I always knew that I'd get to see him again. Life always played like that. But I never thought it would be this soon. Not when I still haven't achieved anything.
"Morning miss Olsen." The voice I tried so hard to remember rang in my ears again. His eyes were cold and his voice cut through my body brutally.
"C-Caleb?" I whispered out.
"It's Mr. Frost. Adrian Frost." He put emphasis on his new name, his face changed from a cold to a hateful one. And I was suddenly jolted out of my shock stage.
"Adrian? Since when exactly was that your name?" I retorted back, mirroring his hateful gaze.
"And since when do you Mr. Adrian Frost drink coffee. Sweet coffee?"
"That is none of your business." Caleb retorted. "And don't you dare forget yourself miss Olsen. Here, I'm your boss and your nothing but my secretary so act accordingly."
I narrowed my eyes at him as I tried to control my anger. "Wow Caleb, I didn't know that leaving me would mess you up this bad."
I knew I was playing with fire but at this point I didn't care. I was going to resign anyways and as much as I missed that i***t, the way he's looking at me like I'm his arch enemy and remembering the way he left me, made me want to tear him to pieces.
Caleb slammed his hand angrily on his mahogany desk and raised to his feet.
I kept my face expressionless as he stomped his was towards me.
"If you think you meant anything to me to change once we separate then you're wrong." He sneered in my face and being so close to him reminded of things I tried so hard to forget.
"Leaving you was the best thing that has happened to me. Look around for yourself. Im the general manger of a very successful hotel chain. But you, you're nothing but my secretary."
His words were true but it felt worst when he said it even though he wasn't the first to tell me that I was nothing.
"No Caleb, that's where you're wrong. I quit."
"Oh so you're running away then?" He
mocked.
"Call it whatever you like, I'm leaving." I replied as I slammed the coffee cup on his desk and turned around to leave.
"Sure, why not. Run away like you always do."
I stopped in my tracks and tried to take in a deep breath. Turns out it was of no use.
"You know very well that I never run away from anything." I spoke in a low tone before turning around to face him again. "You know best of all that I never run away!" I repeated louder, angrier.
"Then what do you call what you're doing now?" Caleb asked with a suggestive look.
"You knew about this didn't you? You knew that I applied for this job and you chose me to work here."
I wasn't really asking to get an answer and Caleb didn't provide anything either.
"Why huh? Why did you choose me to work here? Why did you say yes?" Now I demanded answers.
Caleb remained silent for longer than I liked and when he opened his mouth to speak he didn't satisfy my questions.
"Go back to your desk miss Olsen. You still got a lot of work to do."
I glared at him and clenched my teeth hard. But I had nothing else to say. Didn't want to speak all together as I felt myself drained of both physical energy and of emotions.
Quietly, I turned around and headed towards the door.
"Oh and something else. No one is to know that we know each other in any way. Understood?"
I made sure I shut the door properly behind me and all of a sudden I couldn't hold myself together anymore.
I raised my hand up towards my face trying to keep in the sobs as I stood against the door.
My tears flooded my face and hand and I was finding it hard to remain on my feet.
"Oh dear." Laura's soft voice spoke as She approached me.
"I know how hard he could get sometimes sweetie. It's okay. You look like you're a strong woman I'm sure you'll be able to handle it." She tries to soothe me with her words and back pats but she didn't understand.
"I'll go wash my face." I spoke between my muffled sobs.
"Yes dear. Go freshen up and calm yourself. I'm sure everything will be okay."
-----
The cold water did good to my burning cheeks and eyes.
How dare he? How dare he treat me like that when he was the one to let go. When he was the one who chose another girl over me and just threw me like an old shirt.
My angry eyes stared back at me as I stood in front of the bathroom mirror.
I now had two options; either I suck it up and continue working here or I resign on my first day and go search for another job, which was hard considering my weak resume.
I guess I only landed this job because Caleb said okay. Because he wants to rub it in my face and show me just how successful he got while I didn't.
I let out an affirmative breath and made up my mind.
I couldn't care about anything now but Ash and my mother. It was my responsibility to provide for them both and help out.
I fixed my hair and makeup, tied up my clothes and left the bathroom with determination.
"Oh there she is." I was greeted with Brian's wide grin as I reached my office and I mirrored his with one of my own.
Laura was nowhere to be found. Maybe she went back to her work.
"I just came to check in on you to see how you're holding up so far on your first day."
"It's still 10 o'clock." I chuckled as I took my place on my chair.
"So? You've been here for almost two hours. Enough time for something to happen." He winked at me.
"Nah, maybe if you came after lunch I'd have some gossip to share with you." I laughed and he joined in.
"Well, speaking of lunch, how about you join me today princess?" Brian asked with a soft smile.
I narrowed my eyes at the word and for some reason felt myself look back towards Caleb's door.
I turned to look at Brain and offered him a wide grin. "Only if you promised to stop calling me that."
"Done. I'll come take you at twelve sharp and-"
Brian's words where cut short as Caleb's door creaked opened.
