2 years later.
"I'm gonna be late mom. Hurry." I spoke through the phone as I fumbled with my heels.
To say I was exited was an understatement. I was finally getting the hang of my life and this new job will offer better opportunities for Ash, my 1 year old baby and I.
Working as a waitress in my mom's small cafe did us no good. It was a small, local place where you come get your morning coffee and omelette with the couple of change in your pocket.
Working as a secretary was going to change our lives.
The doorbell rang and I hurried to open the door for my mom. She was going to babysit Ash until I got back from work.
"What took you so long? The store is only a couple of blocks away."
"Mr. Brown wouldn't shut up about anything and everything. It was just my luck to meet him there." She whined with rolled eyes. "You'll be buying the groceries next time."
I chuckled at her reaction.
Mr. Brown has been trying to get on my mom's good side ever since we moved here three years ago.
After my divorce, we didn't have enough money to help provide for Ash so we had to sell our house and move into a smaller, cheaper one.
But I was in no doubt going to buy our house back for my mom. I know how much that house meant to her and how much it hurt selling it. It broke my heart having to watch her give it all up and act like it was nothing.
"Just give him the chance mom. He's a good guy." I teased.
"Oh for heaven's sake, it would be the end of the world." She replied with wide eyes, making me laugh at her once again. She was avoiding him like he was the plague. "I don't want anyone else in my heart but your father, and there will be no one else."
Her eyes wandered to my father's portrait hung on the wall and my eyes followed.
He was a good man. He and my mother was so in love, everyone was envious of them. Maybe that's why he had to die so young in a car crash.
"Okay mom, I gotta go or I'll be late on my first day."
She nodded. "Yes, you should get going."
I picked up my keys and headed off to my new start.
----
The hotel, to say the least, was massive. It was my second time there and I still couldn't get over how big it was.
Gold Hotel.
It was built a couple of years back but a change in management brought its ratings to the sky and lifted the hotel's name to a decent size.
It's Victorian style interior was an extra plus. People loved experiencing the old, royal layout.
I took in a readying sigh as I looked up at the fifty story building and a chill ran down my spine and all my insecurities got back to me. But all that doesn't matter though as long as I'll be having a decent job that paid enough.
Caleb's alimony was never enough and it eventually stopped all together. I knew how bad things were for him before our divorce. He constantly had trouble with his boss and his salary was always cut short.
Stepping into the hotel's threshold made me sure how unfair the media was being in portraying the beauty of this place. They just failed to show how magical it was and I was mesmerised.
"Wait! Hold the door!" Someone yelled and I was quick to press the elevator doors open again.
A neatly dressed man jumped into the elevator, his breathing frantic and his face sweaty.
In contrast though to his wrecked up appearance, his features screamed good looking with his dirty blonde hair atop his head, playful green eyes and wide smile.
"Ah, sorry, I'm just late to an urgent meeting." A wide sheepish grin played across his face.
I offered an undertaking smile as I took a small step to the side, making space between us for comfort.
"I'm Brian by the way. Brian Pears." He spoke, offering his hand for me to shake.
"Kate Olsen." I replied back with a wide smile of my own, connecting his hands with mine.
"How come I never saw you before?" Brian scrunched up his face. "I mean, a girl like you is hard to skip over."
I raise my eyebrows at him as I chuckled at his line. "Well, you'll be seeing me more often now since I started working here today."
Brian laughed with a hard throw of his head. "You're new here." He spoke between laughter and I noticed his face tint pink. "That was a very bad attempt then wasn't it?"
"Terrible actually."
"Which floor then?" He asked with amused eyes.
"The fiftieth." I replied with pride. No one gets to work at the nineteenth floor that easily. "I'm the general manager's new secretary."
Brian's eyes widened to levels I didn't know possible. "You're kidding. Adrian finally agreed on someone!"
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Well, from what I've been told, he didn't have a hand in it at all."
Brian scoffed at my words. "Sweetie, Adrian always has a hand in everything." He finished with a smirk.
"How come you call him with his first name?" I asked with curiosity.
Brian fixed his suit jacket and extending his hand once more for me to shake.
"Nice to meet you Kate, I'm Brian, head of the marketing department of the Gold Hotel chain and Adrian's one and only dear friend." He introduced with pride and I almost choked at my own spit.
Brian chuckled at my expression since I probably looked like a fish out of the water.
I closed my mouth and fixed myself.
"So, I'm asking because I'm very curious to know, but how was Mr. Frost able to build all that in just one year. The internet said nothing about him coming from a rich family."
"Yous sure did your homework huh."
My cheeks tinted. "Well, I had to know exacty who I'll be working for."
"And that's what makes you the chosen one." Brian said with a smirk to which I only narrowed my eyes at.
He let out a chuckle at my reaction but I want very amused and waited patiently for the answer to my question.
"To be honest," Brian spoke after a couple of seconds, "nobody knows exactly how he did it but rumours has it that his father is actually Montgomery Frost, that big business typhoon.
