I drove through the night trying to get to Katy. The closer I get to her, the more I can feel her emotions through the bond. I know she has been stressed and hurting, she is getting weaker by the minute. I am and hour’s drive from the closest town to the forest where the Blood Moon pack resides. It is six in the morning and I am exhausted from the long drive. By the time I make it to the town I know something is wrong.
I can feel Katy’s fear through the mate bond as if it is my own. I know she won’t be able to tell that I am near as she hasn’t completed the mate bond and it frustrates me that I can’t communicate with her through the pack link like I can with the other members of my pack. I need her to know I am here and that I would find her a lot faster if I knew where she was. I stop at the motel in town and try to see if I can pick up her scent. It doesn’t take long for me to find it and I follow it to the room they were in. Everything is packed and their suitcases are on one of the beds. I am more than a little relieved to see that the room has two beds instead of one.
I walk out to the receptionist and ask her where the nearest trail into the forest is, assuming that Katy went for a run before driving god knows where. The woman informs me that the trail is about a five minute drive. I get in my car and make it to the trail in three minutes. I start running up the trail and focus on the smells and sounds around me, hoping I will hear her. I follow her smell and fear starts pushing me faster when the strong smell of blood and wolves from the Blood moon pack reaches me. I push myself harder, trying to get to her faster. The sound of a painful howl makes me stop for a second before running again. I can feel Katy getting weaker and I know she is badly injured. When I finally reach her, she is on her knees. I see the relief and acceptance in her eyes just before she falls to the ground.
I run to her and fall on my knees next to her. I try to see how bad her wounds are but there is so much blood and it doesn’t seem to stop flowing out of her. I can smell the silver poison in her blood and it feels like my whole world is being ripped apart when I realize that she won’t be able to heal in time. I strip my shirt off and start wrapping it around the wounds on her sides, trying to at least stop most of the blood.
My head snaps up when I hear feet landing on the ground next to us. I let out a growl and pull Katy close to me, he might be human but the fact that he is holding a knife in his hand makes him a threat to Katy. He seems to realize he has a weapon in his hand and drops it to the ground before falling on his knees next to it and staring at the woman in my lap with tears running down his face.
“Mom please don’t leave me. I’m so sorry.” He lets out a sob before looking up at me. I am honestly too stunned by the fact that he called her mom that I didn’t know what to say to him. He looked to be at least eighteen and unless she was twelve when she gave birth to him, I didn’t see how it is possible for him to be her son. She would’ve told me if she had a son, wouldn’t she? I know she has a lot of secrets but hiding a son? Maybe she adopted him but that doesn’t make much sense either because he looks exactly like her, there is no mistaking that they are related. Maybe it is her younger brother and he just started calling her mother as a way to cope with his parents’ death? “Is she going to survive?” He asks me and I can see the hope in his eyes. I look down at Katy and I let the grieve take over. No one has ever survived an attack like this and that is without the silver poison.
Silver doesn’t burn our skin when we touch it, but it is poison to our blood. When it is in our blood stream, it prevents us from healing. It is forbidden to poison another wolf with silver. Even killing a rogue with silver is against our law. It is a coward’s way to fight and wolves pride themselves in fighting fair, but it seems not all wolves have pride.
“Would you mind laying my mother down? I have a medical kit with me and I would like to clean her wounds.” The boy whose name I assume is Drake, asks. I lie her down slowly and try to listen to her heart beat. It is faint and weak, slowly fading and I wish mine would fade with her. The only closure I have, is knowing my pack will end my pain soon enough.
“You’re going to be okay mom. You hear me? This fight is not over. You will not let me go.” He tells Katy with a stern voice as if she can hear him. He takes out a bottle of Ethanol to disinfect her wound and whips of as much blood as he can. He then takes out a needle and thread and starts to sew the wound on her shoulder.
All I can do is sit back and watch him work. It is clear to see that he knows what he is doing. This young human is trying to save her while I just sit here and stare at him. I shake my head and take the Ethanol that is next to him and start cleaning up the wounds at her side. I press hard on the open wounds to stop as much of the blood as possible. When he is done with the wound on her shoulder, he moves to her sides. Her heart beat is still there, very faint but it gives me hope. I take the knife that he had dropped on the ground earlier and slid my wrist before opening her lips and allowing my blood to run into her mouth. The boy looks like he is ready to protest. “My blood should be able to help her heal faster. I am not sure if it will be much help with the silver running through her veins, but it is worth a try.” I explain.
