Chapter 9: Misunderstanding (2)

“This chair is really comfortable, I can’t sit on beds…” Owen said as he smiled at the girl. ‘I’m sitting here just in case someone walks in and wants to frame me as something I’m not…’ He thought to himself. “What did you want to speak about?” He asked…
“So… about today… I wanted to tell you how sorry I am for saying what I did today… I never meant to doubt your feelings or anything… I just assumed you were hired by my parents is all…” Fiona explained, her voice sounding a bit more heartfelt than before.
“It’s really no problem! I totally understand there’s something going on in your family that I’m not a part of… so I can’t blame you for looking out for your brother.” Olive said with a smile on his face. ‘In truth I have to thank you, because of the little scene I caused today Philip and I might have grown closer, I’ll certainly buy this kid new painting supplies or something…’ He thought to himself.
“Even more than that… when I saw you getting so emotional today… I…” Fiona seemed like she had some trouble speaking her mind at that moment. “…my heart skipped a beat…” She finally muttered.
“Eh…?” Once again Owen’s brain shut down at an another unexpected development. ‘What in the world is wrong with this kid? No wait… she’s fifteen, she’s in puberty so I guess it’s normal? No there’s no way this is normal…’
“Owen?” The girl called out to the man once again as she sat on the very edge of the bed and closed the distance between them, now it was only about a meter or less.
“No, no, no… listen, listen… I’m twenty seven… and I don’t know how I look to you but I really have no interest in people younger than me.” Owen said with a stern voice. Usually he’d try to reject the girl kindly but this wasn’t the type of situation he could afford to do that. ‘I have to get her out of here as soon as possible…’ he thought to himself.
“…..!” Fiona looked somewhat startled by the other’s words then suddenly… she started crying. Her entire face soon began being flushed in a bright red as she cried, and it wasn’t a regular cry either, it was an ugly cry, the kind you get when you’re genuinely hurt, snot was everywhere, her face in an awful grimace and even though she wasn’t wailing soundly she was still sobbing quite audibly.
Owen’s eyes widened as he stood up from the chair and patted the girl’s shoulder. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to say it so rudely… it came out wrong-” He panicked not really knowing what to do or say to her at this point. ‘This is exactly why I don’t like kids… why the Hell is she crying just because I rejected her?’ He wondered to himself as he tried to calm her down but the tears from her eyes kept falling even though she wasn’t weeping.
“I-it’s alright…” Fiona said as she brushed away at her eyes again and again until they turned red. “I… I just wanted to try… it’s really fine…”
‘NOTHING IS FINE ABOUT THIS!’ Owen thought to himself but resolved to keep calm. “How about we talk about this in the morning? Everything’s going to be alright…” He said as he urged the girl to stand up and leave his room.
“Yeah… alright…” Fiona did just that and they both headed to the door upon opening it and walking out, Fiona’s tear filled eyes were met with her brother’s…
“What in the world…?!” Philip looked angry as he saw his crying sister leaving Owen’s room. He instantly walked up to the man and grabbed him by the collar. “What do you think you’re doing?! We allowed you into our home and you dare touch my sister?!” He yelled, this might have been the very first time the man yelled since his teenage days.
“That’s-” Owen tried to protect himself but then he considered the way things looked. ‘Yeah… not like I didn’t predict this exact thing would happen… but after she started crying I didn’t have the time to figure out what to say or do… I really got f****d this time… not in the good way either…’ He thought to himself as the other cut him off.
“Leave now before I call the police!” Philip let go of the man’s collar and went to his sister’s side to protect her. He seemed genuinely enraged, in fact more than he’s ever been in his life. The very sight, the very possibility of something having happened to his sister made him mad.
“Bro… that’s really not what happened-” Fiona tried to explain but her brother interrupted her again.
“It’s alright… we can talk about this in the morning.” Philip said as he lead his sister to her room the gestured to one of the servants to escort Owen outside.
‘Well God… you suck…’ Owen thought to himself, he wasn’t a believer to begin with but this seemed like the perfect opportunity to blame his bad luck on something beyond him. ‘That girl is simultaneously the reason I got closer to Philip and the reason he f*****g hates me right now… you know what… I take back what I said about the art supplies, I ain’t rewarding s**t…’ He thought to himself as he went back to take his phone and jacket then left while following the maid’s lead. As they were walking outside the maid told him. “Good night.”
“Wish it was…” Owen replied, he felt like this really was a point in his career where he failed miserably, to the point it was pathetic. He played all his cards right just to get kicked out like this over a misunderstanding. Having been left with no other choice he headed back home, which was quite a while since he was in the middle of the luxury residency and not in his low class two bedroom apartment. He grabbed a taxi and went back…
