After their time in the bubble bath and then a massage, Cofer and Josey headed to bed. Cofer noticed Josey was staring worriedly at him. She had been making that same face throughout their time together. She had something to ask or say.
“Josey. Why do you stare at me like I’m a wounded puppy you can’t save?” Cofer asked.
“Since we were in my lab, I can’t shake the feeling that you are hiding something from me. We can feel each other's feelings, but I have to focus on getting a little bit of yours. Which leads me to believe that you are intentionally concealing them. You have been doing so for at least 3 weeks.” Josey stated while staring directly into his eyes.
Cofer looked down at his hands. It was time.
“Let’s have a seat.” Cofer moved his hand to signal Josey to sit on the bed.
He settled in, too.
“First I can hear Sueli. I can hear her constant despair. Her crying and yearning for Valin. Occasionally she speaks and you seem to not have any recollection of her taking over.”
Josey had taken a deep breath and not released it yet. Then tears started to flow from her eyes, “I can hear her too. I have been trying to meditate to keep her voice from being so loud in my head. It hurts soooo much Cofer.” Josey was in full meltdown mode and he hadn’t gotten to the bad part yet.
“Calm down Josey. There is something I have been needing to tell you.”
Josey wiped her eyes then took a kleenex from the box Cofer offered to her.
“When I picked Valin's dying body up to carry him back to Wilshana, your voice and Sueli’s, cried out with a weird trailing effect. There was so much pain in it. It almost made me jealous.” Cofer nervously laughed.
“Dsa was even having a hard time seeing him as he was. He only had a couple of minutes left in the human realm. His blood flowed like a river from his wound. “ Cofer stopped and gulped.
“I sat his body up and I held him tight.” Tears started to run down Cofer’s face. “He smelled just like you. Even though you all hadn’t been around each other for 24 hours, your scent was ingrained in his skin. It almost felt like I was losing you. So I bit him.”
“You did what?” Josey and Sueli spoke. This time they were perfectly in sync.
“I worked to turn him into a vampire. Instead of drinking his blood, I tried to imbue his soul with a piece of mine.” Cofer took a deep breath.
“While I concentrated, I could feel his memories of you dissolving, memories associated with me were disappearing, but if I had stopped I wouldn’t have given him enough of my life to heal him.”
Josey and Sueli were stirring, their body rocked back and forth, their breathing was ragged.
“C-c-c-cofer? He’s alive?” Their voices trembled.
“Please hold on.” Cofer said, then continued. “I had Dsa notify me the moment his pulse became steady, so that we could administer the medicine to change him back to a human.”
“He’s alive.” They were starting to get giddy and then reality set in. Cofer let them grieve as if Valin was dead. He watched them cry in silence. He let their hearts split and twist and turn.
“WHAT THE f**k COFER!!” Sueli screamed. Cofer instinctively jumped to his feet. He was pretty sure she was going to kill him.
“Honey! Let me finish.” Cofer started to backpedal as Sueli moved to get out of the bed. A cloud of darkness had formed around Josey’s body. Sueli was trying to consume Josey. She was making her way to the human realm. She stopped in front of Cofer.
“SPEAK!” Her voice echoed like most demons did.
Cofer looked away from Sueli, “After Dsa contacted me and said Valin had awakened after a week. I told her I would come see him. She told me not to bother. He doesn’t remember us. I had a feeling that would be the case, but I visited him nonetheless as the King of Nethersigh. He smiled and shook my hand. I could barely hold myself together. I told him we had known each other before he became ill, me and Josey. He looked at me confused. Valin was confused, Josey. Your name didn’t ignite the normal obsessive yearning he has had for more than three years.” Sueli fell to her knees but never broke eye contact with him.
His lips trembled while he tried to explain what happened to Sueli. “He told me that he would work on remembering his past but he needed to remember the woman carrying his baby, Dsa. On top of that, he would be getting married soon and he had a wife to get to know. I thought my heart would burst from my chest. How could I tell you that I saved your love but he no longer loves you or knows you? How?” Sueli looked down at the floor. Cofer watched the darkness that flowed around Josey’s body engulf her.
“Sueli, don’t take Josey! Please!” She reached up and grabbed Cofer by the throat and held him in the air. Her horns grew long and her wings were the size of Josey’s body. Her feet were covered in a bloody tar like sludge as she stepped from the bowels of hell into the human realm.
She was strong. Her words had their very own echo. Sueli whined, “My love doesn’t love me? You took my love from me… NOW HE’S GETTING MARRIED!” Her grip tightened. Tears of blood streamed from Sueli’s eyes. She looked so broken. Cofer did not want to have to use his vampire powers on her, but she was trying to kill him.
“Sueli. Put your King down.” Her lips pouted and quivered but she slowly lowered Cofer’s body back to the floor.
“Will he ever remember me?” Sueli asked.
“I don’t know. I can’t make any promises.” Cofer said softly, trying hard not to further provoke her. She crumpled to the floor and let out a scream that brought Cofer to his knees. The manor started to shake, parts of the walls crumbled. Cofer threw his arms around the greasy, sticky darkness.
“Please stop Sueli.” He did not like the way she felt. The darkness swallowed his arms. He could feel the hellish heat coming from within. She laid her forehead on Cofer’s shoulder and continued to cry.
Valin had tamed a demon. He would say that was amazing, but Josey had him wrapped around her pinky finger.
“I really didn’t want to tell you but his wedding will be televised across the country. Also, he invited us to the ball after the wedding. They are having a closed ceremony.”
“We are going, right?”
“Yes, but you have to control yourself. You will only need to watch him from afar, “ Cofer said. He looked into Sueli's solid black eyes; they pulsed with the same bright green color that Josey’s purple eyes inadequately concealed.
“Bring Josey back.”
Sueli was calmer. She was sadder than he had ever seen her. “Yes. My King.” The dark fog folded into themselves, giving birth to Josey. Cofer caught her unconscious body. She soon woke up. This time she was aware that Sueli had taken over and she had heard the whole conversation.
Josey looked up at Cofer. Her eyes were filled with puddles of water. She sat up and started to get to her feet. “You aren’t going to speak to me?” Cofer inquired.
“I need a moment.” Josey walked over to her side of the bed and got under the cover. He felt helpless. He turned the lights off and climbed into the bed behind Josey. Throughout the night he could hear them sniffling. When she finally fell asleep she would wake up screaming Valin’s name, then cry some more. This repeated itself more times than Cofer wanted to think about. That night he didn’t sleep one wink. He watched them. He watched the tears roll down their sleeping cheeks. He felt like dying. He stared into the darkness of the canopy that covered them. He wanted to run far away. He would take her to see Valin and then do just that.