My eyes widened at the name. Everyone knew who Montgomery Frost was and any competition in front of him was useless. He was always my business role model.
The elevator dinged and came to a stop as we reached the nineteenth floor.
"After you princess." Brian ushered me out with a flat palm.
"Don't call me princess." I narrowed my eyes at him.
Caleb used to call me princess, and now I can't to swallow the name down.
I didn't get to see what Brian's expression to my reply was as I hurried out towards my desk. I was already late enough and I'm sure he was too.
"I'll see you around princess." I heard him yell from behind me making me take a quick turn towards him, my eyes wide and cheeks flaming red. A sneer threatgned to escape but I kept my composure.
He winked at me before disappearing into what must be the conference room.
I turned back and took quicker steps towards my desk.
" Oh you're finally here." A short, elderly woman stepped out of her seat and greeted me with a wide smile.
"I'm so sorry I'm late. I promise it'll never happen again." I was quick to respond. I can't afford any mistakes here.
"Oh don't worry about it. As long as Mr. Frost still didn't ask about you then you're good to go.
I sighed in relief and placed a calming hand over my chest.
"Oh, silly me." My attention was brought back to the woman in front of me as she extended her hand. "I'm Laura Vincent. I'll be your adviser for the upcoming month till Mr. Frost says you're good to go. Then I'll be heading back to HR."
I connected my hand with hers and nodded my head at her introduction.
"I'll help you around with your work and training but only to a certain limit. Mind you dear, we have to make sure that you're up to the job. Gold industries might not be very old but it sure is big."
"Yes of course. I understand."
"Great. This here will be your desk. You should start getting yourself familiar with it and your stationary, then maybe you can fix Mr. Frost's schedule for today. I wrote most of his important meetings on those tiny sticky bites but you should keep them safely documented in your notebook."
I noticed that I was bobbing my head to her orders started becoming an automated thing. Whatever comes out of her mouth, I nod at. I was determined to excel at this job no matter how hard it got.
"Every morning you should be ready with Mr. Frost's daily latte and schedule. You hand him his coffee and speak out what important meeting he has for the day. Always be ready with an extra suit, tie, shirt and shoes in case something happens. You should always have napkins in your bag, a second bottle of his perfume and even extra socks if you could. Always be ready for everything."
My face itched to show my appalled expression but I was able to maintain a poker face.
Mr. Frost seems like a high maintenance man. It's like looking after Ash but a bigger version.
"Mr. Frost's meeting will be over in about an hour or so. This will give you enough time to fix his schedule and go get him his coffee. There's a Starbucks two blocks away. Single shot and a lot of sugar. 4 packets to be precise."
I nodded my head, making sure I remember everything she told me.
"I'll leave you to it then my dear." Laura offered a smile and was soon out of sight.
My sigh count raised as I took yet another one.
I didn't have time to waste dwelling on how beautiful my desk looked to me and how comfy the chair was. A big contrast with the cafe's back aching chairs and greasy counters.
Meeting with Mr. Hoffman at 11 a.m.
General management meeting at 1 p.m.
Lunch meeting with Mrs. Miller at 2 p.m.
The meetings never ended and I knew work wasn't going to be the easiest.
My attention was pulled to the phone ringing on my desk.
"Mr. Frost's office." I spoke as I picked up the black telephone.
"This is Laura dear. I'm just calling to remind you that Mr. Frost's meeting will be over in thirty minutes so you need to have his coffee ready so when he's out."
I mentally smacked myself on the forehead. I almost forgot about his coffee.
"Yes okay. Thank you Laura."
I hung up and quickly picked up my bag to leave.
Thankfully, it didn't take me time to reach Starbucks but the line was longer than I'd liked.
It felt like a never ending stay and my worry intensified by the second.
I was going to be late on my first coffee fetch and that is not a good start off with my new boss.
The watch in my wrist ticked and my nerves were frenzied.
"Yes ma'am."
Finally.
"A grande Latte, single shot."
"Would you like anything to go it?"
I smiled politely at the girl behind the counter trying my best to keep my nerves at bay. "No. But please hurry, I'm running a little late."
A scoff echoed from behind me and I turned my head slightly to see an old lady with arms crossed against her chest, roll her eyes and remark. "Aren't we all."
A big part of me wanted to turn around and give her a piece of my mind but logic got the better of me. I was already late and didn't need any time wasters at the moment.
Thankfully, the coffee didn't take as much time to get prepared and I was running with a hot cup of latte down the street, making sure I added in the extra sugar Mr. Frost liked.
Laura was waiting for me on my desk.
"Quick, he's inside." She whispered as she took my bag from me and practically pushed me towards the door.
I breathed out and fixed my composure before knocking softly on the door.
"Come in." A rough male voice answered from the other side.
"Good morning Mr. Frost. I'm K-"
But my eyes stared wide at the deep brown orbs in front of me.
I think I stopped breathing for a second and was about to drop the coffee in my hand.
And like always, we were complete opposites.
He had a calm, expressionless face while I was a total mess.
