CHAPTER 28

1042 Words
ATTACK Nathan pushes me behind him, Cara’s wolf pressing protectively against my back. “Stay behind me, flower,” he orders, his gaze locked on the growling wolves. “I can help,” I insist, feeling a newfound confidence in my powers. I glance at the dead wolves with a mix of pride and disbelief. “I killed those wolves,” I tell my mate, my voice trembling but resolute. He turns to look at me, then at Cara’s wolf, who gives a brief nod. “How did you do it?” Before I can answer, more howls pierce the air. Nathan releases a painful grunt, and I know he’s feeling the loss of his members. Fear bubbles up inside me, seeing him in pain, and with a louder scream, shards of glass fly from me, floating in the air above us. The shards hover, glittering ominously in the sunlight. The feral wolves hesitate, their yellow eyes flicking between me and the shimmering threat. My heart pounds in my chest, a wild mix of fear and adrenaline coursing through my veins. Nathan steps closer, his eyes wide with a blend of awe and fear. "Jess, what are you doing?" "I don't know," I whisper, my voice trembling. "But I feel like I can control it." With a deep breath, I focus on the shards. My hands tremble, but I lift them, willing the glass to move. The shards respond, swirling around us in a protective barrier. The feral wolves snarl but don't dare move closer. "Stay behind me," I command, my voice stronger now. "I'll protect you," I say to Nathan. He nods, trust shining through his fear. Cara's wolf stands beside me, her growl low and steady. The feral wolves lunge, but I react instinctively. With a flick of my wrist, the shards shoot forward, embedding themselves into the attacking wolves. They collapse, their bodies hitting the ground with a sickening thud. Silence falls, the three of us in shock, staring down at the dead wolves, blood seeping from their bodies where the shards struck. I lower my hands, the remaining shards falling harmlessly to the ground and melting away. The shards inside the wolves do the same. My body shakes with exhaustion, but I force myself to stay upright. Nathan rushes to my side, wrapping his arms around me. "You did it, Jess. You saved us." I nod, leaning into him. "I didn't know I could... I just... I just thought about…" "You were amazing, again," he murmurs, his voice filled with pride as he peers down at me. Cara's wolf nudges me, her eyes full of gratitude. I smile weakly at her, reaching out to stroke her fur. "We need to help the others," I say, my voice steady despite my exhaustion. "There's still more fighting." Nathan nods, his resolve firm. "You can’t do any more of this." “But…” “No buts, flower. We don’t know the extent of your powers right now,” he shushes me sternly, but his eyes are soft with love and fear. “You’re still bleeding and need to be treated,” he says, his hands coming up bloody. “Please, don’t do any more,” he pleads, and I nod, setting aside my desire to help. “Thank you,” he smiles, kissing my forehead before lifting me into his arms. “Rest your head on my chest and close your eyes,” he says softly. As we start to move through the dead wolves, the sound of approaching paws makes me open my eyes. It’s Beta Alex with some pack members. They all stop when they see us. “How’s the Luna?” Alex asks, his concern evident. “I am fine, Beta,” I say softly, my eyelids growing heavy. I feel myself slipping into darkness, chuckling inwardly at my own foolishness. Thank the goddess Nathan didn’t allow me to push myself further. “Hurry, Nate!” Cara’s voice is the last thing I hear before I totally black out. SILVERCREST WOLVES Malachai and the three members of his family felt the surge of power as they sat inside his office with the Beta, Gamma, and Rakiel’s sister. As usual, they kept it to themselves, not even linking each other. “Can you all excuse us,” Rakiel asked, her voice strained, trying to control herself. “But, we haven’t finished discussing…” Rissi starts. “Out, Rissi! Now!” Rakiel snaps at her sister, frustration spilling over. “Come on, dear,” Rissi’s mate pulls her out of her chair, seeing that she wanted to argue. He knew better than to challenge the Luna. Rissi reluctantly leaves, her eyes flashing with annoyance. “Why does she have to challenge my authority?” Rakiel groans once the door closes, anger and hurt mingling in her voice. Her body convulses as the weight of the power ripples through her. “It hurts,” she cries, collapsing, but Malachai catches her before she hits the ground. “I got you, sweetheart,” he whispers, stroking her hair gently. “We need to find her,” Rakiel sighs, her voice trembling. “She used her powers again. Something is happening to her.” “I can go and find her while you stay behind, Father,” Midriel suggests. “No one has to know. We could say I am going to search for my mate.” Rakiel looks up at Malachai, her eyes filled with desperate longing. “What are we going to do, Chai? I want my baby,” she whispers, tears glistening in her eyes. “I miss her.” Malachai draws her into his chest, holding her tightly. “We will find her. As soon as we get to the bottom of this,” he says with steely determination. “The attacks have stopped for now. We don’t know what they will do if any one of us leaves.” The first time he went searching for their lost daughter, the attacks began. Ten members were attacked before he returned. And more followed every time he went searching for her. “We have eyes watching our every move. Whoever took Amerie is also the person attacking our members.”