“Then why the hell didn’t you do it from the start?” He asks and he has a valid point. I feel stupid for not thinking of it earlier, but the moment I saw her injuries, I couldn’t think of anything aside from the fact that I am losing my other half before I even had the chance to truly be with her.
I didn’t say anything because there was no excuse. I just kept opening the wound trying to get as much blood into her as possible. As an Alpha, my blood is strong, but as her mate, it will be even more so. I pray to the goddess that she will survive.
I hear footsteps approaching and get up ready to protect Katy and the boy. I might be confused about their relationship, but I know he is the person she refuses to live without and if she survives to see him dead, she will hate me and find a way to end her own existence.
The Alpha of the Blood moon pack steps through the trees. He has his beta flanking him on his left and one of his warriors on his right. He takes in the scene before him and for the first time I take a look around to see the dead bodies on the ground. Instead of just one dead wolf as I had expected, there are four dead wolves on the ground. One of them was lying on his back with his eyes wide open in shock and his throat torn out, his hand was wrapped around his junk and the sight made my blood boil. The one closest to him lay on his stomach with his neck twisted in an odd angle making it clear that his neck was broken. The one that was the furthest away had teeth marks on his throat and was in his wolf form. The sight of the one closest to her made me winch and I promised myself to never come on her bad side. His junk was ripped off and thrown to the one side, the piece of his throat that she ripped out was lying on the other. I felt pride at knowing I had a strong mate, I am also now sure that she will survive against all odds.
“You will pay for killing my pack members!” The Alpha growls at me. I start laughing at him, I couldn’t help myself. I have enough evidence now that this Alpha was running a dirty pack. Fighting with silver was against our laws and I am sure that if I looked under his nails, I would find silver powder. “What are you finding so hilarious Alpha. Is the idea of death amusing to you?”
“You think I did this?” I look at his dead men. “I only got here after all the fun.” I tell him. The pride I have for what my mate has done clear in my voice. “I can tell you this though, I am going to enjoy killing you and every single one of your twisted pack members. I have been waiting a long time for this.” I wouldn’t need the approval of the council. They will see the silver for themselves when they get here.
“We are almost there Alpha. The smell of death is overwhelming. Are you hurt?” Chris mind linked me.
“I am not hurt, but Katy is badly wounded. They have poisoned her with silver.” I link him back. “The Alpha of the Blood moon pack is going to try and challenge me. I need you to protect Katy and the human with her.”
The Alpha starts laughing as if he thinks I am telling him a joke. “You mean to tell me, that pathetic excuse of a b***h killed four of my men?”
I give a deep growl. How dare he call my mate pathetic? The only thing pathetic here is him. “I would choose my words carefully if I were you. Your wolves injured my mate and poisoned her with silver and she still killed them. You can just imagine what I am capable of.”
He looks behind me and I know my pack members have arrived. It is time to get rid of this scum and get my mate home.
“I, Alpha of the Silver moon pack, challenge you, Alpha of the Blood moon pack. You run a dirty pack and it is time to rid the world of your existence.” He might be fighting dirty, but he is arrogant and lazy. I just have to make sure he doesn’t get his claws in me.
“I accept.” He says with a smile as if he is excited about the idea of killing me. I will be the one enjoying the feeling of ripping him apart.
He starts to remove his clothes but I am not bothered by the effort. I jump and turn mid jump, tearing my clothes. I grab his neck in my teeth and snap it before he can even remove his pants. I rip his head off and start pulling his body apart. My wolf won’t stop until there is nothing left of this piece of s**t. The taste of his blood tastes like poison in my mouth. Stupid i***t really thought I was going to make a game out of this? After what his men did to my mate? After what they were clearly planning on doing to my mate?
