The soft scent of bergamot and a whiskey mixed with sandalwood and morning dew awoke me.
“She’s waking up go get our doctor,” one of the voices from last night ordered.
I opened my eyes and found two people who looked like two sides of the same coin. One with hair like the night sky, a raven black with strips of silver and eyes of lavender, he had massive broad shoulders that led to a lean fit frame. On the other hand the other man had long white hair like virgin snow and had strips of ice blue but those same lavender eyes, he had a more mature elegant aura around him he was tall but leaner than the other man.
“Would you like some water?” the man with the white hair asked. I nodded and he poured a glass and held the glass carefully to my lips. I eyed them both cautiously, kindness was foreign to me and I wasn’t sure just what they wanted.
“Do you know who we are?” The one with black hair asked softly.
“No,” I looked down, almost ashamed of my lack of upbringing. I could tell they were powerful and they had an air of royalty around them, all context clues pointed to them being the twin princes, but I couldn’t believe that because why would they be in this room with me.
“My name in Orpheus,” the one with white hair smiled, and my heart ached to be closer to them. “I am Azrael,” the one with black hair smirked softly.
“The princes?” I looked up at them.
“The very same,” Orpheus nodded.
“Am I in trouble?” I began to pick at my fingers worried. The princes rarely showed their faces, their names were synonymous with death. They had fought plenty of wars, killed countless creatures, and stabilized our country. People wanted to be mated with them for power but anyone man or woman who threw themselves at them found a swift banishment to a different region.
“No, not at all,” Azrael reached out to brush my hair away from my face, but I flinched away from his touch. I felt terrible after seeing the hurt on his face.
“Okay, let’s start here. What is your name?” Orpheus asked.
“Hesperia,” Alpha Black came into the room, he looked tired.
“Are you the doctor?” Azrael asked, he knew well enough Alpha Black wasn’t the doctor, but wanted that man to feel small.
“I assure you the pact doctor is on his way,” Alpha Black continued. “Right now we need to clear up any misunderstandings. For one this girl is not your mate, I can promise you that.”
Orpheus c****d his head, “I am pretty sure I asked for our doctor not this pacts doctor.” Azrael stood up from his chair letting go of my hand, I could feel his anger about to erupt. I grabbed the end of his jacket, he turned and saw my face. He sat promptly back down in the chair next to my bed and carefully held my hand again. “I do not want to hear whatever excuse you think might make us believe she is not our mate.”
Mate? I looked at the men confused. Right I remember saying something about that when I was shot. But they were who I was speaking to?
“I know she is not your mate, because she is my son's mate. Isn’t that right Joshua?” Alpha Black looked behind him and Joshua walked into the room.
I tensed up and the two men immediately stood up and hid me from his view.
“It’s true, she is my mate. We’ve already consummated our relationship,” I could hear the smugness in his voice. I felt my heart shatter and the room begin to spin. No it wasn’t like that. I didn’t want it. I wanted to say something, anything, but nothing would come out. The machine began to beep and my heart rate began to spike and my breathing became uneven.
“Leave,” Orpheus demanded.
“No, I get to know what is wrong with my mate,” he pushed past his father and grabbed my ankle. It burned from his touch and I yanked it out of his touch.
“Take your vermin out of this room or I will kill him myself,” Orpheus growled loudly.
“Hes, look at me,” Azrael whispered softly.
I couldn’t bring myself to look up. Please stop. I begged my mind to stop racing. My nails dug into my skin trying to get rid of any part Joshua touched so I could be clean again. “Dirty…I’m so dirty,” I sobbed.
“Clear this room now!” A thundering voice rose from the arguing.
“Your majesty,” Alpha Black bowed.
“Do not make me repeat myself,” his voice was thick and regal.
“Father!” Orpheus began to protest.
“Even you two.”
The room went silent except for the machine beeping and my sobs. I felt the man sit on the edge of the bed but did not make any move to speak or touch me. Finally after ten minutes I had calmed down enough to look up.
He was a massive man with long silver hair and a thick beard that matched in color. His skin that looked sunkissed, tawny in color. He had scales that ran down his arms that were golden. He was scrolling on his phone, seemingly waiting for me to start the conversation.
“Hello your majesty…” I whispered.
“Are you ready to talk, starlight?” He asked, his tone was kind. A tone I had never known, it was paternal. I nodded and sat up properly.
“Are you Joshua’s mate?” He asked gently.
“I believe so,” I answered truthfully.
“Did you and him have consensual s*x?” He continued, I noticed his wording.
“No, we did not,” I stated matter of factly.
“Did he finish in you?”
“No, I’m not sure what happened. It’s like he got scared and left before he finished. I had a concussion and passed out right after so I cannot tell you exactly what made him scared,” I replied, chewing on my lip.
“Did you pray to someone that is not the moon goddess?” This question seemed to have him more curious than the others.
“I did. I prayed to anyone who would listen…” I admitted.
He let out a laugh and smiled over to me. “Are you hungry Hes?”
“Hes?” I looked at him curiously.
“Yeah, is that okay to call you that?” He asked me.
“You are the ruler of our continent, you can call me whatever you see fit,” I chuckled.
“I did not become a ruler to be a tyrant,” he looked at me earnestly. “I want you to feel comfortable around me. So I ask again is Hes okay?”
I felt weird being taken into consideration. “Yes.”
“So food? The missus is coming with her famous lasagna and some salads,” He smiled happily at me.
“I would like that sir.”
“Sir, no no none of that. Call me Kaladin,” he patted my head softly. “We’re going to get you out of here. Hes don’t you worry.”
