***Samuel POV***
"I don't understand. If Callie is this hybrid, as you say, then how does she not know?" I press.
This was all so confusing, but there's also this sense of pride now when I look down at her. Callie's supposed to be the most powerful being out there, and she also happens to be my mate.
"You see, Alpha, her abilities will unlock when she turns 18, which is also when her wolf will appear, but by the looks of it, she seems to be young. She probably hasn't matured yet," Carly says in a relaxed tone.
"Actually... she's 20. She most likely looks this way due to malnutrition and lack of sunlight these past few years," I say.
Once Carly heard Callie's true age, her eyes opened wide.
"You're very lucky you found her now. If she would have turned 21 with her wolf still locked away, she would have never been able to gain her abilities. Then sadly, by 25, all the magic locked inside her would ultimately consume her body and kill her." Carly speaks with urgency.
I look at Callie with worry and wonder why the Old Alpha and Luna would do this. I need to know if they know who she really is and what she's capable of. Did they keep her wolf locked away on purpose?
"Alpha, there's more... She seems to have black magic residue on her. This is the likely cause of her magical abilities being locked away. I've seen this type of magic before. The only way to break this curse is by fully mating with their true mate," Carly pauses, looking me over, then continues, "From what I can see and feel, that seems to be you."
Carly reaches her hand out for me to take. I give it to her, and she takes hold of it and puts my hand on Callie's. Immediately, Callie's eyes open, but they were foggy, similar to the first time we touched in the dungeon. Carly moves my hand away, causing me to let out a low growl. I didn't want to be away from Callie.
"You see how her eyes were foggy?" Carly asks.
I nod.
"It's because her magic is locked away. They become foggy because her abilities are forced to come out this way instead of how they are supposed to. After her wolf is unlocked, you'll be able to touch her without them doing that. Once you've fully mated, she'll be able to unlock her magic and use it properly. Be warned, she'll need to learn how to control them before they overwhelm her," Carly advises.
"How am I supposed to teach her? I have no knowledge of witchcraft. I can train her to be a strong and mighty Alpha but not a witch," I express.
I look at Callie, then Carly, and then James, whose mouth has been wide open since we learned about who my mate really is.
"When she turned 18, she was supposed to begin her training. An Elder from our coven would have sensed her powers unlocking when she came of age. They then would have appeared before her to start her lessons. But if what you say is true and she is 20, I'll notify the coven council so that her training can begin when she's healed. Here is my card. When her wolf awakens, and you have fully mated, rip this card, and I'll send her trainer right away," Carly explains.
She hands me the card, then crosses her arms and vanishes in thin air, leaving behind a small wind of dust.
"Umm, Alpha, did you get all that? Because I'm completely lost," James utters, finally closing his mouth.
"Yeah, but first things first, her wolf needs to awaken. Get me the doctor. We need to see how long it will be before the wolfsbane is out of her system," I order.
James nods and leaves to go and get the doctor. I sit back in the chair by Callie's bedside, wanting to hold her close but afraid I'd hurt her. Bruises were covering her arms, and her jaw is starting to swell. I needed to know who did this to her, and when I find out who, I'll make them pay.
The door opens, getting my attention. Dr. Murphy enters along with James.
"Alpha, the test confirms the water she was drinking is tainted with wolfsbane. If she has been drinking this for a while. I'd say her wolf wouldn't appear for at least 3 days. We are able to speed up the process by flushing it out of her system-"
"Let's do that," I cut in.
"The only problem with that is we would need to put her into a coma because her wolf will appear rapidly instead of gradually. This will put more strain on her mind and body and can cause her to take longer to heal," Dr. Murphy cautions.
"Get this stuff out of her system as soon as possible. Callie's already two years behind. I don't think she can wait any longer," I demand.
When I finish speaking, Dr. Murphy calls some nurses into the room. The scene turns into a total s**t show, almost like a tornado has gone off in the room. One of the nurses grabs me by the arm and starts walking me towards the door.
I rip my arm out of her loose grip and growl. I didn't want to leave Callie's side, but when Dr. Murphy said they were going to need the whole room, I cave and exit. I hated standing outside, not being able to do anything, so I decide to leave this place and come back after the process is finished.
"I need you to send someone to get some things for her. Tell them to put everything in my room. Callie's going to need clothes, toiletries, and shoes to start with. I also need someone to clean and stock the kitchen in my room with food and drinks. Once she's done here, I want her sent to my room," I direct James.
James nods and gets to work, leaving me standing by myself outside. I think of a way to keep busy while I wait for Callie. I figure I should speak with my father to see if he has any knowledge about this prophecy. If he does, hopefully, we can come up with a plan to keep my mate protected.
She'll definitely need training on our end. Plus, she still needs to learn how to shift, and because she didn't turn when she was 18, it's going to make it even harder to do now.
I leave the hospital grounds, and I can feel my wolf, Zack, pouting, not wanting to leave his mate's side. I shift and run to my parent's cabin, which is about 10 miles away from the packhouse, in a small clearing that is surrounded by trees with a pond nearby.
As I pass through some thick brush, I notice my mother and father sitting outside, trying to catch some fish.
"Sammy!" Mom calls out as she spots me.
Both my parents rise from their chairs to greet me.
"What's wrong, son?" Mom asks with a worried voice.
"I found my mate-"
Before I can finish my sentence, my parents start hugging and congratulating me until I push them away.
"What's wrong with you? Shouldn't you be happy? Do you not like her?" Dad asks.
"No, it's not that. If anything, as soon as I saw her, I fell in love instantly. The problem is when I touch her. She screamed out in pain and fainted. She's at the hospital right now," I say while hanging my head low.
Mom covers her mouth with her hand in horror, while my father looks at me with concern.
"Son, what are you doing here? You need to be with her immediately," Mom says, grabbing me by my hand while leading us toward the hospital.
"I was just there..."
I tell them the whole story, from how she was found to the dark magic radiating off her. I let them know how she had been unknowingly drinking wolfsbane for a while, which was keeping her wolf suppressed. With each tidbit, I can see the fear and disgust in my parent's eyes.
"They are currently flushing the wolfsbane out of her system. I sent James to get her some clothes and other things, as well as prepare my room for when she gets discharged," I let them know.
"Who did this to her?" Dad questions.
"Why did they do this to her?" Mom chimes in.
"That's why I'm here. We called a witch who explained the curse she was under. But when she did, she also discovered that Callie was some sort of hybrid."
As soon as I said that word, my father's eyes grow big.
"Son, are you saying your mate is half-wolf, half-witch?" Dad says in disbelief.
"Yes. From what the witch said, one of her parents was a pure Alpha, and the other was a pure witch," I explain.
Mom looks on, confused as I continue to speak, but my father seems to be in awe. When I finish, Dad walks closer to me to put his hand on my shoulder.
"Your mate isn't just any other mix, and with you being the Alpha, that would make her The Enchanted Luna. It was written in prophecy hundreds of years ago. If it's true when she officially becomes part of our pack, our power will increase altogether, and we will become unbeatable," he declares.
Mom keeps looking back and forth between us, trying to figure out what to say, but is at a loss for words.
"Sam, you need to understand that you only have a year before she loses her abilities, but that doesn't mean you can rush the mating process because if you do, it can backfire. If you mark her before she's ready, she won't be able to unlock her full potential," Dad says, almost like he is warning me.
I head back to the pack house and go to my office to get as much work done as possible. I want to be able to spend the next few weeks with her to bond, train, and hopefully mate.
