It didn’t take long for Georgia to pack up her most important possessions and she was saddened to see that everything that mattered to her seemed to fit in one single suitcase. She hadn’t bothered to pack much clothes. Just a pair or two. Wherever she ended up, she can buy more there.
She looked at the time from the clock perched on her bedside drawer, and saw it reading 11:52. It had been exactly 25 minutes since she left the office and she knew she was running out of time.
She had been right not to trust that f*****g bastard arthur. Because when she had checked her accounts, she was shocked to find out her assets had been frozen. She had nearly a million dollars saved in there and now she couldn’t access it at all. But she was comforted by the fact that she had always kept a safe in her house filled with more than a few thousand dollars in cash.
Which she had quickly packed at the bottom of her suitcase. Together with her more expensive precious jewelry and necessities. She took one last longing look at her apartment, which she would’ve had to leave in a few months when she would have moved to her new house, but no that wasn’t a possibility anymore.
Ten years she’s spent in Roman city and only two people would really care were she to disappear overnight. She’d never been able to tolerate a man outside of her bedroom, she hadn’t any patience for them and they always required too much from her. More than she’d been willing to give. And so she left them. Year after year after year, until even the occasional fling became such a bore to her and she’s remained alone ever since.
And whenever the urge became too strong for her, she’d drive miles to go to a bar to snag up a one nightstand, because she knew it’d be hard for them to trail her, and involve themselves in her very private life.
She exited her apartment, leaving most of her less important personal belongings like shoes, some makeup, clothes etc, and walked away without a second glance back. She hoped she wouldn’t meet any of her neighbors on the way as she didn’t wish to have to explain herself to anyone. She wanted her departure to be as discreet as possible, if she wanted to evade the eyes of the law.
She rode the elevator down without any hitch and walked all the way out of the building with only one little girl inquiring where she was off to with a suitcase. And before she could conjure up a lie, something else attracted the attention of the girl and she went bouncing off without waiting for a reply.
As Georgia hurriedly made her way to the parking lot, she couldn't help but feel a deep sense of sadness and loss. Her life, as she had known it for the past ten years, was crumbling around her. The city that had once been her sanctuary had now become a place of danger and uncertainty.
With her suitcase in tow, she reached her Audi, a symbol of her hard-earned success. She opened the car door and placed the suitcase on the passenger seat. Her heart raced as she inserted the key into the ignition, knowing that every second counted.
The engine roared to life, and she quickly sped away from her apartment building. As the cityscape rushed past her, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was leaving a part of herself behind. Her friends, her career, her home – all of it was now in jeopardy. All because of one bastard of a man. It was so f*****g unfair.
She made a mental note to find a secluded place to regroup and figure out her next move. She still hadn’t made up her mind wether she is to return to that nightmare of a city, or if she’d remain on the run until the cash she had with her was depleted. But what a risk that was, she didn’t exactly know how she was to evade the police, and she sure as hell knew she wouldn’t be able to pass through an airport without being arrested. Her only option was to drive to wherever the hell would be safe for her.
The farther she drove, the more the reality of her situation sank in. She was alone, with no one to turn to but herself. The man who had set her up was powerful, and she needed to be cautious to avoid capture. Her phone buzzed with messages from Skylar and Maddie, the only two who’d care if she wound up dead in the woods, but she couldn't bring herself to answer them just yet.
As Georgia continued to drive further from the city, she realized the farther she was from the bustle of the city of the more regained some semblance of safety. With the radio off to avoid drawing attention, the rhythmic hum of the engine became a soothing backdrop to her thoughts.
Feeling the need for a momentary distraction from the chaos of her life and the loneliness that was beginning to consume her, she reached over and switched on the car radio. At first, the station was playing some unfamiliar old school tune, but she quickly discovered to her horror that her escape was not as fast as she had hoped.
A news report began, and her heart pounded as she heard the words "police search" and "Georgia Valentine" in the same sentence. Panic welled up inside her as she realized that her situation had escalated far more quickly than she had anticipated. She hadn’t even been gone two hours tops since she left her law firm, wasn’t that too fast? So much for a whole day arthur, thanks for f*****g nothing.
The reporter's voice filled the car's sleek interior. "Breaking news just in, folks. A high-stakes police operation is underway to apprehend Georgia Valentine, a former legal ace accused of espionage and leaking government secrets. Authorities are urging anyone with information about her whereabouts to come forward. She is considered armed and dangerous. If you see her, do not approach and contact your local law enforcement immediately."
Georgia's sweaty grip on the steering wheel tightened, and she glanced in her rearview mirror, suddenly paranoid that there were unmarked cars following her. She couldn't believe how quickly her life had spiraled out of control. Like it wasn’t this morning when she thought her biggest trouble was a bad hair day. How could her life change so much in barely a few hours?
Tears welled up in her eyes as she tried to push down the growing sense of dread. She knew she needed to keep moving, to find a place of temporary safety to sort out her next steps. But the weight of the police manhunt now on her trail made her feel like a fugitive in her own country. I’m f*****g innocent she wanted to roar at the radio, why was she being subjected to all this?!
They were right. Sky and Maddie were right. The only choice she had was to go back home. To the people that detested her. Who never bothered to reach out to their 16 year old daughter after she’d left home. She didn’t even know if she could count on these people to help her but she didn’t have any other option. The police must have cycled her photographs around, nobody would be willing to help her now. Georgia valentine was a condemned criminal now. She had no choice but to go back to being Georgia Valentino. A daughter to the Valentino house, one of the major families at the top higher society in the nation.
She had chosen the Roman city because it was so far disclosed from high society. They were a tiny city that didn’t mix with the circles she grew up in. And now she could hope they were so far removed they wouldn’t be able to discover her true identity.
The memories of her past came rushing back, the pain of abandonment, the harsh judgments, and the years of striving to make a name for herself despite it all. Moore city was a place of torment for her, but it might also be her only sanctuary.
