Tender Thoughts

1540 Words
Soon he tore himself away from the window and headed to Josey's lab. He needed to hold her. His thoughts were getting the best of him. He took the elevator to the first floor, then navigated the pedway. The breeze coming through the windows was pleasant. He stopped and inhaled the smell of cleaning products faintly masked with the scent of vanilla. Then he exhaled reality. He didn't stop to take in the breeze. He was stopping because he was scared to see his traumatized wife. His thoughts were conflicting. On one hand, he needed to hold her and, on the other, he wanted to avoid her. Every time he looked at her fake smile, Sueli was asking 'why couldn't you save him?' She was ruining his time with Josey. He couldn't even fully enjoy s*x because his partner was no longer a beautiful combination of Josey and Sueli. Josey alone couldn't handle him, he had to be gentle at all times. He felt like he would break her. Because of that, he rarely saw Josey's wings and her horns were small, like little nubs. Sueli was retreating. It was like she had found this little cubbyhole in Josey's mind and was balled up in the fetal position crying in it. He didn't know how to tell Josey that he could hear Sueli. She was never vocal until Josey gave her a name. It was all disconcerting for the most part. He knew if he could hear her then she was loud and unyielding in Josey's head. Sueli was making him earn the dark circles under his eyes. He continued his walk to see Josey. No matter what, he wanted to hold her even if it meant hearing Sueli's soft whimpering. When he walked into Josey's lab, she was completing some complex calculations on her digital writing board. "Don't mind me. Just came to see you." Cofer said. Josey smiled a crooked smile and walked over and put her arms around his neck. "What's wrong? I feel like you are hiding something from me." Josey whispered. "Me? You're the one who's in mourning." Cofer thought to himself. "Why do you ask?" Cofer deflected. "When we made love last night, you didn't even bite me. In fact, you haven't drunk my blood since you found out I was pregnant. Do you think you will injure the babies?" Josey inquired. Cofer looked away from her. [That’s not why.] The warmth from her body was heating him up. He rubbed his hand over Josey’s slightly protruded belly, then responded, “I miss him as much as you do.” Josey stepped back, “What?” He could hear anger in her voice. He had struck a nerve, but why? “Why do you recoil? Why am I not allowed to care?” Cofer said. “You are the mother of OUR children. Why do you act like I have no right to hurt too?” Cofer continued. “Stop it Cofer!” Sueli’s voice boomed, making him take a step back. “Cofer. I don’t want to talk about that.” Josey’s loving voice said, additionally. They were switching personalities, seamlessly.[How frightening.] He stared into their eyes and decided to change the subject slightly. “I want more kids. Maybe 5 or 6 but I need both of you.” Before Josey or Sueli could respond, he kissed them deeply. At first, they didn’t reciprocate. He could feel them looking at his face. He felt embarrassed and a little angry. Then she pulled him into her. He exhaled, relieved. He whispered into her ear, “Let me take a closer look at our babies.” Josey nodded. He pushed his hands under her tight t-shirt and gently moved his hand over her baby bump. He felt compelled to kiss her stomach. He proceeded to move her shirt up further and play with her n*****s. Josey moaned his name. He wrapped one arm around her waist and continued to roughly suck on her breast. The louder she moaned his name, the more he wanted to feel her. He pushed his free hand into her short shorts and massaged her slit. Josey opened her legs further, inviting him to play ‘til his heart was content. He licked and bit at her neck. He wanted to suck her blood. She tasted so good when she came. He hesitated, then heard her. “Taste me now.” Sueli was in his head, loud and clear. Cofer closed his eyes and pushed his fangs deep into Josey and his fingers even deeper. The sweet taste of her blood mixed with the excessive heat on the palm of his hand made him hold her tighter. She clawed and ripped at his skin as she screamed his name repeatedly. After her body stopped shaking, Cofer kissed her cheek and withdrew his hand. He rubbed his fingers together, he wanted to smell them but he didn’t want to look like a complete pervert. [f**k….I love the way she smells.] Josey kissed the corner of lips and held her face against his. “5 or 6, uh?” Josey giggled, then rubbed her hands into the back of his hair. “I can’t help how I feel,” Sueli said. Cofer knew it was her, she smelt like a demon. She smelled like a bar filled with cigarette smoke and forgotten dreams. Cofer hated her scent. It was a far cry from the coconutty scent that graced Josey’s skin. Unlike vampires that were created in the human realm, Sueli's soul was indeed of Hell. Cofer stood still and listened. “He was my Josey.” She said, then faded back into the darkness. He felt her words. They struck a nerve in his heart like a guitar solo full of extreme riffs. “Cofer, you okay honey?” Josey asked. He was trying not to cry but he understood all too well the pain of losing Josey. He pulled a hand wipe from its repository and then a kleenex. “I’m okay. Let’s get something to eat.” Cofer watched her like he needed to see if she would suddenly change again. Her reaction meant that Sueli was able to come and go without Josey’s knowledge. [How troublesome.] Cofer kept a smile on his face. He wasn’t ready for Sueli. He would have to have a long talk with the two of them and figure out the best way to keep their relationship intact. He reached back and grabbed Josey’s hand and slightly squeezed it, then touched the back of her hand to his lips. Josey touched his cheek with her other hand. After their exchange, they walked and talked until they reached the dining room. After the meals were served, Josey continued to talk excitedly about her current project. He loved listening to her. He remembered how he felt when he realized how much fun genetic research was. Every time she smiled, he wanted it to last for just a moment longer. But he never told her something about that day they found her. He did not know how she or Sueli would take it. He was pretty sure it was going to be a deal breaker for their relationship. This was one of many times in a few months, he had been afraid of losing Josey. At this point, he thought about heading out to return the gargoyles to their home. He felt like he had procrastinated long enough. Josey was so lost in her discussions about her research she didn’t even notice him being lost in his thoughts. After they finished eating, they went for a walk. All of Josey’s actions made him feel like she already knew he was leaving her and she was trying to get all the time she could with him. The evenings in Nethersigh were warm with a cool breeze. They held hands and watched the construction efforts and discussed what they were going to do with homes or buildings they could salvage. Cofer sighed. Sometimes it just didn’t seem real. It only made sense that he would eventually wake up from his beautiful dream. Josey used to hate walking these streets because of the hateful stares. Now people stared and bowed to their queen. By the time they made it back home, they were a little sweaty. Josey insisted they have the spa prepared. She was spoiling him again. Cofer was addicted to washing and touching Josey’s hair. He first got to play in it during their shower. He slowly ran his finger through her hair as the water flowed through it. Afterwards, they walked to the bubble-filled tub. He loved the way her hair filled the pool. How, with one wrong move, he would have to fight for his life to get out of it. Her pitch-black hair reminded him of the abyss that she had found herself trapped in before her full awakening. While he thought happy thoughts and massaged shampoo into her hair, his most disparaging thoughts would not free him.He knew that his leaving would not make her happy and the reason he was leaving was going to put a strain on his relationship with Sueli for sure.
