A month later.
Kyle's POV
"Despite what you say little brat, it's working out fine between me and Lilian. We're dating for a month now. Who would have thought?"
I sighed happily while driving my carriage. Even Sorin and Selene were in a good mood. Everything was going well. The Sun was shining gracefully, the atmosphere in the village was slightly lifted, the-
"Dates don't always end well human." Tim stared at me.
He was the f*****g definition of a party pooper.
"Stop being so sour! We'll visit the candy store on our way back." His eyes brightened up at that. "And don't forget that your birthday is coming up. You'll officially be a teenager. I hope those hormones don't drive people nuts. You're already unbearable."
"What?! My hormones will blossom like spring and I'll sprout into a marvelous, mature pure blood. Unlike you."
"Yeah, yeah whatever. Oh look Lilian!" We spotted her as we passed by the school. "Morning Miss Vidarr!" I sang like one of her students. She glared at me but couldn't control her blush.
She mouthed at me, telling me to leave before I could embarrass her further. I laughed to myself while Tim rolled his eyes like some sixty year old high class snob.
"Can't wait till you meet someone and I give you this exact same attitude." I grumbled at him.
"I will not be falling for some girl like an i***t. She'd have to earn even the tiniest bit of affection from me."
"You'll say that now."
"I mean every word. What has that woman done for you anyway? She's not that special."
"Hey Lilian is a good person. She has a warm heart and she's hardworking. I could ask you the same thing. What has she done to you? Why do you not like her?"
"Errghh you're so blinded by romance."
"You know she's not a bad person. That's why you're so frustrated. You can't find anything wrong with her."
"For now." He whispered and looked away. But I heard it loud and clear.
What is with this child?!
"Today's work will end quickly-"
"So we'll head for the candy store right after."
"Yeah exactly so quit being so bitter." I laughed at him.
After sending letters to a nearby chapel and two business owners, Tim and I were officially done for the day.
"So what are you going to do later on human?"
"I still have to sort the letters out and then maybe I'll meet Lilian for dinner. Why do you ask?"
"Gosh you stick to her like glue!"
"What?! No I don't! I spend a lot of time with you and India in case you forgot."
"What does the witch say about your puppy love?"
"For your information she approves. Get out of the carriage, we're here." I said as I stopped the carriage in from of the small candy store.
"She obviously doesn't want to hurt those sensitive feelings of yours." He sneered. He's been mocking me for the past few days and I have no idea what his problem was. He had more friends to hang out with, he was doing extremely well in his studies, he has all the fun he wants. So I don't know why he's being a complete jerk brat to me.
"Hey listen here you little s**t. First of all wear your cap properly." I admonished him. He dramatically sucked in a huge breath, not believing that I corrected a small part of his outfit.
I rolled my eyes as we walked into the shop.
"I just want to let you know I like her a lot and if things go smoothly in the next couple of weeks, I'm taking Lilian to meet my family." Tim stilled and slowly looked at me in disbelief.
"What are you? A princess?! Isn't it too soon?!"
"Sshhhh! No it's not. I'm not a princess and I'm not Alex. I'm just taking her to meet my family. It will happen eventually so what's the harm. We're in love. I've met her family members already. Now it's time for her to meet mine. What I'm actually trying to say is that, it would mean a lot to me if you could meet her too."
"W...what? Why? I mean no."
"Why not Tim? You're my closest friend. And she's very important so...."
"So......?"
"Eerghhh just get to know her and stop hating on her for no reason. If you met her, you would see for yourself. You would see what a wonderful person she is." Tim groaned, grumbled and mumbled for FIVE MINUTES STRAIGHT.
I was almost surprised that he didn't stomp his foot on the ground and make a tantrum.
"I prefer a simple yes or no."
He looked at me, glared at me, sighed and walked over to the sour candies.
"I take that as a yes so thank you."
"Whatever human."
~~~~~~~~~~~
After work
This time I decided not to rush out of the office. I took my time to properly arrange all the files and letters. The bigger reason was because I had to train a newcomer. Her name was íde and she had to work to support her family. She was only sixteen and her father had recently passed away.
When I asked her how it happened, she told me that her family couldn't understand it either. He suddenly became ill and died in a matter of hours. She told me how pale his body looked after he died. White as paper, with sunken eyes and veins more visible, almost protruding. Worry washed over me because she lived a few rows away from Lilian.
