TRUST ME

814 Words
CHARLOTTE I looked at Rose in surprise, "You're back?" Rose began to approach me while I asked, "Where have you been? I tried to reach you these past..." I was still speaking when she covered my face with a slap, "How dare you?" I glared at her and turned my attention to Bill who looked away when our eyes met. "Don't you ever lay your..." I had not fully stated my warning when Rose grabbed my hair and began to pull me out of the room. I cried out in pain as I tried to pry off her hand from my hair. However, she did not stop until we reached the living room. She flung me to the ground and said, "Behold the backstabbing b***h, everyone." From the floor where I remained, I looked around and realized that I was surrounded by different faces, none of which held any love or compassion for me. My eyes first settled on Rose's three brothers and I recalled what happened three years ago. I had just gotten married to Bill when all three of them began to question, "Where is our sister? What did you do you her?" At the time, Bill was conversing with a few guests and I took Rose's brothers to the side and showed them the video she had made. However, one of them snatched my phone and threw it on the ground, "Stop your lies because no one will believe you or this fake video. We know our sister very well and she would never elope with a man and disgrace her family." When I tried to explain, one of them shoved me and the other raised his hand to hit me but Bill came in between and stopped all of them. I knew how much they hated me but now they were in my husband's house because their sister had returned. I turned and spotted Bill's mom. My mind traveled back to the day I had married Bill. She had been so furious that she slapped me and yelled, "You good for nothing lowlife, pauper, how dare you marry my son?" Ever since then, she treated me badly, even though I always showed her love and respect. I turned again and spotted Bill's sister, Anna, and brother, Johnny. I recalled how Anna emptied a bottle of liquid milk on my hair right after I had gotten ready to go out with Bill and I recalled how Johnny had slapped me and swore to make me miserable for ever entering his family. I turned, stared at Bill, and remembered our last anniversary, how he had confessed that he loved me while he was intoxicated, and how happy I had been until he called the passionate night we shared a mistake, when he became sober. Looking at their different faces, I couldn't understand what I had done to them all. My only crime was loving Bill and marrying him. If only he knew how much I gave up and how much I changed just to be the perfect wife for him. "How could I ever run away from you?" I heard Rose ask Bill and turned my attention to her. "This so-called best friend of mine whom I trusted and loved like my own sister, got me kidnapped before our wedding. Everything I said in that video was done under duress. There was a gun pointed at me, all at her command. She wrote down the speech I made and all for what? To take away the love of my life. For three years, I had no memory of any of you because of what this lowlife I picked up from the gutters had me injected with. I suffered so much and when I found out you had gotten married to her, I lost my will to live. Why didn't you look for me, Bill? How could you have married my enemy?" Seeing Rose crying while lying through her teeth, left me in utter shock. At first, I thought she and everyone else were upset because I married my friend's ex but now I understood; Rose wanted Bill back and planned to use me in achieving that. I quickly got up, "Stop lying to my husband, Rose. I repeatedly begged you not to elope with Sammy but you insisted on following your heart. Don't you have a conscience? Don't you feel ashamed telling all these lies just because you want to win everyone's trust back? What happened to your eternal love for Sammy whom you were seeing behind Bill's back three years ago? Is it easier to dump it on me because I am a nobody?" Turning to Bill, I said, "I am innocent, Bill. I swear to you that her accusations about me are false. I could never do such a horrible thing. We've been married for three years. Please, trust me."
