“The dungeon!” She whispered with a smirk. “Mother is in the dungeon!”
Instead of immediately leaving to find her mother, Blaze decided to stay behind and listen further. Maybe she would get some more information from their conversation.
“What if the Ace Wolf is among them and is only pretending?! We have no way of knowing if she is around! We cannot identify her by her scent! That is how powerful the Ace Wolf is. The only way to get her is to make her come out by herself and that is exactly what I am doing! By killing her people, we are forcing her to come out of wherever she is hiding.” There was no remorse in the King’s tone as he spoke and that made Blaze despise him more.
‘How can someone be so inhumane?’ She thought, gritting her teeth in anger.
“And the innocent children? You’ll kill them too?” The Queen’s voice broke as she spoke, and it sounded like she was crying.
“I’ll do whatever it takes to make her reveal herself. Even if it means killing innocent women and children. If she wants to avoid that, she has to come out of hiding.” He said, and the Queen sighed out of frustration.
“That’s g******e, my king! You will be no different from the devil if you do that.” Queen Eliza cried.
“Have I ever cared about what people think about me? If I did, I wouldn’t be where I am now.” He said and dismissed the conversation.
Blaze stood by the door for a few seconds, shaking with anger. Anika was doing her best to not come out and rip the king into pieces right there. But, they couldn’t risk it. Not when her mother, Diana, hasn’t been found.
After a short while, when she did not hear any sound from the room, she left. Her only concern was how to find the dungeon.
There was only one way which was to ask one of the maids, but, she wasn’t even sure if maids were allowed to go in.
But, she was going to risk it.
Blaze looked at herself in one of the mirrors that were along the hallway and saw that her head tie was coming off, and her red hair was starting to poke out, so, she quickly adjusted it, tightening it more.
“What are you doing?” She heard the familiar voice of Becky from behind and her heart skipped in out of fear.
‘Did she see my hair?’ She thought, biting her lips nervously. Well, there was only one way to find out.
“Becky! What are you doing here?” Blaze immediately turned to her, masking her emotions.
Becky drew her eyes at Blaze, eyeing her suspiciously.
“Running errands. What are you doing here?” Becky threw the question back at Blaze. She knew that since Blaze only started working in the palace a few days ago, there was no way she would be getting assigned to the upper room already.
“Running errands too.” Blaze said, unfazed, and Becky rolled her eyes.
“Liar! Only maids who have worked her for over five years can be assigned to the upper floor.” Becky said and Blaze bit her tongue but, being as quick-witted as she was, she came up with another lie.
“Prince Reese sent me.” She said with a smile, giving herself a high-five for being a quick thinker.
Hearing Blaze say the prince’s name once again made Becky more angry. She hated that Blaze was already close with the prince after being in the palace for only two days.
Blaze decided to go further with her lie since she had already started.
“I am quite new here. Do you know where the dungeon is? Prince Reese has sent me there to call a guard too.” Blaze said, and to add more content to her lie, she shook her head dramatically.
“You know, I have told the prince to not make it so obvious that we know each other but, he never listens.” She said and if looks could kill, Blaze would have been dead because Becky was throwing bullets at her with a glare.
“It’s ten kilometers away from here. You can’t get there by foot, Blaze. If Prince Reese tells you to call someone from the dungeon, he certainly doesn’t like you. Good luck with finding your way there.” Becky chuckled and walked away, leaving Blaze to herself.
“Ten kilometers? How big is this palace?” She sighed.
She would have to use the prince’s horse to get there as she couldn’t be seen using her wolf on the palace grounds.
“Let’s go rescue mother.” Blaze said to her wolf as she ran out of the building. She didn’t know where she was headed but, she was going to trust her instincts and, of course, Anika.
“Can you trace mother’s scent?” She asked Anika as she walked into the stable to find a horse. She later realized that taking the prince’s horse would be an impossible task, so, she was going to settle for any horse.
“Nothing, Blaze. She’s too far away.” Anika replied and Blaze sighed. As she neared the stable, she saw that there was no one around, so she thanked the moon goddess and stole one before riding off to find her mother.
She followed her instincts and rode eastward, looking around as she did so.
Ten minutes later, she noticed a set of people being flogged from afar. They were dressed in rags and covered in dirt. She also saw some people who were dressed in the palace guard’s uniform surrounding the building.
“There it is!” Anika said and Blaze felt her eyes tear up.
There were lots of women, most of them with red hair, lining up as they were being flogged by the guards outside the building.
Blaze felt a tear leave her eye as she got down from her horse.
“What is a palace maid doing here?” One of the guards walked up to her, stopping her from going any further.
As she searched for a lie to tell him, she saw someone who looked exactly like her mother follow the other women into the building, her face battered and her body bleeding.
“M-mother.” She said, loud enough for the woman to hear and when she did, Blaze felt her hear
t skip.
It was really her mother.
