“Yes, your Mum and Dad probably will, but my mother will hug me and Shell and feel sorry for us and you. That’s a big difference, isn’t it? And it says a lot about the difference between you and me”.

“Take a taxi home, I suppose, have a little cry and take a sleeping tablet, like I’ve done on hundreds of other nights. What about you?”
“I’ll stay in a hotel tonight and pick up some clothes in the morning before work”.
“You can sleep in the guest room, if you like. The house is still half yours”.
“No, I’ll probably hang around here, get drunk and take a room somewhere close by”.
He called Dam over for the bill and paid by credit card, although neither of them had eaten even half of the second course.