"I thought the attacks had stopped." I muttered in anger.
"Me too. We also think it was murder. Now my papa is gone and I have to support my family of six. How am I to do that when I'm in the most dangerous place in Red Kingdom?" She whispered and continued to learn what I had to teach her.
"Hey working here is different. You're not a servant. They won't grab you for blood. No vampire hurts anyone here. This is a paying job. They can't hurt us." Íde looked at me with big brown eyes and nodded.
"Yeah kid. We last way longer than the servants. There's a very slim chance that any of us will get killed horribly. Unlike those poor servants." Delroy tried to cheer her up but failed miserably. She looked even more terrified.
"I hope that one day a servant's job would be more respected." She said to Delroy.
We're food like it or not. So we'll always be walking blood bags.
I wanted to say it out loud but I didn't want to scare the girl too much on her first day.
"Okay so all the files are arranged in that cabinet right next to your desk. And that's all there is to do." I said.
"Okay got it Mr. Robins." She nodded and started sorting out the letters immediately.
"Del, I'm leaving."
"Alright. I'll be done in five minutes too." I walked over to him and told him to make sure Íde reaches home safely. He had a carriage of his own so it would be safer than her walking back alone. He saluted me and got back to work.
~~~~
When I stopped near the school, I saw that Lilian was sending off a few of the younger students. One of them hugged her before walking over to his parents. They f*****g adored her. This job would be a nightmare for me. I could never understand how she does it.
"Kyle? What are you doing there?" I heard her sweet voice. Lilian was wearing a simple, long A-cut cotton dress that came to her ankles. It was a light green which complimented her fair skin. Her pretty dress had yellow flower patters all over it and they somehow matched her hair. How radiant she looked.
"S..school's over right?" I cleared my throat and blinked at her.
"Yeah, and...?" She drawled, smirking at me.
"Let's have dinner." I said softly while she smiled and caressed my cheek with her soft palm. We then walked towards my carriage.
"I can't tonight Kyle. I have a prayer meeting with a few families."
Say what?!
Prayer who?!
"Why have I never heard of this before?" I asked puzzled.
"Because we never really went out on a Wednesday night." She giggled at my confused expression.
"Wow. You're involved in prayer meeting? You?! I thought these things were only for old people and people who were dying. Old people are so f*****g mean, they should ask for more forgiveness." She crossed her arms and patiently waited for me to blurt everything out.
"What do you there anyway?" I continued on.
"Excuse me? Oh are you done with your rambling?" She tilted her head to the side. I shrugged and looked at my shoes.
"We say simple prayers and pray for each other. Then there's also giving thanks to God. Occasionally, we pray for anyone who is having a hard time, we try to help them however we can. It's also a get together Kyle. Keeps the community close in a way."
"I will have no patience for such things. Does it last for hours?" I made a face which made Lilian cross her arms again.
"No Kyle Robins. It's only for an hour and a half. Maximum. After that we eat together. Potluck dinner. Wanna join?"
My eyes widened. Hell no.
How do I say it nicely?
Right then Lilian burst out laughing until her face became red.
"You should see your face." She wheezed.
Yeah you should see yours.
"Ha. Ha." I grumbled.
"Seriously Kyle you looked like a child caught cheating on a test." After she calmed down she looked at me and smiled. "I would never make you do anything you don't want to. Don't be so scared. Anyways, today's meeting is going to be longer." She cleared her throat and became more serious.
"A elderly woman died of a weird sickness." She said softly, trying to hide the hurt in her voice.
"You knew her." It was more of a statement from me.
"Yeah Kyle. She used to babysit me once in a while. So this is hard." I immediately pulled her in for a hug. She instantly wrapped her small arms around my waist and sniffled.
"I keep losing everyone around me." She whispered so quietly that I almost didn't hear the words.
"I'm so sorry Lilian. I truly am."
"It's not your fault Kyle. So don't apologize. I'll feel much better with the group tonight. Prayers help me release my bitter feelings." She looked up at me and smiled.
"Well, I'm happy it does some good for you. Will I see you soon?"
"Of course. Tomorrow is the funeral so I'll see you the day after."
