We are running, always running. We have been on the run for years now. For years I have been looking over my shoulder, with every turn I make and with every breath I take, I fear that he will find us. We never stay at one place long, always on the move, always ready to pack up and move at a moment’s notice. We haven’t found a place we felt safe enough to call home in five years. He would always find us, but not this time. This time I made sure we got away, far out of his reach.

I use to find peace in my dreams. Living every waking moment in fear, my dreams have been my only escape. Ironic how, when we finally find a place to call home, my dreams are what I am running away from. The moment I close my eyes, it is there to chase me. I use to avoid my reality, now I avoid going to sleep.

Katy
My eyes feel heavy due to lack of sleep. I have already had two energy boosters, because coffee is just not my thing, but I still can’t get my eyes to focus. My computer screen is going double and I have to constantly blink for my eyes to focus for a few seconds just to go back to double vision. I really need to get my s**t together! I need this job if I plan on feeding my son and myself next month. Who knew packing up your life and moving to a different country can cost you ten years’ worth of saving? I really had no choice in the matter; we had to get away, far enough that he wouldn’t find us. I had to give my son more than a life of fear and constant running. “Katy, are you alright?” my boss, Jackson asks. I look up to see him leaning against the door frame of my office. Being tall with clear tanned skin and the most beautiful blue green eyes I have ever seen, he truly is every girls wet dream. The women in the office always stops what they are busy with when he walks in, finding it hard to focus with such a treat in their line of sight. His suits are tailor made to fit him perfectly, leaving no mistake that the body underneath is all hard muscles. His got black blue hair that looks so soft that I have to constantly stop myself from running my fingers through it when ever he is standing close to me. “Katy? Can you hear me? Do I need to call a doctor?” Wait, what? Oh yeah, I am staring again, only this time while he is looking at me. I really need to get some sleep. “No! Sorry Sir. I didn’t get much sleep last night. My neighbors where having a fight and only stopped making a noise around three in the morning.” I lie. I have gotten so use to lying, that the lie runs off my tongue so naturally. Truth is, I avoid sleep because I am tired of running. Ironic I know, I am tired due to lack of sleep, but avoid sleep because I’m tired of running. I have been running for five years, only staying at a place for a few months before moving on to the next. I had to get away for HIM, but he always finds us. I refuse to say or even think his name in fear that he would magically appear. Now that I have ran far enough, I run in my dreams, but I am not running from the same person… I am running from something I never see but always know it is there. “Take the rest of the day off. I have no meetings today and only a few emails I need to go through before I take off for the day. There isn’t much for you to do, might as well start your weekend a bit earlier.” Jackson says with a smile. My boss really is sent from the gods! “If you’re sure, Sir. I really could use an early night.” Normally I would at least try to decline the offer, but I really am tired and of no use today. “Yes, of course.” He says, giving me that smile that shows off his dimple on his left cheek, that makes my panties melt every time no matter how often I see it. I really need to get laid if all it takes is a smile to get into my pants. “Katy?” the way he says my name makes my heart skip a beat. He walks closer to my desk and puts the cup of coffee he has been holding down, the action draws my attention to his hands. Those hands have been present in every single one of my fantasies for the past three months. “Please call me Jackson like I have asked you to do from day one.” He says, effectively drawing my eyes up to meet his and those eyes… I could stare at them all day and never get tired of them. It is like standing on a cliff looking at the clear ocean beyond. The green around the iris reminds me of open, green fields in the middle of spring. It is so unique and draws you in like a moth to a flame and you really won’t mind getting burned. He is so close that I can smell him. He smells like sandalwood and the forest. I can’t help but lean in a bit closer before realizing that I am once again making a fool of myself. I clear my throat and try to clear my head before giving him a polite smile and saying “I will do so Sir, next time.” I give him the same answer I have given since the first time he asked me to call him by his name. My panties already melt when he smiles, calling him by his name will just make me feel attached. I feel that if keep addressing him as Sir, it will remind me that he is my boss, and it keeps everything outside of my head professional. He smiles again before standing up straight. Shaking his head, he walks out of my office. I stare at my office door for a few more minutes before picking up my bag under my table and walking out, closing my office door behind me. We live in a small town near Mt. Hood, Oregon. It takes about ninety minutes to drive from the office to our small two bedroom apartment on a normal day, with the traffic of everyone leaving work after a long day. Today it took me just and an hour to get home. There isn’t much going on in this small town and I prefer it that way. The best part of this small town is that it is so close to the forest. My son and I have always been drawn to nature. We go hiking every chance we get and as I don’t work on weekends, we go every Saturday, trying different trails. As soon as I walk into the place we have come to call home, the small of spices and herbs hit my nose. I head straight for the kitchen with a smile that drop the second my eyes take in the scene before me. In the center of the kitchen stands my son, Cole, covered in flower with eggs on the flour at his feet. “What on Earth are you doing?” My son might be an amazing cook, but a baker, he is not. “Mom? What are you doing home so early? I was only expecting you after seven. I was going to surprise you but I guess the cat is out of the bag now.” It takes me a moment to figure out why he would try to surprise me. When we moved here, I had everything changed so that He wouldn’t be able to find us. I had our birth certificates changed, our names, surnames and birthdays. We are known now to everyone else as brother and sister instead of mother and son, thanks to the fact that I gave birth to him when I was sixteen and I have always looked about five years younger that I really am, it was really easy to pull off. Today is the 6th of August, it is also my real birthday. “I thought it would be a good idea if we still celebrated our real birthdays together as mother and son. Just because everything else has changed, doesn’t mean we have.” Cole says with a sad smile. “You're right, there is no need to pretend when we are in our own place. We can do with a little celebration. It’s not every day you turn thirty five.” I say with a little laugh. “Go get yourself cleaned up while I clean up this mess.” I say while pushing him out of the kitchen. When you’re constantly on the run, you forget to enjoy the little things in life. Cole always reminds me to remember to live and not just survive, and surviving is all I have been doing for so long. It is time to really start living again. After Cole got himself cleaned up and I got the kitchen cleaned, we made the table ready for dinner. I went to set the plates while Cole got out the wine and glasses. He made my favorite curry dish and my mouth was watering, begging for a taste. I took my time enjoying every bit, savoring the taste of the spicy food. “I have something for you.” Cole said as I took my last bite. He bent down and picked up a small wrapped box he hid underneath the table. I took the box and gave him a grateful smile. “You really didn’t have to but I really do appreciate it.” We haven’t done the whole gift giving thing in a few years. We use to be big on gifts when he was younger, but that has taken a back seat in the last few years. “Yes I did. Now open it!” He says with excitement in his eyes. I unwrap the box as neatly as I can, trying not to tear the wrapping. Inside the box is a small gold ring with a black opal in the middle and small rubies surrounding it. “To remind you that we will always be us, no matter what our birth certificates might say now, we will always just be us.” I slide the ring onto my right ring finger and it fits perfectly. The opal is his birthstone and the ruby is mine, so much meaning in such a small thing. I really couldn’t have asked for a better son and I am making the promise to myself right here that I will make more time for moments like these. That night I went to bed feeling happier than I have in a very long time but the moment I closed my eyes, I started running again. Strangely tonight, I didn’t run in fear, I was running in the forest knowing it is right behind me, but I wasn’t scared. I wanted it to catch me, even excited about being caught by the big bad wolf.
