CHAPTER 8
ALYSSA EDWARDS
Daniel left the room to chase after his mother but I remained in the room digesting all that was happening. So because of some conflict with his parents, he decided to find the masala girl for this?
I could not believe that this was what the rich people were up to these days. This was ridiculous but as long as that was going to cancel my debt, there was no need to not want to help, besides as long as nothing happens between us and Frank remains safe, I was fine with whatever.
Daniel came back in a few minutes later and I asked, "Is she alright?"
He was smiling so broadly that I could only chuckle. "She has already informed my dad. Alyssa, please can you play along with this for a while? I really need something from my old man and I have to be on my best behavior. Please?" He pleaded. He looked confused.
"I...uh... Okay, you can but... "
"There'll be a gala tomorrow. A very special gala, more like fundraising and he wants to meet you there. I can't let him down either so please... "
"I should attend that high-class gala with you?" I concluded for him and he nodded a thousand times.
"Yes. Alyssa and I promise that I'll forget about the money and your brother's debt, please."
"But how long will I pretend to be... this?" I didn't know what to say or feel, all this was too much for me.
"Just tonight, Alyssa."
"I have to go. Can your driver take me... I don't know my way out of this neighborhood." I cut him off and he stepped back and nodded reluctantly.
"I'll phone him before you get downstairs." He told him and I nodded with a smile.
"Goodbye, Daniel Paterson." I waved and left the room.
++++
"Your brother is out of danger. Good thing the surgery was paid for in time. We were able to save some vital organs from damage." The doctor informed me.
I breathed out exasperatedly.
"I heard you also paid for his medication for a year." He added and I frowned.
"Really?"
"Yes. I'll put him on medication very soon."
"Um, can I see him now?"
"No. Come back later."
I smiled and walked out of the hospital.
I took out my phone from my pocket and saw that I had 20 missed calls from my aunt and 10 from my uncle.
I quickly called them back.
She picked up on the first ring.
"What the hell, Alyssa. Where are you and is your brother with you?" She squealed on the phone.
"Yes. Aunt. My brother is with me. I'm sorry we didn't inform you. Do you remember my dad's friend, um, Henry, he told us to come and down some few days with him. You know we always go there and this is no news, right?" I rattled.
"So you guys are over there?"
"Yes. We are. You don't have to worry. We'll be back soon. Besides we are very tired and we need some space please." I told her and she went silent for a while.
"You sure you'll be fine over there?"
"Yes. We'll come for our belongings later." I told her and she advised me for a few minutes and hung up.
I can't go home now because of what I have said but it was alright. Frank didn't want anyone to know about what is happening so we had to keep it a secret for a while. At least until he wakes up from the surgery.
Afternoon
I came back and was allowed to see Frank because he was awake. I had bought some fruits and was so glad that he was awake.
He sat up slowly.
"Where exactly did you get the money, Alyssa?" He asked giving me a stern look.
I froze for a few seconds but smiled through.
"I told you, I was saving for college. Don't think about that. The most important thing is that your surgery has been done successfully."
"Yeah."
I sat by him and just stared at him.
"Why did you act as you hated me all these years, Frank?" I couldn't help but ask.
"I... I didn't... I didn't want you to miss me when something happened to me. I didn't want you to feel sad..."
"But what you were doing made me pull back more and got me so sad too. At a point, I thought you even blamed me for our parent's death. Which was clearly my fault." Tears filled my eyes.
"No. That death was my fault and that was also part of the reasons I kept my distance. I hated myself for what happened."
"No. I was the one who blew the alarm that you were hiding something that night. I made them confront you that evening." The tears fell as the memories rushed into my mind. Their argument that night was still so vivid and fresh.
"If I hadn't bolted out of the house angrily, they wouldn't have followed me and probably wouldn't have gotten into an accident. I am at fault here." He assured me, cupping my cheeks.
"I couldn't even attend their funeral because I felt so guilty."
"We need to let go and move on. Once I'm discharged, I'm going to find a job and we'll move out of aunt's place. We won't depend on them anymore." He told me and I nodded with a smile and he hugged me.
For the first time in forever, my brother had hugged me.
I smiled heartily.
Then I remembered that all this was thanks to Daniel. Then to start a new life, I had to pay off my debt to him. I needed to do that by attending the gala tonight.
GALA NIGHT
I went to the house of my class friend, Johanna to borrow a dress and to dress up for the gala.
"So where are you nerdy girl going?" Johanna asked as she searched through her closet for a dress for me.
"Um, a party," I answered unsurely.
"What party is that...There will be a Patterson gala tonight...If that's what you are dressing for..."
"Yes. That one."
"What?" Her jaw dropped to the floor. She stopped and turned to face me in astonishment.
"Which of the Paterson child do you know?"
I frowned. "Johanna? I'm getting a little late so can you skip this?"
"Yeah but you have to know how the hell you were invited to that gala?"
"Well, Daniel invited me... " I sat down so she could do the makeup for me.
I gave her a warning look and she stopped talking and did my makeup.
"Girlfriend, I don't think you'll get any decent dinner dress here because since you are way more shapely than me, the dress is gonna either reveal those curves... " She informed me and I had no choice but to accept it since I didn't have those types of expensive clothes. I could also not afford to go back to our house to get a dress. Aunt will suspect something.
"I'll take it like that."
"Oh. I wonder how the men at the gala will fly to your side once they see you in this red dress." She took out a slim skimpy red dress.
"It's way too skimpy... "
"Just try it on."
She pushed me into the other room, and I tried the dress but it was darn slutty. It was sleeveless and it hugged my body perfectly but it was too short. I came out unsure whether to take the dress to the gala.
"Johanna, this is a gala, not a party... "
"It's more like a party so just go and enjoy yourself. Oh. I wish I was there." She jumped excitedly and I just gave her a weak smile. I was having second doubts, whether to go to the gala or stop but I needed to go to repay him.
I took a cab to the place and I nearly came back home when I saw the glamorous people present on the red carpet. I got down and paid the cab driver, pulling my dress down. I looked around nervously as I got closer to the building.
Maybe I should just turn and leave because how would I enter the gala?
I was about to leave when a voice stopped me.
"Alyssa? Alyssa? Is that you?" Daniel's voice stopped me and I turned, blushing.
"Oh, hey, Daniel... " I waved nervously, pulling my dress again.
"Wow, you look ravishing," he commented, as his eyes raked over my body and I felt utterly naked.
I rubbed my left arm nervously, with a laugh.
"I wanted to repay you... But I think that's a very bad idea. I don't fit here." I said softly.
"No, no, please don't leave. Please, you fit here perfectly. In fact, I couldn't even recognize you." He smiled.
"You sure you're not pulling my leg?"
"No, no, I'm sure all the men in there will be jealous of me. You look like an adult." He was still breathless.
"Are you sure you didn't get a date?"
"No. I didn't. I somehow believed that you wouldn't stand me up."
"Really?"
I locked my gaze with him, getting lost in his brown eyes. He looked so handsome tonight. In his wet dyed blonde hair dark blue suit with his tie loosely around his neck.
"Are you ready for an adventurous night?" He questioned and I nodded.