"Alright then." I pulled her close and kissed her softly on the lips. She ran her fingers through my hair as we continued to kiss each other. She never failed to make me feel her warmth.
"I'll see you soon Lilian." I bid her farewell again.
Instead of going home, I went straight to India's.
~~~~~~~~~~~
"Well that makes three deaths Kyle. I can't believe this is happening again. We have to tell the King."
"Don't you think he already knows?! I bet he knows exactly what's happening in his kingdom. Which means he's dealing with something extremely dangerous."
"I think Zenas needs help and he's not asking anyone for it."
"Where are his f*****g parents?"
"I don't know Kyle but I bet they have no clue how bad the situation is. They would be here if they knew. Plus, if they're not here that only means they're carrying out something important." India gritted out and rubbed her forehead.
"Hey we'll figure this out. We'll do something." I held her shoulders.
"Yeah we definitely will. Kyle how about you go home and rest. You look tired."
"Am not. I'm great."
"Do you have to argue all the time?"
"Yes? I can't let you win all the time."
"Kyle!"
"What?!"
We talked for a bit and I left her house twenty minutes later.
~~~~~~~~~
India's POV
I love my friend but he's a pain in the ass.
As soon as he left, I quickly changed into a pair of slacks and a blue short sleeved blouse.
He is going to hear it whether he likes it or not. This could be a very bad idea but it had to be done.
I locked my front door and met Rexamus outside my house.
"C'mon boy." I clicked my tongue and we were off.
~~~~~
I walked by the castle guards like I was supposed to be there. And when any of them would look at me, that was exactly what I said to them. I feigned confidence so that they wouldn't ask too many questions. It worked and so I quickened my pace until I reached those familiar grand wooden doors.
After knocking twice I walked in whether or not I was allowed to.
"What the hell are you doing here? You're not even allowed inside!"
"With all due respect Your Majesty, this is urgent." His eyes bore into mine and the only thing I saw was rage. It would be a pathetic lie and say I wasn't afraid because I knew he could break my bones if he wanted to. However, I decided to stand my ground that night.
His anger only spiked up as his irises slowly began to transform from green to blood red. Why was he getting so angry so fast? This wasn't like him at all. He wasn't who he used to be.
"I am warning you witch." He seethed.
"My voice deserves to be heard." I said lowly ignoring the million possible outcomes of my action.
King Zenas slowly walked around his working desk obviously considering whether he should kill me or not. He then moved towards me without making a sound. The anger in his eyes never faded. He didn't approve the blatant disrespect from a commoner.
"You're crossing the line witch." His tone was soft but there was a low growl in his voice.
"All these deaths happening in Red Kingdom. You know about them don't you, Your Majesty." I said looking at him in the eye. I knew I wasn't supposed to but Zenas never actually said that that law would continue so I took my chances. Besides it was the only way to sense whether he was telling the truth or not. I needed to look him in the eye.
"How dare you barge into my office and question me? That is an insult in itself."
"You do know. You know more than anyone else. Don't you think we deserve to know what's happening in our village? People are dying Your Majesty."
"Who the hell do you think you are? You don't work here. You're not an advisor. You're not a council member. You are-"
"A commoner living in Red Kingdom and I deserve-"
"You don't deserve anything!! I guess you people have forgotten how things used to be. I loosen the reigns a tiny bit and this is what happens! A little nobody barging inside the King's office!! Questioning my rule!!"
"I'm not a nobody Your Majesty." I took a small step back as his anger intensified.
"You have no rights to act this way! If you wish to have an audience with the king you send a bloody letter and wait like everyone else!" He continued.
"You continue to yell at me and yet you can't even answer a simple question. What is happening? Humans are dying like animals! Don't they mean anything to you? Should we get used to this new situation? Is this how our king is going to be like?" By the time I was done I was breathing heavily. I couldn't believe I just said all that. The king just stood there and studied me for a long time. Then he took a couple of steps towards me until we were inches apart.
"Congratulations witch," he took a strand of my hair between his forefinger and thumb, playing with it. My heartbeat quickened but I said nothing.
He brought his lips close to my ear and breathe down on me. "You've just earned a special place in the dungeons." My eyes widened as he said those words.
"Guards!" Almost immediately, two guards came in and before I could understand what was happening, my wrists were bound by shackles. I didn't even get a chance to blink before I was being dragged out.
