CHAPTER 16

1151 Words
Beta Paul Mateo couldn't say anything. As they tried to comfort Charlotte, they heard a knock on the door. A security guard rushed in and said, "Sorry to bother you, Beta, but the Alpha's guards are here!" "Why?" Beta Paul demanded, his wife looking worried, while Charlotte already knew why they were present. The guard didn't know how to respond. Beta Paul walked out to see Lawrence and two other uniformed guards in black standing there. They were the pack's security men, and they were carrying guns. "Greetings, Beta Paul Mateo. We received information from Alpha Teddy to have your daughter arrested," Lawrence disclosed. When he returned to Alpha Teddy's mansion shortly after escorting Jack to the pack's station where criminals and other offenders were held, Teddy had phoned him. Just before Lawrence could enter, Teddy told him to have Charlotte arrested as well, as he was sure she might have gone home to her parents' house. "I want both Jack and Charlotte to be locked up in two different cells, away from other offenders," Lawrence remembered Teddy's orders. So instead of going into the mansion, he got into his patrol car and drove off to Beta Paul's residence, still in their pack estate. "Hmm," Beta Paul sighed, knowing that Lawrence wouldn't give him the answers he needed to the questions he had for Teddy. "Okay, wait, let me go inside and summon Charlotte out." Lawrence gave a nod while Beta Paul, defenseless, went back inside to summon Charlotte. Upon entering the living room and seeing his daughter, who looked heartbroken compared to the lively Charlotte they knew, Beta Paul disclosed, "Charlotte, you're under arrest and have to go with the guards to the pack's police station." "Why?" Charlotte's mother lashed out at her husband. He was her mate, and he was supposed to do something to protect their only daughter. "You cannot sit back and watch Teddy kill our daughter when he's also at fault here. What man would marry a woman and not touch her for four years?! The guards will have to arrest me first before they arrest my daughter!" Lady Harper defended her daughter. She had similarly borne the shame and mockery of the pack's women whenever Charlotte arrived at the pack's meeting in one of Teddy's cars. The other women present there would mock her, gossiping that Charlotte wasn't supposed to sit in the head of the women's chair. They secretly mocked that a barren woman cannot lead them, just as a blind sheep cannot lead a flock of sheep. Lady Harper had tried to defend Charlotte. She knew the stigma that was labeled on women who weren't able to produce an heir for their husbands. And with Charlotte being the Luna of the pack, those gossiping she-wolves believed that Charlotte's crown didn't fit on her pretty brown head and would soon fall off. Not wanting all those years to go in vain, she had personally reported the pack's women's court to Alpha Teddy, wanting to know why Charlotte hadn't conceived for years. Teddy usually dismissed the topic and would only tell her to report the gossiping women and their families to Beta Brown, who would have them punished. But that didn't stop the stubborn women from gossiping about Charlotte. "Harper, you have to listen to me and allow Charlotte to go with them. Those guards arrived here fully armed with guns, and they wouldn't hesitate to use force if Charlotte doesn't go with them peacefully," Beta Paul tried to explain to his wife. He could also feel her pain, their daughter's pain, but he couldn't challenge the Alpha, not when his Beta position had also been shifted to another male wolf. "No way! I am going to protect Charlotte from those monsters! They should return to the Alpha's mansion and have Alpha Teddy arrested first! My daughter is not going anywhere with them!" Enraged, Lady Harper prevented Charlotte from going outside the living room as she stood between Charlotte and her husband. "Mom, it's okay. I will be fine, just let me go with them," Charlotte said, wiping away her tears as she assured her crying mother that she would be alright. "Are you sure you will be fine? Come, let me follow you to the station," Lady Harper proposed, but Charlotte refused. The love of a mother. Charlotte knew that her mother worried so much about her, and she was the reason why her pretty, ageless mother was beginning to have wrinkles on her pretty brown face. Lady Harper was fairer in complexion than Charlotte and Sofia. Rumors had it that Alpha Lucas Hudson in the past had wanted to court Harper, but she rejected his advances before she turned eighteen and discovered that Beta Paul was her true mate. She wasted no time and clung to Paul, mated with him, and the moon goddess blessed their union with their first child, Josh, making Alpha Lucas stick to his Luna, his mate. "Okay," Lady Harper finally allowed Charlotte to walk away. "Come, you cannot go outside in this almost see-through dress. Go inside quickly, Sofia, and bring some good clothes for your sister." Lady Harper quickly dismissed Sofia, who gave a nod and went to bring a new green gown for Charlotte. Charlotte had already taken her bath, so she stripped off her old pink clothes and Jack's shirt that she was still wearing, then she put on the green gown and went outside to meet the guards. Looking defeated, Lawrence hadn't expected to be stressed, even though it wasn't up to 24 hours since Alpha Jack had returned to the Norfield pack. Lawrence was already stressed out and standing in a difficult situation, as handling matters of the noble families was more crucial than handling matters of mere commoners in their pack. "This way, please," Lawrence spoke to Charlotte and led her into the waiting car, which was a black security car. "Let me go with my daughter to the police station," Lady Harper begged her husband, who held her back from getting involved as they watched Charlotte get into the black security car. "Charlotte will be fine," Beta Paul told his wife as she broke into sobs in his arms, watching the black car leave their residence. "Don't tell me Charlotte will be fine! Go with them and find out why she was arrested," Lady Harper pushed her husband's hands off from hugging her waist and stopping her from going after the guards. She couldn't believe that he would hold her back in such an intimate position when their first daughter's life was in danger. "Understood, I will go to the Alpha's mansion now, but you need to calm down," Beta Paul assured his wife before he went into the mansion to wear a noble garment as an ex-formidable warrior of the Norfield pack. He got into his car and drove off.
