CHAPTER 39

1312 Words
AMERIE/JESSICA I stir awake to a strong, warm body beside me. Peering up, I meet my mate’s smiling face. His green eyes roam my face with the usual love for me in them. “You’re finally awake,” he says softly. “Yeah,” I nod, yawning and rubbing my eyes. “Have you been here since I fell asleep?” starting to stretch my body. “Yes. Still feel tired?” “A bit. And hungry,” I yawn again, feeling the fatigue in my limbs as I stretch. He pulls away, giving me the space i need to do so. “It’s almost dinner time. Come on, let’s go downstairs,” he says, helping me up. “Cara and Mom are dying to see you.” My legs wobble as I stand. Nathan catches me, grunting as he lifts me into his arms. He scowls at me, making me giggle. “You think it’s funny that you’re wobbling on your feet?” he says, his scowl softening. “Sorry,” I bury my giggles into his chest. “I just couldn’t help it.” “It’s not funny, Flower. Stop using your powers until we know more about you. Okay?” his voice is a little harsh, but i know he's only concerned about me. He nudges my head with his shoulder so I can look at him. “Please?” “Okay.” “Promise?” “I promise.” “Thank you. Let’s go.” “Wait,” I stop him as my bladder demands attention. “I need to use the bathroom.” He lets me down slowly, ensuring I can stand on my own, and follows me to the door. “I’ll be here. Call me if you need my help,” his green eyes look down at me with worry. “Thank you,” I whisper before entering. My legs shake as I bend to sit, but I manage to control them. Nathan would burst in here if I as much as whimper, and that would be so embarrassing. I manage to stand and wash my hands before leaving. True to his word, Nathan is still at the door, waiting for me. “Are you okay?” he asks, his eyes on my legs. “Yes.” He hauls me into his arms again, and we leave the room. “I can walk on my own.” “Not on my watch,” he smirks, opening the door. Outside, his men stand at attention. “Alpha, Luna,” they greet us as we pass. I nod shyly at them, their eyes full of amusement and respect. Two lead the way while the others follow behind us. “Why are they following us?” I whisper into Nathan’s ear. He chuckles along with his men. My face burns in embarrassment. I forgot how sharp our hearing is. “They are my personal bodyguards. Yours now too. They follow me everywhere I go and will follow you too, wherever you go.” My eyes widen at his words. Peeking over Nathan’s shoulder, I see the two men behind him smiling at me. I drop my head back to his chest. “Done peeking at them?” Nathan chuckles. I bury my face in his chest and don’t look up all the way to the hospital reception. Loud murmurs fill my ears, and I’m glad my eyes are closed. “You should see how they’re all looking at you, Flower. They all love you,” Nathan whispers. “Come on, take a peek.” I open one eye slowly, then the other. Everyone is looking at me with love and affection. Some wave shyly while others smile. The pups are stretching their necks to catch a glimpse of my face. I giggle and smile at this. Their sweet faces brighten when they hear me. Nathan stops, looking from me to them. “Do you want to say hello to the pups?” I give him a vigorous nod, still smiling at the pups. He lets me down gently, remaining behind me as I squat, and the pups run to me, forming a half-circle around me. “Hi!” I beam at them. “Hello,” I say, touching their soft baby skin. I never had the opportunity to do this at Kizziah's pack. This feels so surreal for me. “Hi,” they chorus, giving me their best smiles. The colour of their hairs and eyes, their skin tones, body sizes and heights, all add to my fascination with them. They are so beautiful and I can't stop looking at their faces. Behind them, everyone has stopped what they’re doing, watching me and the pups. “Are you feeling okay?” one of them asks. “Mama said you’d be tired.” “I feel fine.” “Your hair is beautiful,” a little boy says, gliding his tiny palm down my hair. “Soft,” he coos with wide eyes. Laughter breaks around us, and I look up, catching Nathan’s thoughtful, happy, and proud expression. “Can we come visit you tomorrow?” “Mommy will bake us some ginger cookies.” “I’ll bring my pet rabbit for you to pet.” “We can have a tea party, but the boys aren’t invited,” a blonde girl says. “Why can’t we come?” the boy who touched my hair asks, frowning. “Because boys don’t drink tea. They drink beer. My daddy said so,” she retorts, making everyone laugh again. “Well, we can all have a party, and everyone will be invited,” I say, looking at their faces before turning to Nathan. “Right? They can come to the pack house?” He nods, smiling. “You’re the Luna. They can always visit you,” he stretches his hand to me, signaling it’s time to leave. I ruffle a few heads and pat some cheeks before joining Nathan. “Bye, Luna!” they chorus, waving at me. “Bye!” I wave back as Nathan lifts me into his arms again. NATHAN Not all alphas have the luxury of having their pack members like and accept their mate as their Luna. History is filled with women who changed the lives of entire packs from good to worse when they became Lunas. Alphas usually hope to be mated to strong mates who can stand their own in battle, display intellectual strength in running the pack, and carry themselves with grace and poise at events. A Luna is also expected to handle activities within the pack and create a good welfare system for everyone, taking care of the elderly, women, and children. Her love for the children of the pack is a crucial aspect, loving them like her own. As we walk away from the hospital, carrying a quiet Jessica in my arms, I mentally tick off boxes for my mate. Each box represents a pass mark. Strength: check. She may not be physically strong like a wolf, but she is powerful. Not even a wolf could have lifted those beams, rebuilt the destroyed houses, or healed the wounded and sick. Besides, she hasn’t gotten her wolf yet. Love: check. She saved Cara and the wounded, and now, she’s shown the entire pack how much she loves the kids by talking with them and inviting them for a party. I am blessed to have her, grateful that my pack loves her already. She gasps loudly, drawing me away from my thoughts, looking around the pack. Seeing her handiwork for the first time seems to shock her. “I did all this?” “You did.” “It’s... It’s...” “I know, amazing right?” I press a kiss to her forehead. “Wait till you see the pack house.”