But just before we left the room, the king stopped us.
"One other thing, you can forget about your dream school. I can't have witches like you educating other witches. This is the first and last time something like this ever happens in my kingdom. You will be released once you completely understand your place."
Minutes after that, I found myself sitting in a cold, concrete cell. Thankfully I wasn't chained up. I sat in the corner with my knees up to my chest, lightly shivering. I guess a part of me knew this might happen.
At least now I know for sure that Zenas is dealing with a threat that was maybe too big for him. If he's not going to get the help he so desperately needs, it will be up to me to do something about it.
I just hope Kyle comes snooping around like he always does.
Two Days Later.
Kyle's POV
"I don't really know what to get him. What do young teenagers like anyway?"
"His birthday is not due for a long time and by that time, you'll figure it out. You know him better than anyone Kyle." Lilian's voice soothed my nerves. I had to get the little brat a good enough gift. What do you get a prince that has almost everything?!
"This is not going to be easy." I grumbled to Lilian as we walked along the trees. Lilian wanted to have a simple picnic near the stream in the village side and I happily obliged. She of course wore another patterned cotton dress. It was a white one decorated with floral shapes.
Me? I came with my f*****g uniform.
Today was a oddly busy day. We had more than ten letters to deliver and the sorting out work was extremely heavy today. I guess it was one of those bloody days. The spoilt brat of a prince wasn't any help at all. He just contributed to all the stress. He kept saying how I was lacking in my job and that I shouldn't be dating so much.
What. The. f**k?
"Sometimes I swear he acts like a f*****g grown up. Now he's acting like my dad." I grumbled to Lilian. She let out a hearty laugh as she looked at my irritated expression. After some looking around, Lilian found a nice breezy spot near the stream and we set everything up.
"Here this will calm you." Lilian cut out a big piece of apple pie for me. "This is one of my special recipes. You'll love it." She said proudly. I rolled my eyes and took a big bite out of it.
And I stilled.
I began to chew slowly, forgetting everything around me. It was only me and the pie. I tasted the apple flavour that burst inside my mouth. It was f*****g amazing. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the scrumptious treat.
"Mhmmm." I let out a deep sound of pure satisfaction. Lilian smiled knowingly.
"I need to take a piece back for India. She will love it."
"It would be my pleasure. I'll save her a big piece. The rest is yours Kyle."
"Really?!"
"I made it for you, silly." She smiled up at me. She was so beautiful. I stared deep into her twinkling eyes and simply sighed.
"I'm going to marry you." I said in all seriousness. I expected her to shove me away and scold me for joking but the only thing she did was blush uncontrollably. Her cheeks turned red as she looked away. She couldn't wipe the smile off of her pretty face.
"You can't just want to marry me because I baked you a pie." She shyly said after a while.
"It's not just the pie Lilian."
"I see." She nudged me playfully. "You want another piece?"
"You don't have to ask!" I said excitedly as she she moved to cut another piece. As she moved towards the pie, her soft smile that was playing on her lips slowly turned into a frown.
"Oh my God." She whispered as she stared at the picnic basket near the pie. Her hand that reached for the pie froze halfway. "Oh my goodness Kyle." She shakily spoke. By this time, I was beyond confused. Touching her shoulder gently, I asked her if she was alright.
"S...s...spider." She whispered. I let out a breath of relief and playfully glared at her. Lilian was extremely afraid of spiders. It was almost like a phobia.
"Don't worry just sit back and I'll throw it away." I said and looked for the bloody spider that chose to ruin my dear Lilian's mood. I searched for the spider while Lilian closed her eyes and scooted further away from me.
"Um....Lilian where is it exactly? I don't see any spiders." I said quizzically.
"What do you mean?! It's right there!"
"Lilian open those eyes of yours first!" I can't believe she was pointing at a random spot with her eyes closed.
She nervously opened her eyes and almost immediately let out a shriek. "It's right there! Beside the basket! The f*****g monster hasn't moved an inch!!"
Okay that's the first time I ever heard her curse. Hmm, it was nice to see her fiery side.
But first, I had to get rid of this thing. So I looked for it around the basket. Then under the basket and around the blanket. I even looked for it under the pie.
"Lilian it ran off. It's gone. You can come here now."