"Oh hey boss." Brian jumped in but Caleb offered him no attention.
"Miss Olsen to my office. Now." Was all Caleb said before retrieving back to his liar.
That-
I tried to calm myself.
"Twelve sharp okay?" Brain whispered my way before leaving.
I nodded my head at him and readied myself to meet the beast.
I knocked gently on the door and cold 'come in' echoed from the opposite side for the second time today.
"You wanted to talk to me Mr. Frost."
"Here, take those files and entry them in an excel sheet then after you're finished print them and send them yourself to Mr. Brown in HR. Make sure you give them to him personally."
I nodded my head silently as I took the files from him.
"Excuse me." I turned to leave, not wanting to be near him any longer but he stopped my mid way.
"What were you talking about with Brian?"
"Like you said Mr. Frost, I'm nothing but your secretary and all that is between us is only work. So my personal life is not something you should be bothered about."
I didn't wait for a reply from him, neither did I wanna hear one as I almost ran my way out of that office. I felt suffocated.
It took me an hour or so to finish entering all the data into an excel sheet. I made sure I had no mistake whatsoever so Caleb wouldn't find an excuse to make me feel even worse about myself.
I searched for the HR floor in the small map that I had of the hotel.
The hotel's organisation was pretty simple with guest rooms till the forty seventh floor then the top most three floors are offices.
The hotel we're in is the main branch with 5 others scattered around the country. It wasn't the biggest of chains but it wasn't small either.
HR was on the forty ninth floor with both Marketing and Sales.
"Uhm..excuse me, I'm looking for Mr. Brown." I asked the first person I met.
She was a petite looking female with dark brown hair tied up in a messy ponytail and a couple rogue strands escaped To fall freely over her face along with her straightly cut bangs.
She wore one of those Harry Potter glasses and freckles peppered her rosy cheeks.
"Thank you." I offered her a grateful smile.
"You're new here right?" She asked, making me stop to look at her.
She held the folders in her arms tightly against her chest as she looked up at me through her glasses.
I was a couple inches taller than her but the difference wasn't of a huge extent.
"Yes, I'm Mr. Frost's new secretary."
"Oh boy. You're in for a lot." She spoke with pitiful eyes.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh don't scare the new girl Olive." A boy about my height jumped in and drapped an arm over the girl's, now called Olive's shoulders.
"I'm not. I'm trying to help her out." Olive replied annoyingly as she removed the boy's arm away.
"I'm Kate, Kate Olsen." I interrupted with a smile as I extended my hand for a shake.
The boy was the first to connect his hand with mine and grin widely. "I'm Reese Collins."
"Nice to meet you Collins."
"You can just call me Reese. And this little bubble here is Olivia Adams." Reese continued, introducing the petite girl next to him.
I shook hands Olivia and smiled widely at her.
"Maybe if you're free during lunch we could show you around." Olivia suggested.
"I'd love to but I promised Brian to go have lunch with him." I replied, a little sad to decline her offer. I'd love to get a hang of this place so it gets a little easier to adjust.
"Brian? You mean Brian Pears?" Reese asked with wide eyes.
I nodded my head, knowing exactly where his reaction came from.
Brian doesn't really come off as an innocent, one woman guy. More like an elite player.
"Looks like he found his next target." A new female voice joined in and I turned around to come face to face with a gorgeous blonde.
She looked me up and down with assessing eyes before extending her hand in for a shake. "Dylan."
"Kate Olsen." I shook her hand back. "Don't worry, I have eyes too you know. I know a player when I see one."
"Then why did you say yes to his lunch offer?" Dylan retorted.
"I'm making a friend perhaps." I shrugged my shoulders to try and make my lie convince-able.
More like I'm trying to show Caleb that he doesn't matter to me anymore and that I have moved on. I wanted to tell him that our divorce wasn't the end of the world and I still got it in me to be with other guys. Even if he was just a player and our relationship won't step up to anything more than friends.
All three sets of eyes looked at me like I'm crazy but made no comment.
"Well, if you succeeded in being nothing but friends with Brian then you sure deserve a medal." Reese joked and we all chuckled.
"Id love to stay and continue chatting with you all but Mr. Frost will kill me if I'm late."
"Yes, he hates wasting time in any way." Olive commented with a visible shiver running down her face.
I almost scoffed out loud at that but kept myself in check. They should've seen him a couple of years back. He was the king of procrastination. He was even late to our wedding that stupid i***t.
"Looks like I gotta hurt then." I said with a fake nervous laugh. "I'm looking for Mr. Brown."
"Oh he's in his office, the third to the left." Reese said and I smiled gratefully at him.
"I'll see you soon guys. Maybe you can show me around tomorrow."
I waved at them all goodbye before heading to Mr. Brown's office and handing him the files in his hand personally.
I hurried back to my desk, knowing that I had already wasted some time making new friends I guess.
Just as I reached my desk, Caleb's door opened and a familiar blonde emerge from inside.
Jaylein.