I hear clothes tear and look up from the dead wolf at my feet to see that his wolves run off. “Follow them and kill the rest of the men in the pack. Get all the women and children together. I will follow as soon as I know my mate is safe.” I mind link my warriors. They run after the two wolves and howl at the joy of the hunt. My men aren’t monsters and they would never kill an innocent. These men were everything but innocent, my wolves will enjoy tearing them apart.
I turn back into my human form and walk back to Katy. Caled hands me an extra set of clothes and I quickly get dressed. “How is she doing? Has she started to heal?” I ask him. I need to know that she will be alright before I go help my men.
“The healing process has started. This young man has done a good job by closing up her wounds. Her heart is already beating stronger thanks to the blood you gave her.” I let out the breath I didn’t realize I was holding. I still have time with her. We could still have a happy life together.
I need to call the council to let them know what happened here, before they send someone here and I look guilty. I asked Caleb to borrow me his phone as mine is in my car. I dial the number for the council while I make my way to my men.
“What have you done Alpha Sallow? You went against our wishes and I pray to the goddess that you have good reason. I would hate to see you punished.” The council is made out of a few of the strongest Alphas, I have been asked to join the council on more than one occasion, but I have no patients for politics.
“Members of the pack attacked a female.” I know that isn’t reason enough to challenge the Alpha but he spoke before I could say more.
“Was she on their pack lands? Is she a part of your pack or a rogue and if she is a part of your pack, what is she doing on their territory?” I pinch my nose in frustration knowing that it won’t count in my favor to tell the council member to shut the f**k up.
“She is a newly changed wolf and also my mate. She was angry at me for changing her and ran away. She broke our pack bond, making it hard for me to find her. When I did find her she was badly injured. She killed the wolves that attacked her but they had silver poison under their nails that poisoned her blood making it nearly impossible for her to heal. If I didn’t find her when I did and gave her my blood, she wouldn’t be alive now.” I tell in the calmest tone I could.
The council member was quiet for a moment before he spoke again. “Am I right in assuming you are on your way to the rest of the pack to kill the rest of them?” he asked and I knew he understood that I did the right thing.
“I won’t let harm come to the women and children. I will not lay a hand on those that are innocent. If the rumors are true, then these women and children have been through enough. I will let them choose their new Alpha.” I tell him honestly.
“Do what you have to do. Raymond is already on his way and should be there shortly. He will confirm if your story is true.” He informs me before ending the call.
When I arrive at the pack house I am disgusted at the sight of the run down place before me. Seeing the women full of bruises in different stages of healing, the children with dirty and torn cloths breaks my heart. The need to protect them and kill that useless piece of s**t over and over again for what he has done to these people is consuming. Chris walks towards me with a young man in chain and I lift my eyebrows in question.
“He was helping us in the fight instead of fighting against us. We chained him because we aren’t sure of his intentions.” He informs me.
I look at the women and one woman catches my eyes. Where the rest of the women are looking down, she is looking at the man in chains. There is no fear in her eyes, only love for the man. She looks to be about eighteen, newly turned. Born wolves stop aging at the age in their mid-twenties to thirties and shift for the first time on their eighteenth birthday.
“Let him go. He won’t be going anywhere.” Chris gives me a curious look but lets the man go. The moment his chains are off, the woman stands up and runs into his arms.
“Thank you. He isn’t like the rest of them. He has saved our lives on more than one occasion.” The woman tells me before she leans into him and closes her eyes as if she is finally home.
I turn to the rest of the women and children. “You are free now. You can choose to join a different pack or choose your new Alpha.” I know they will be choosing the young man because they all turn their heads to him and bowing it down in respect. My work here is done and it is time I get back to my mate. We have a lot to talk about.
I walk to the young man that introduces himself as James. I shake his hand and congratulate him on his new position in the pack. He looks scared and I can understand why. He will have to pick this pack back up from the ground and he has no training. I give him my number and tell him I will be more than willing to help when he needs it.
I turn to walk away, ready to hold my mate in my arms and never let her go again. Craig walks up to me and I can see he has something he needs to tell me but doesn’t want the rest of the pack to hear. I know it has to do with the information I asked him to get on Katy. We let the others walk ahead as I wait for him to tell me what he knows. What he tells me about Katy makes my blood boil and I lose control of my wolf.