"A..are you blind Kyle?"
"Huh?"
"It's right there! Beside the basket! How could you not see it?! It's black and huge!" She cried out.
Now I was getting extremely confused. There was no spider. Lilian was seeing a spider. But there was no spider. What the hell? Am I blind?! Oh s**t!
I stood up and slowly went to her. Gently holding her shoulders, I tried to ease her worry.
"Lilian, I'm 92% sure it's gone. You must have seen one earlier and now it's just in your head. Don't worry it's gone." Lilian's scared expression turned into a look of anger. She cupped my face with one hand and turned me around so I was looking at the basket.
"It's right there!! The spider is still there!"
Okay that's it.
I forcefully pried her hand off my face and looked into her eyes.
"Lilian....are you...? What I mean to ask is that are you..... mentally challenged?" She gasped and stood up immediately.
"You mean to tell me you don't see a f*****g spider near the basket?" She angrily pointed towards the picnic basket. She looked irritated and hysterical. I on the other hand, didn't know what else to say.
"No. I don't." I whispered to her.
She shook her head and said she wanted to go home immediately. Lilian also told me to take the pie with me.
"Lilian wait, I'm sorry but I really don't see a spi-"
"It's fine I just want to go home. Spiders, they gross me out and now my skin feels prickly. Plus, I don't understand why you are so blind. I want to go home Kyle." She spoke as if she was out of breath.
"Hey, hey I'll take you back. But calm down Lilian. Breathe in."
"I can't, I just want to get away. My skin....it feels.." I hushed her and nodded in understanding. Then without saying anything further, I moved forward and scooped her in my arms.
"Kyle! What are-"
"I'll get you out of here."
Fuck the invisible spider!! Damn you!
Our ride back was completely silent. We just didn't know what to say to each other. Lilian was still freaked out. She couldn't stop rubbing the skin on her left arm. I could truly feel how uncomfortable it must have been for her.
Thankfully the ride wasn't that long and soon after we reached her house.
"Lilian that spider is gone. Please breathe properly like a human being." She sucked in a huge breathe and closed her eyes.
"I'll be fine Kyle. I'll be okay. Just send my regards to India. I hope she likes the pie."
"She'll love it and I'll see you soon? I had a good time. You know......before..." I shrugged and gave her a tight smile. She smiled a little and kissed me before saying goodbye.
Errgghhh, our next date will be a whole lot better that this!
I urged my horses to pick up their pace. I need to see India to vent out my frustration. It was the only thing that would make me feel better.
Or so I thought!
Guess what happened when I got there? Her house was f*****g locked up. The audacity of her leaving me alone! She probably took Rexamus out for a ride. I told myself that I would see her some other day.
I begrudgingly went back home and just plopped down on my bed. And then it was the next day.
I got ready for work, fed Sorin and Selene before readying my carriage. Ten minutes later, I went to the castle to collect the letters and pick Tim up. My mood did not brighten up.
"Good morning human. How many stops today?"
"Ehh, around three."
"Why so moody all of a sudden? I expected you'd be happy."
"Huh? I'm not moody at all."
"Whatever you say. Anyways, I think my brother will send us on another trip. Far away."
"Really? Why? And did you tell him about this weird sickness that has been going around in the village?"
"What sickness?" He blinked up at me.
"I didn't tell you?"
"Um, no?"
Shit I only spoke to India.
So I spent the next twenty minutes explaining to Tim about the sickness and all the deaths that has been going around. He listened patiently like always and promised to take the news to the king.
"Why doesn't your brother take drastic measures? Is there anything more to this Tim? Is there a more dangerous threat lurking somewhere?"
"I'm not sure human. I hope this ends soon."
I nodded and we continued with work. Once we drove back to the castle, I informed Tim that I was meeting Lilian again. He of course objected like the jerk he was. Moreover, he laughed his ass out when I told him about yesterday's incident. He couldn't stop laughing until I practically yelled at him. He also added that I shouldn't be dating women who were afraid of such common things. He said that it was very unbecoming of them.
Who even talks like that?!
I wanted to get back at him so badly so I did the only thing that would piss him off to no end. I messed up his hair and ran to my office. I knew it was forbidden to lay a finger on his perfect golden hair so that's exactly what I did.
I ruffled it real good and ran for my life.
