You're always with her."
"India?"
"That's her name? It suits her well. How did you get her anyway? You specifically." I was gaping at Delroy now. What the f**k?
"She's not whom I'm meeting with! She's my friend!"
"Liar."
"What do you want me to say? She's my friend Del. A really good friend by the way so f**k off."
"You're not lying. Wow. You know what? I'm gonna ask her out."
"You will do no such thing."
"Why? I'm beautiful, she's beautiful. We'll make a great couple Kyle."
"First off, don't hurt yourself by pursuing her hand. She's engaged. Moreover, don't piss her off by being such a dork. The witch can easily destroy you."
"Engaged and a witch! Sounds like an adventure for this guy!" He pointed to himself.
"I'll make sure you have a great funeral Del. Alright I'm done. Bye losers!"
I ran out of the office.
~~~~~~~~~~~
I excitedly continued running towards my carriage. As I got nearer to it, my excitement turned into confusion.
"Tim? What are-"
"I was taking a walk. Then I saw the horses and thought I'd feed them."
"Okay."
"Where are you rushing off to human?"
"To see someone. I'm leaving now."
"You are avoiding eye contact. Who is this someone?"
"You're such a brat! Go take a nap Tim. You were so f*****g cranky this morning."
"It is a normal emotion. It happens to a lot of people who are deprived of sleep."
"Whatever. I'm off now."
"Who is it?"
"The teacher okay! Damn you Tim."
"The woman you almost ran over? That same woman?"
"Why do you have to say it like that?" He smirked at me and turned around to leave. Good riddance.
"It won't work out human. Do mark my words." He said before walking up the steps.
"You have been extremely annoying you know that. Lose the attitude!!" I shouted before driving off.
