CHAPTER 5 ALYSSA EDWARDS There was no way I was going to let this guy make me pay for that Ferrari without me at least trying to get some money on my own. I didn't even want to listen to his offer and for the next few days, I focused on trying to get a job and fortunately avoided him. I asked Nick Troy to help me find a job and so when I saw his car approaching, I knew he had some good news. I hopped into the car and he passed me his half-eaten burger which I took and bit into whilst grabbing the newspaper he had on his laps. "Did you escape breakfast again?" he asked and I nodded, trying to swallow the big hungry bite I had taken from the burger. "Aunt keeps asking me about Manager Sam and I don't want to keep lying. Besides, Frank will find out sooner or later and I don't want that." Nick nodded and I circled the jobs in the job section of the newspaper. "You look bad, Alyssa, please get some sleep," He said first but I ignored him and continued to look through. "Did you check the job at the restaurant? Has that job been taking?" I cut in. "Not really, but I'm sure they aren't looking for a minor. Do you want to check that one out?" "But I will be eighteen soon?" Nick laughed and shrugged. "We can check that out." "Yes, then I'll try the one at the club too." I decided and he stared at me in astonishment. "Club? Isn't that a bit too dangerous?" "The pay is good. I'll take that one too. I'm not sure I'll even pass the interview." I laughed. "If you want to I can talk to the man for you. I know him but the problem is that club belongs to Daniel and... " I sighed. Nick had told me about the guy. At least a little bit but I knew there were not many jobs in this city that didn't belong to him or his family, I guess. "As long as the money is good and he doesn't get to know, I'll take it, thanks." I smiled sadly and he stared at me for a few seconds and started the car. +++ CLUB I was emptying the rubbish in the trash can outside when the manager came out to meet me. "Your skills are really impressive, Alyssa. The customers really like you. This is your pay and I added a tip." He said and I was glad. "Can I work here tomorrow too?" I asked nervously and he nodded. "Of course. Be here same time okay. Your skills are to be kept." He smiled and nodded. "Thanks, Sir." I stared at how heavy the envelope was. If I work here for about six months I can be able to pay for the surgery." "Seth? The boss is here and wants to see you immediately." One of the waitresses ran there and the manager excused himself and left. I covered the trash can and added the gloves, going back inside. I saw the manager and...Daniel chatting. They turned to face me. "She's the one." The manager pointed. "You know what to do," Daniel said simply and my mouth fell agape. "What?" "Yes. You heard me. I'm firing you. Tonight is your last night here. Matthew, find a replacement for her." He said simply and walked out through the back door. I had no choice but to follow him. His men had held out the door for him but I called him and he turned. "Daniel?" He turned with a frown. "Why are you doing this? Don't you want me to be able to pay you back?" He was unbelievable. "Seth praised my skills." "What skills? The wiping of the tables or the serving of the drinks?" He snapped and I went silent. He took in a deep breath, slipping his hands into his pocket.  "How much are you going to be able to raise in such a short possible time? Don't you even want to listen to my offer?" I shook my head with a chuckle. "I am not sleeping with you." "Who said that's the job? Call me when you are ready to listen to me." With that, he walked away. ++++ I arrived home very late and my aunt was waiting for me. "Are you always going to come home this late, dear?" She asked with concern but I said nothing. I went straight upstairs but saw that my brother's room was empty on my way to my own room. His door was ajar. I went inside, switching on the lights. I looked around. I saw blisters and tablets of medicine on his bed. Plopping down on the bed, I sighed. This was the kind of responsibility we needed to take care of. Frank's sickness was what had sent this family into jeopardy and here I was going around and running people's luxury cars. How will Frank and everyone take the news that I have to work twice to get money for Frank's sickness and to pay for a Ferrari? I wiped my tears and looked around only for my eyes to fall on another paper on his bed. It was a letter from the doctor requiring the surgery the whole family had rejected about two years ago. The doctor had explained why it needed to be done right now if we did want him to live for long. The door opened and Frank came in. When he saw the result in my hand he got mad. "What are you doing in my room?" He asked angrily but he looked pale and weak. His hands were in his hoody pockets. "I... I..." He walked over and snatched the paper, then started coughing. He bent down and covered his mouth with his palm and I held him. When Frank withdrew his hand, there was flooding dripping onto the floor. I panicked and was about to call my aunt when he grabbed my arm quickly stopping me. He stared up at me, panting and looking pale. "Please... Please don't tell them, please... " he pleaded weakly and I nodded reluctantly. "We need to get you to the hospital. You are going to have that surgery okay." I said sternly as I helped him sit on the bed. He broke into laughter but it came out too weak. "Are you going to steal the money or what? Don't tell me you can't read figures." "I've been saving, I'm not that broke. Come on, aunt has gone to bed so let's go." "No. The drugs will do fine." He brushed off. "No. If you protest I'll tell them and get both of us in trouble. We are going to the hospital and that's final." ________ Thanks for reading
