31. Galaxies

At some point in the middle of the night, light wakes me up. It's coming from outside. I stare for a long time. I can't put together what I'm seeing. It's huge.

Tre wakes up and snuggles me.

"It's a galaxy baby. We're outside of it."

"What?"

"One of those bright dots is our sun. Those other bright dots are other suns. Our planet is rotating around one of those dots."

"Which one?"

"I have no idea."

"How are we outside of space?"

"We're not outside space baby. See those other bright spots outside our galaxy. Those are other galaxies."

"Galaxy's like this one? With many suns and planets?" He pulls me closer.

"That's right."

Future Marcus comes in. "We are going to make the jump into hyperspace. That means we'll be traveling very very fast. We'll come out of hyperspace this evening, and we'll be near the next galaxy we are going into. But we want you to watch the sequence and how we do everything."

"How long will it take?"

"Probably 2 hours."

"No. That's too long she needs to eat."

"I can eat Tre. It's ok. You can go watch. Don't forget you need to eat too, though. We can watch our movie in a couple of hours."

"You promise you'll eat some lunch? And not chocolate and popcorn."

"I promise."

"You can have pizza, but you'll be eating meat again for dinner."

"Ok."

I sit on the couch with bear. "Let's go eat lunch at that place with the big window. I bet the galaxy is pretty from there."

I carry bear by his arm. I make it to the moving walking paths. The view is amazing. I lay down on the path and watch the galaxy as it moves me down the super-long hallway.

I almost get to the end, and I get picked up by a mad future Tye. My Tye is right behind him. I don't think he knows why the other one is mad either.

"What are you doing?"

"Going that way."

"No. Look." He points to the ground as we step onto nonmoving floor. "Your hair or dress can get caught in that. It could really hurt you. You wouldn't be able to stand up, and it would keep pulling you in." He gives me a big hug. "Don't lay on it. That's not safe."

My eyes fill up with tears.

He gives me another hug. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get upset. I know you didn't know. It scared me."

"Keep going." Future Dipak crosses his arms.

"f**k you dickhead. I'm not going to let her get hurt." He lets me go.

"She's not going to get hurt riding the people mover Tye."

"She will if she's laying on it."

Dipak rolls his eyes. "You don't lay on it."

I have had enough of this jackass. I kick him as hard as I can in the shin. "YOU REALLY ARE A DICKHEAD." I run for the elevator.

Future Tye cracks up laughing.

I get up to the lunch place, "Chicken strips and fries please. And ketchup and ranch sauce. And water."

I give it a minute and it buzzes. Me and bear sit by the window wall again. I was right, this is amazing.

The alarms sound every 30 seconds. Suddenly, the galaxy is gone. I check all over. Straight up and out the ceiling and everywhere. It is gone. All I can see is trails of light out the windows now.

"Bear, I'm kind of scared."

"Eat your food." Future Dipak is standing beside me. "We're in hyperspace. We're moving so fast that all we can see is light trails from distant galaxies. In about 6 hours there will be a different galaxy out the windows."

"Thank you." I put a fry in my mouth.

"I'm not trying to be mean."

"Leave me alone."

"No."

I run for it again. I get in the elevator and hit the 4. I step on the people mover and cross my arms. He's so mean. I get about halfway across and look back. He's on the people mover too and he's got bear. He's walking fast towards me. I run again. Then I run up the escalator.

I get to the top, and it confuses me. I fall straight down. The end of it catches my arm and my knee. I jump up and it really hurts. There is blood everywhere. I fall back on the ground and blood pours out of my arm. It's running out of my leg too. It hurts. At least I got off the escalator.

I try to crawl, but I slip in the blood and my head hits the ground. Right in the blood puddle. I give up and cry.

Future Dipak picks me up. "You're ok. Get a bio containment crew for this and get that bear up to the command area."

An alarm goes off. "Medical respond to 16th floor escalator area. Bio containment crew to 16th floor escalator area."

"Send medical to the command center instead."

"Medical cancel last and respond to command center."

He kisses my head and I wrap around him crying. "You'll be alright. I got a doctor coming for you. But I promise it's ok." He carries me to the elevator and up to the command room.

Future me looks at Dipak. "Did you 2 go through a war without us?"

"What happened, Dipak?"

"She declared war on the escalator. Lost a lot of blood, doctor."

"I'm going to start with your head, Nadine. Did you hit your head?"

I shake it and wipe my eyes. "It fell in the blood."

"Things like escalators or people movers have to be used with caution." He sprays something on my knee and it heals. "They won't stop if you get stuck in them. They will keep going, and they can rip arms or legs off." He sprays my elbow and it heals. "You have to use them responsibly. No running or jumping..."

"Or laying down." Future Tye smiles.

"Or laying down... You have to use them correctly, or they can hurt you badly. Are you going to be more careful now?"

I nod and wipe my tears away.

"I believe you will be more careful now. She needs a bath, extra blood, and a change of clothes, but other than that, she's perfectly fine."

My boys take 2 steps towards future Dipak. He puts his hands up. "Relax. Why don't you eat dinner with everyone tonight? You're keeping yourself so isolated, and it's not good for you."

I shake my head. "I already ate."

"No you didn't. You didn't even eat lunch."

"Woman."

"I tried. He wouldn't leave me alone."

My Dipak glares at his older self. "Do we have to watch you now too?"

"No."

My Marcus picks me up. "Let's go get you a bath. This room is going to explode again."
