Soom covered her mother’s hand on her shoulder and a tear escaped her eye as she looked down to inspect the table, and Lek wondered for the umpteenth time why family tragedies so often repeated themselves down the generations. She blamed herself once again for having set Soom a bad example, and wished that she could make everything all right. She looked across the table at her husband, willing him to do something to lighten the mood. “I have never been in this situation before, but it strikes me, that you ought to voice your concerns to the police in Bangkok, Soom, or have you done that already?” “No, the thought that he might be dead only crossed my mind an hour ago, but you’re right, of course.
